is it just me, or is the DVD drive REALLY LOUD?
i got the basic drive, and it really sounds like that disc is spinnin in there pretty hard. if i move the laptop slightly it sounds like its vibrating pretty hard core, and sometimes it sounds like it grinds a bit. not like zOMG horrible, but enough to concern me. wish i had a camera/mic to record it. normally it just sounds like an annoying buzz.

is there any decent cheap upgrades? i mean, if not i'll just simply not use it unless i REALLY have to. i think the only time i've every used a dvd drive in my life are for hardcore situations, like re-installing windows, re-installing starcraft 2 (because its the one game that i actually had to buy in hardcopy format, for nostalgia sake), or copying DVD movies for my wife.

i'm not into the whole bluray scene either, even tho i do have a PS3 (and my wife owns the only bluray-DVD in the house, Twilight bleh lol)

I think regardless of what laptop you have the optical drive is going to be loud, i think it is rare to find a laptop that has a quiet optical Drive.

my HP G71's dvd drive wasnt too bad. it at least didnt sound like the DVD was rattling around and scrapping edges. if the M17X s even tilted or if the weight is supported a bit more on that side, it makes the DVD sound like its unbalanced and vibratiting like a mother.

then again, the G71 didnt have the drive that "eats" dvd's, it was the kind that pops out, and you pop the DVD/CD onto the center post. which is probably why...

edit: my old toshiba was the same way. quieter design, but i'm guessing everyone is moving to the streamlined DVD eater style because you have less moving parts to break?
