Problem: Cannot get the HDMI to play audio through to my monitor or tv (2 different for testing purposes)
I am able to clone my laptop's display with no issues (other than the audio). I have tried selecting HDMI output in the Playback Devices, but the only 2 items there are the Speakers "Sound Blaster Recon3Di" and Digital Output "Sound Blaster Recon3Di". I have selected this are to show disabled devices, but still, those are the only two displayed.
I think I have exhausted just about every trick in the book to try to get the audio come through the tv/monitor speakers.
Anyone have any solution or suggestions? I can't post on the Alienware forums because of maintenance (just my luck)
Side note, I have never had an issue with the HDMI in - audio and video works perfectly from any device I have tried (PS3, XBox360, even another PC). I'm also trying to record gameplay with both an Elgato and a HDPVR2, but b/c of this audio issue, there is no sound. I have been able to watch a movie/play game and used external speakers before, but that's not what I want. I need the direct audio out from the HDMI.

I have tried almost everything I can think of:
    Updated BIOS
    Tried 3 different HDMI cords
    Updated nVidia drivers to latest
Banging my head on my desk many times

I have the same issue, no audio out through HDMI out port of my R4, with stock windows intel drivers. I think the intel drivers are in charge of that port, as its not directly connected to the dGPU. I can get HDMI audio out by using a mini displayport to HDMI adapter.

So the miniport carries audio? (shows my lack of Apple knowledge hah) I will have to try that. Thanks for the tip.

Its beyond frustrating to learn that Dell/Intel are blocking audio out like that. Bad business practice, and if I had known before I bought the M17x, I would have shopped elsewhere...

As I stated, I have tried many ways to get the HDMI sound out option to show up in the Playback devices. Its just not there. I have only Speakers "Sound Blaster Recon3Di" and Digital Output "Sound Blaster Recon3Di". No HDMI out option is showing. I have selected "Show Disabled Devices" and its still not there...

Settings for HDMI-out audio depends on the drivers provided with your graphics card. When I use HDMI with enduro, in the voice control panel it says "intelhd audio" and when I use and when I only use the dgpu it says AMD audio driver. If you are using optimus/enduro try switching out to only your dgpu and see if that helps.

Here is a screen shot of what I am seeing. I have tried plugging the HDMI out into my desktop monitor and a Samsung tv. The video works fine, but there is no audio carried to either destination. There just is no option showing up other than those two.

I have gone into the nVidia control panel and under the "Set up Digital Audio" section, it says "Displayport: No audio capable display available". I am 100% sure that there was a check box with a tick in it that confirmed it was installing HDMI audio drivers with the last update from nVidia I made...

Try updating to latest Intel graphics driver? And try it just in Fn+f7 mode if you haven't done so already.

What does Fn+f7 do? It asked me to reboot. I did. No graphics driver were loaded, then suddenly it states it was installing my nVidia drivers. When it was done, it asked to reboot. When I did, nVidia drivers were again loaded, but the Intel taskbar icon is no longer there... (Intel drivers were up to date)

And whatever it did, it now shows the nVidia HDMI Output in my Sound Playback tab. O_O Thank you for helping me get it show up!

(I just read what the Fn+f7 does; it disabled the Intel card, I'm assuming, and just made the nVidia the only card running?)

Yes the HDMI is routed to the Nvidia card instead of the intel (switches on the PCB actually do this electrically) so something is up with the intel driver.

Glad to hear it worked out for you. I think you should re-install the intel drivers when you enable the iGPU again if/when you do. Most likely the intel audio driver didn't load properly.
