Yesterday I got an M17X R2 board and after some stuggle i got the board to post with two 5870m cards and all three fans spinning . but i get the non dell psu error each time i boot and im using a flextronics 240w psu that works flawlessly with an M17x R1 . Furthermore i tried to use a 330w PSU and i got the same error . I still havent installed an OS . Is there any way to fix this? Will i be able to play games and use crossfire with this error? Thanks in advance :)

PD i will get soon an m18x r2 with a 240w psu and ill try to use it with this board to see what happens (dont know if is flextronics or the other one though)

Edit 1: Just tried a another a 130w dell power adapter and still getting the same error

No, not without running ThrottleStop or the like. Message indicates bios will downthrottle cpu ... 'cripple' is a more accurate description.

    Permanent, hardware fix here:

I had a similar issue with my studio 1749 (though in that case it was a "cannot determine power rating of ac adaptor" message). A new, genuine (via ebay, not expensive) charger didn't fix the issue.

Turns out my power jack on the laptop was shagged (loose, and two of the cable connections broke off as I removed it from the laptop base).

Fortunately (and I really, really like this on Dells) the jack isn't on the system board, instead it's on a little cable assembly that plugs into the system board.

Grabbed the service manual from the Dell site, grabbed a new cable assembly from ebay and replaced it. Dead easy, although involved as it's the very first thing fitted during assembly of the laptop.

    Could be worth checking out.

Thanks for that info i guess i will have to check this further.

Yeah some laptops have non-soldered power jack connectors but not the case of the m17x r2 which is soldered , that could be a fix (actually i have another m17x r2 and r1 boards and i could remove the power jacks from those to attempt install it on this one but i dont know if the r1 jack will work) .

Before trying something "crazy", try power reset the laptop and drain the adapters.

With throttlestop, it can un cripple the CPU, but you will stuck with a low power state gpu.

You should get the correct dell power adapter for the laptop and be worry free.

i have the correct 240w power adapter and is not working , i think the problem will be the mother board power jack
