Just wondering if all of this is normal? My house at the moment is around 74f with AC on, so it's pretty decently cool in here. It's also on a flat surface. It seems a bit hotter than normal on my lap.. and that's with all the fans not being covered and properly ventilated. laptop is criss-cross on my leg and all fans are getting proper ventilation.. These readings are with nothing open whatsoever. hwmonitor.png

Gpu looks a little warmish but the cpu is normal, but that gpu seems to be in need of a repaste. pretty hot for idle

Repaste? I have no idea how to use glue or paste.. Nor how to open up my alienware lol. Do they do that kind of thing if I'm still under warranty?

Dell will only get involved if the temps are causing a problem (which they aren't yet). Take a look at: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...-mobility-7970-m17x-r3-illustrated-guide.html for guidance on repasting - step 3. But it could be as simple as dust bunnies in the heatsink. It does get clogged quite quickly, I have to clean mine out around every three months (damn cat fur!)

It looks pretty good to me. I don't think you should repaste or do anything with that. But it would be good to have those temps on gameplay. They GPU does seem high for idle and it might get to overheat during long gaming sessions.

My new r4 has similar temperatures. 7970m idle is a little high too.
With ambient temperature of 23-24 °C it idles between 57-60. When watching HD content it goes up to even 63. But surprisingly when gaming, the temperature goes only a bit higher - 69-72° C which I guess is good.

I'm not going for a repaste yet - I've had the laptop for only a month.
I think 60° C isn't going to harm the card assuming I've seen people reporting much higher load temps with other laptop brands.

These temps are perfectly normal, my 7970m idles on 53 but before i repasted it was around 56 or something, with a notebook cooler like a cooler master u3 you can get the temps to low 40 high 30, that's only for the gpu.
Stressing my GPU goes to 63 - 69, really much depends on the benchmark or game.

On Crysis 3, it got to about 67-69c for 10 minutes of in game, in a relatively cool room. Not super cold, but not hot either.

Dell is coming out to repaste my GPU, replace all the fans in the computer, speakers (left one is rattling), and keyboard (keys are crooked and loose).

My 7970m idles at around 55C but never really goes past the 70C mark when I'm gaming which is cool considering I live in 33C degree weather.

I have a very early R3 with a 6970m (just after the Sandy-bridge recall). It idles at 62-63C and heats up to 74-75C gaming. It has always been that way. No problems. It idles high but does not get much hotter when the fans spin up. You guys are worried about nothing.

Coming from the desktop world, laptop temps made me extremely nervous, but after 2+ years of no problems I quit worrying.

i have the same idle temp problem with my 7970m and its mostly because gpu fan simply dont rev untill 60ish temps unlike cpu fan which starts at 50 °.
I am quite sure its not a paste issue because currently my gpu never goes above 70 ° under full load. (975core 1350memory 1.060V)
only downside i can think of is that makes it annoying to use it on lap, and i suggest using custom fan profiles to avoid this issue.

I understand that. Having that much heat 90c IS VERY HOT and can damage parts over time. While you've had it for 3 years, it could make it last 3 and a half - 4 years compared to 6-7 (if it lasts that long). And something can randomly mess up on you at anytime, temps are important.

It's always good to keep an eye on temps when it comes to gaming laptops, if you get above 85 under load it might be a good idea to consider a re-paste.

FPS fluctuations, video lag after playing for a while and slow response times are common overheating symptoms. If you're not experiencing any of these your laptop is most likely doing good.

May want to look into a cooler. The a fore mentioned U3 is what I am using and my 7970 is currently sitting at 46 as I type this. When gaming it usually only goes up 10-15 degrees and the laptop fans hardly ever kick in. Your CPU temps are identical to mine though. I repasted mine and saw absolutely no difference in temps a few months ago.

I think your temps are fine. At least my laptop pretty much runs on the same temps.

My R4 with a 7970m idles in the high 50s, even with a repaste. But I think it's mostly caused by AW's fan control, because my fan doesn't even rev up untill my temps hit 54~55 and when I game it never got past 64,ever. I wonder if that's normal, the ultra late fan start that is. Another thing that is bothering me is my CPU temps, the fan is constantly spinning @ 2400 rpm (HWinfo), but the temps fluctuates wildly like during the time when I am typing this the fan speed was constant but the package temps varied from 49~62. And my CPU clocks down after 30~min of prime, probably because of temp because it was reaching the 90s.
