    Hey guys,
Newto the forums so be gentle.

I just got my m17x last week (work computer :) )
    the specs are

    Q820,
    8gb 133y3
    CF 5870
    2 x SSD Raid 0
    RGB Screen

The machine is going to be used mostly for compositing running Nuke 6.xx
The problem i'm having is the GUI can be a slugish.. espically when zooming the viewer around.

Can anyone shed some light on this?
I have tired disabling crossfire etc but this doesn't seem to fix the problem.

The software runs fine on my work desktop running a slower card (geForce 275 i think)

If anyone runs this software and has experienced the same problems your thoughts would be great..

apart from that the machine is great and a huge speed boost from my old MBP

    Cheers

I had to do some research on what NUKE was, but I get the gist. The only thing you don't completely have maxed out is your CPU. I thought RAM was a big player in these types of programs, but you've got that maxed. Are you running your laptop at the same screen resolution as the work desktop? Does your work desktop have a faster CPU than your Q820? Do you have a lot of resources being used by other background programs on your laptop? What graphics driver are you using on the laptop?

    Thanks for the reply,
RAM and disk speed play a big part in Nuke and i have those parts covered.
The CPU in my workstation is an i7 (slightly faster) although i was running Nuke dual booted on a MacBook pro for sometime with no issues (core2duo)

When it comes to rendering the machine is fine, for the most part the GUI is silky smooth its only the viewer that isn't as smooth as i would have expected. (playback from disk is fine, its just zooming in and out in full screen mode)

My laptop is running at the same resolution as my old laptop, and my workstation (1920x1200)

The machine is running the standard Windows 7 install from Alienware as well as the stock Dell Video drivers.. could it be an openGL driver issue?

The 10.7 driver gave me quite a performance boost from the driver you're currently using. However, there's is one annoyance I've noticed. If I let the LCD turn off from inactivity, it won't come back on, nor respond to CTRL-ALT-DELETE. I have to do a hard shutdown. I've got my power plan set to never let the LCD go to sleep. I just have it set to go dim after 20 minutes. And you've got to do a few things to driver prior to installing it for it to install correctly. I don't know how bad to the 'sleep' thing will bother you.

Thanks for that, i have no problems setting the machine to never sleep as i generally have it set like that way. Is there a thread that gives good step by step to getting this driver running? If i run it and it doesn't work i will go back to the stock drivers as game performance isn't my biggest concern... although i need to get a game on it to show it off :p

    Download it here: 10.7 Mobility

Start the installation. It will extract itself, and then go to another screen. Instead of going any further, just hit CANCEL and exit the installation completely. If Windows gives you the installation warning, just cancel out of that too.

The contents extracted to C:\ATI\Support\10-7_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc. From there, go into the CONFIG folder and find a .CFG file called INSTALL MANAGER. Open it with notepad or whatever you use. Go down to the bottom and change the FALSE after WORKAROUNDINSTALL to TRUE and save the file then exit. Go back to C:\ATI\Support\10-7_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc and run the setup. You should get a couple of prompts, and that's about it. *Hopefully* it goes off without a hitch like it did for me. I'm not saying this will solve all of your problems, because making a claim like that around a computer forum will likely get a person shot. :D

You're welcome. I benchmark and game HEAVILY, so in my opinion, the pros outweigh the cons.
