    So, not knowing a heck of a lot about the new Nvidia GPU's, ive notice the new XPS17 with the sandybridge have been released with an optional 555m GPU.

    Curious how this stacks up against the new M17x R3 460m?

    Remember that a bigger model number doesn't guarantee that the GPU is any better. Notebookcheck.net states that it's a middle-class GPU that scores around 5K in Vantage. Same site states that the 460M scores 6.7K in Vantage. Not that Notebookcheck is always reputable, but its a starting point.

    555M is apparently a downgrade or a lateral move form the 445M, so it'll be slower than the 460M a good amount

    I think its because numbers are what appeal to the consumer. For instance, when I have my laptop out in public, more people than not ask me how much RAM it has, or how big the hard drive is. Both relatively meaningless.
