I've bought this card from this seller.

eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

Its supposedly the nvidia gtx 670m, but any ways i have inserted it into my alienware m17x r3. But am having a hard time getting it to recognise to install properly.

Its pretty new, so the nvidia site doesn't have any drivers. And ive tried previous drivers and it says the card is not compatible.

My bios is currently A08 but not sure if that will make a difference.

This is what it shows up in GPU-Z

You probably need a modded inf. I'll upload the 301.10 driver for you in a sec with a modded inf and some instructions :)

In the mean time, uninstall all nvidia components in your system. Uninstall the PhysX, then the HD audio, restart, then uninstall the display drivers, restart into safe mode. Run driver sweeper and clean. If you haven't got driver sweeper, get it prior to performing any uninstallations. Make sure you are void of all previous nvidia stuffs :D

    Ok so download these:
    NVIDIA - Download Drivers

Next, go to C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\301.10\WinVista_Win7_64\International and navigate into the Display.Driver folder.

You will need to place this:
    nv_disp.inf
    in that folder and overwrite.

Now, run the setup.exe and it should install.

No luck yet, :( i've replaced the nv_disp.inf file in the display.driver folder. When i go back and click on the setup.exe i get "Nvidia installer cannot continue, required files are missing" :/

I've used driver sweeper and also tried installing the driver in safe mode, no luck.
Also do you think its possible its detecting my integrated card instead? As i have nvidia optimus before and sometimes programs use that card instead :0

Tried it and i thought it was going to work but it just came up with, encountered an error and cant find file etc.

My only hope now i think is to wait until nvidia release some compatible drivers or something soon :3

Hmmm. I thought this would happen. If I am going to flash my card with a 675M vbios I wouldn't have any driver support yet... either that or you could be doing something wrong, but I doubt that. :p

Still that's a really good price for a 670M, providing that it is one.

Could it be an optimus issue? Might be worth using the custom A08 bios and disabling optimus so it only runs the 670m

Dont get too excited though, there won't be any extra perfs over the 570M @ same clocks but MAYBE if we overvolt it, it could go higher than this latter !!! wait and see :)

I am now wondering about the throttle ? Just imagine there's no throttle, that would mean the 670/675M in the M17xR3 or even M15x would run perfectly !! miam miam

Supposedly someone is gonna post the 675m vBios, so us with 580m's can flash and check throttle. If Dell is not using a really general rule for the throttle then I suspect it will be gone until we get a bios update, since these new cards will have different identifiers and such.

Sorry was busy for a couple days..

However i've more bad news as it seems the card might be having a throttling issue of some sort.

Am hoping its the lack of driver support thats just causing this.. or perhaps its a vbios or system bios problem , no idea XD

Its installed into my m17x r3 and i have applied good thermal paste to the card as well. It notices the card as a GTX 670m which is good but doesnt run quite like one.

For example i tried running unigine 3.0 and for about 5 seconds it runs fine, but then it chungs and goes down as low as 5-6 fps. It does this constantly going from 30-40fps down to 5-6 every 2-3 seconds :/

I tried running intensive games such as crysis 2 and rift, samne problem occurs.

So far i have tried 296.16 drivers and 301 nvidia drivers. no luck as of yet. I also think it could be a temperature issue.. ive seen GPU-z temperature sensor going all over the place at times. Ive included a log file when the card runs in unigine for about a minute.

    GPU-Z Sensor Log 670m.txt

i just looked at your Sensor log...you are routinely going over 80c...you are throttling. THe symptoms you describe match 100% with your logs. There is tons of discussion on here about the 78c temp throttle which you are hitting on nvidia cards

THis is bad news for those hoping that a new bios would stop the throttling because it appears it does not

You have to bring your temps down. Try a repaste, and keep the back of your laptop elevated

Yea its a pity as i thought the cooling in the m17x r3 was pretty good and not way more powerful then my current card the 460m.

I will try a repaste and raise the back see if that makes much difference.

Hope dell or something releases a bios to fix the issue

    what paste are you using?

Make sure the pads are in good condition. The 670/570 might need extra pads not found in the 460m setup

Also, raising up the back will lower temps ~7c so that will help

if you get something newer, like say MX-4, PK-1 etc...it will drop your temps a few more degrees. Every degree counts when you are fighting throttling.

in the UK, its hard to get...however, the phobya 7w/mk pads are easily attained on ebay.uk

Ok time for some good news :)

After repasting and raising up my laptop it seems to help a tiny bit. I tried unigine 3.0 benchmark again, and again it throttled.

However i downloaded HWiNFO64 and it seems to have fixed my problem :D
Ran unigine again and no throttle.

i have tried different system bios and i think A04 was the best i tried A07,8 and 10 and they seemed to have made it abit slower for some reason.

Also am using 301 nvidia drivers by widezu69 and used a modded inf suppiled by a different site. I think they are desktop drivers ones but they work fine with all the games so far i have tried.

The biggest improvement was definately downloading HWiNFO64, it pretty much didnt make my games or unigine benchmark throttle.

Only thing of worry is that, it does get quite hot as you can see in the sensor log ive supplied in a link after running unigine for 1minute. The high temperature doesnt seem to effect the performance so far. Will try and get more benchmark stuff posted here soon. Not sure if i can overclock this as its hot enough already... but i will keep u guys posted.

thanks GeoCake for the link suggestion.

Lol its so far helped alot.

I think the only way i can make it cooler now is to probably use a different thermal paste like the one you suggested the mx-4, and probably a laptop cooler as well..

So far seems to run pretty good :)

Here are my results form a overclocked gtx 460m
    675>800, 1250>1500

Or maybe because the EC in BIOS doesnt have the GTX 670M info and its fan profile so the fan doesnt work. So he had to manually set the fan.

Just for note I noticed that although the hwinfo fix is designed to set the fan profile to cut in earlier and use the max setting, it appears a side effect is disabling the 78 throttle? I saw this when testing, somehow i accidentally managed to disable the faster fan speeds and saw the temp climb to the mid 80's without a throttle before i spotted it. I can't confirm this though as since a repaste I never see more than 73C :) and i'm not too keen to push this card too much...

Makes sense Long/Slick, however isn't it concerning for akiratang to be reaching 95+ degrees WITH 100% fans, and WITH raising the back?? Assuming ambient temperatures aren't 30c + there must be something with the installation or the card itself that is astray.. After all, many R3 owners can cool the king of power drawing monsters/heat the 580m with relative ease, so presumably the 75 tdp 570m/670m should be somewhat easier to cool, yet this is clearly not happening :"(

In anycase brave akiratang I wish you luck sorting out this challenge, and with the help of some of the most prominent and sagely of Nbr members things are bound to go right!
