Ok I've run the setup for 3d vision, I've seen the cool slide show. Now how do I get it to work in Mass Effect launched thru steam? I've set all the internal settings in the game form the suggested forum, and I have made sure to click the Enable 3d vision before launching the game. Glasses on and charged. What am I missing?

Update: Mini Guide posted here on second page :

Enable 3D stereoscopic settings in Nvidia control panel...Does the green lettering come up on the bottom right in game?

    Try a different game?

    Hey Driazen,

Go to the nvidia control panel, go to stereoscopic 3d, go to set 'keyboard shortcuts', assign a key to 'show or hide stereoscopic 3d effects'. I use ctrl + alt + t for mine. Then when you run the game, hit the keystroke.

The suggested keyboard shortcut 'Show or hide stereoscopic 3d effects' is grayed out in Nvidia control panel. All other keyboard shortcuts can be set but this one.

Is your screen set to the 120hz operation within windows? Mandrake stated he had to switch it from 60hz to 120hz operation within Windows when he got it.

There is also something in the nvidia control panel. I had to switch from the SD and hd section to the pc section to enable 120hz. Never saw that before but last few cards were amd. Go thru each section of the control panel to find it.

Ok figured it out. I was in 120 but i had to enable advanced in game shortcuts to get the first one above to enable. Once I did that then I got it working in game. Thanks to all that helped. And may I say I love the 3D but man they sure made it less than easy to get fully enabled.

Should have an 'easy button'. While it is fresh in your head, perhaps post a quick two or three line step by step for those who have yet to endeavor.

Well I wouldn't say it specifically needs an easy button but the Nvidia control panel GUI designer defiantly needed 1 more reviewer on his code review. And thats a good idea to come up with a little 3 step guide on getting #D enabled out of the box. As soon as I get home tonight I'll try to put some screen shots together.

Batboy or another mod: Should I post the guide here or in a new thread? Thanks.

Ok, here goes my attempt at a mini guide to getting 3D enabled in games on a new R3. When you get the brand new 3D system in the mail its absolutely (so far from 2-3 people) not set up to actually display 3D.

    1) First open the Nvidia Control Panel app and select Display > Change resolution:
    - Set the resolution to: PC 1920X1080 (recommended)
    - Set Refresh Rate to 120Hz

    2) Next go to Stereoscopic 3D > Set Up Stereoscopic 3D
    - Enable Stereoscopic 3D
    - Set stereoscopic 3D display type to : Alienware 3D vision notebook
    - Check hide effects when game starts.

    3) In that same section click on the Set Keyboard shortcuts button.
    - You will notice the option to set a shortcut for Show or Hide 3d effects is grayed out. To enable it click the arrow beside the bottom option of Hide advanced in game effects
    - check the box beside Enable advanced in game settings.
    - Now set a shortcut for the Show or Hide 3d effects option: ex: ctrl + alt+t

    apply and save

Launch your favorite supported game then when inside and ready to play put on your glasses, turn them on and hit your keyboard shortcut.

Note: also remember the shortcut to show/hide in game compatibility text as it will probably default to being shown.

Reference the attached screens for examples. For all of those who have gotten it working let me know if I missed anything.

Do you need a '3D blu-ray' to watch movies in 3D? Not sure exactly how this works, do you just start a movie and toggle as usual? Thanks :)

That I haven't tried yet as I do not yet own any 3D blu-ray's. Its next on my list of things to try. However looking at the Cyberlink PowerDVD app it is my guess from the menu options etc that its as "easy as" popping in a 3D blue-ray disk, using that app to play it, turning on the glasses and hitting the 3D button at the bottom of the app where the play, pause, etc buttons are.

Hey MJOzolins, I just got my R3 and played CoD Black ops, all I had to do was enabled 3d and toggle 120hz refresh in the nvidia control panel. To say it was immersive is an understatement....i was litterally looking around corners and dont get me started when your looking down a site scope...

Nice, what kind of frames were you getting with 3D on @ what settings?

Ive tried WoW in 3D and it runs pretty well on high @ 1920 x 1080, stays at 30+.

I dont think we can watch 3D blu-rays unless it is specifically a 3D blu-ray disc. Also I don't know if I'm being paranoid but my blu-ray drive has been a little finicky already.

Im getting an average of 45fps during the game, however it does occasionally stutter during video sequences but its not a big deal, it occurs for maybe 1 or 2 seconds and goes away. There are times when it dips in the 20's and 30's but that is when all hell is breaking loose! I am running the game at 1280x720 with no AA, 16:9 aspect, the rest is default.

I havent tried WoW yet, but it looks pretty nice from just launching the launcher (redundant isnt it..). You are correct that the BD must be 3d to get its nice pop. Believe me i've tried to get it to work with standard bd ;)

I'm just curious about how the effect of 3D is. Is it worth spending extra hundreds of dollars to upgrade to 460m and 120 Hz 3D screen? Does the 3D in game really convince you guys? As the base price of m17x r3 is about my budget, is it good enough to push me get the 460m with 3D?? or 6870 is a better choice?? ;)

Well if you dont want the 1080 screen and need to save money than you could prob just stick with the 6870.

But the deal they were running (Added gtx 460m + 120hz screen + 3D bundle) for $1699 (Before coupon, haggling etc.). I'd imagine the same or similar deal will be back when the laptop is.

As far as the 3D, I think its pretty cool so far. You are also able to adjust the depth of the 3D.

Ive been happy with it so far. It was defiantly worth it for me, but I've been gaming on a non gaming laptop for a while now so I'm easily impressed. As everyone says only buy what you can afford. Don't break your bank unless you are absolutely convinced you will like or enjoy a feature.
