I plugged in an HDMI to my TV for the first time a couple days ago, and the video and sound worked perfectly. Then when I go to do it right now, the video comes up just fine, but the sound won't work on the TV, just on the PC speakers. I went into the sound properties and there are 3 different HDMI selections and all 3 say "not plugged in", when the cable is clearly plugged in. I tried updating the drivers from dell (which are all horribly out of date; AMD and so on), and restarting, but still no dice. what is wrong with it?

I'd try a different HDMI lead if you can and make sure they are firmly plugged in at both ends. Sometimes, the HDMI ports are quite tetchy when it comes to being recognised. One potential "fix" is to trim some of the plastic off the plug that goes into the laptop as the HDMI ports can be unusually "deep" and yo uneed to "insert" more of the metal HDMI plug into the socket. Trimming the plug so that you can do this has been known to cure a lot of HDMI connection problems. Try step one first, then if that doesn't work, grab a cheap HDMI cable and start trimming the plastic away with a craft knife or something similar.

Try a different cable and if that does not work then try doing a system restore.

Have you tried going into Nvidia's control panel under digital audio out and made sure it was set to your tv? I know i had this problem once a while back.

sorry, I haven't checked back in a while. I'll try some of these fixes when I get a chance, and post the results. Thanks for all the help!
