    clean install option....
this is a option inside the installation ? normally a uninstall last drivers, reboot, and then install new ones.

No with nvidia drivers, within the installation, you can choose an advanced option and then a clean install. This will wipe your computer of all old drivers and install new ones. I upgraded from 285.38 and it didn't even need a restart.

    Thanks for the heads up!

    • This is the recommended driver for Battlefield 3. It contains several performance and compatibility.
This is also the recommended and enhanced driver for Batman: Arkham City and RAGE.
Contains a fix for the driver timeouts reported with the R285 beta drivers.

Aha. Do you think, there is a difference, if i uninstall the old ones, first, reboot, and then install the new one ?

It did ask me to restart before it finished instaling the new drivers, every thing went well. GPU-Z show the that the new drivers are installed.
Thanks for the INFO widezu69 +1 rep for you.

Not really but I still recommend the clean install option even if you uninstall your old ones first. If upgrading from anything lower than 285, it will prompt a restart.

Guys with the M17x (1st release especiallym also tested on M17x R2 with 285M, should work for the R3 also), i modded the inf files so you can take advantage of these drivers too, enjoy.
    Follow these steps:
    • Download the 285.62 drivers to your Desktop(or wherever you want)
    • Double click and let them extract the files in the default directory (C:\NVIDIA)
    • download my attached archive and extract the two files
    • cut/copy them and paste in "C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\285.62\WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver
      And replace originals"
    • Go back to the "International" folder and run setup.exe
    • continue performing normal installation steps, choosing Custom(Advanced)>Next>and check Perform a clean installation>Next and at the windows prompt choose Install...anyway
    • Reboot when prompted and voila
    • Don't forget to reenable SLi in nVIDIA control Panel
    Cheers

ill download the drivers and install them later this afternoon, hope laptop2go finished the inf already.

Edit: as of the time i checked laptop2go only has the 285.58 drivers modded, not the newest one

I downloaded it on my m17x R3 running GTX 580m. Installed fine. However, there is a bug. After install and restart, Firefox 7 cannot right click !

    Anyone had this issue?

Small Question: What exactly is nvwi.inf doing ?

I added support for 560M many times in the past changing only nvdm.inf file and that is working quite nicely... thats why I ask.

    My device/hardware ID is
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1251&SUBSYS_02A21028

Does anyone know if these will support the 460M w/Optimus or do we need to wait for a modded .inf?

So i installed from 285.38 with CIO, and it wants reboot. (I guess because probably some older component remain during my uninstall-reboot-install process the first time), seems CIO is definetly better. Thank you.

I wonder why the 560m does not require a modded .inf but the 460m apparently does require it?

How did yours respond Jackson Roy?

Because the 560M strings are present in the .inf file while the 460M ones are missing. That's why they have to be added manually ;)

I am under the impression that if you update your vbios to the latest on the Dell website you can install newer drivers.

Yeah what's the vbios all about I tried reading it but couldn't make sense of it xD Either way I did not installed them, still installed fine.

For the latest 280.26 the 580m did not required a modded file while the 560m did xD I guess it's some sort of lottery.

I downloaded the 285.62 driver and i just modded the nvwi.inf file

added the "PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0DD1" (that's 460m) in several sections as per examples i have

AND it installed on my Asus g73 (with gtx 460m)

So its not difficult to do...maybe i should make a guide

Can anyone confirm that flashing the 460m to the newest version will make it so that drivers direct from nvidia will install? Also, is it okay the have higher drivers than dell provides before flashing the VBIOS?

Yeah vbios flashing is not affected by driver version. I cannot comment on the 460m as I don't have that card.

Manually needed to mod inf for installation on my R1 with dual 260M + 9400M (both hardware ids missing from original nvdm.inf). Screen went completely black during install, so I waited 'a while' and forced shutdown. After reboot everything installed and working fine. Maybe the 'black screen' during installation is the reason why the cards aren't in the inf anymore?

Thanks for the modded inf's. Even thought he nvidia page clearly shows that GTX 280M is supported by this driver, it did not detect my GPUs on the R1. +rep'ed

What is the best way to get the Fn + F4/F5 brightness functions to work? I installed with the 9400M on and in hybrid mode. Then I disabled both and now on SLI. The brightness doesn't change but the OSD does appear.

Yes I updated the vbios and I still have to use a modified inf.
As I see it, the update shouldn't change the hardware id of your card.

There is no connection between your vBIOS and drivers not having the IDs.
If the strings are not there to begin with, it won't work after you flash with the Dell vBIOS either. The vBIOS should've changed the card's ID and I doubt it does, as in this situation the flashing process has to be 'forced' or it won't work.

That is what i was thinking also but for some reason i had no problem up-dating to the newest Nvida drivers with out having to mod the inf. file after i did the vbios update. are you sure the vbios did actualy update. or maybe I am not realy sure why it works for some and not others, I have the 3D version so maybe optomus is the common problem for most.

its the optimus that's the problem, i have looked in the past and saw that hybrid graphics aren't supported. When the 580m came out they fixed the incompatibilities for them but left us people with the 460m hanging.

This often happens to me, though it didn't this time, so I just use RDP (or LogMeIn) from another machine to remote into the laptop and perform a clean restart. I don't like the idea that the new driver files could get corrupted by forced reboot, even after waiting some time.

I also have to remember to always use the clean install option or 9 times out of 10 I'll get a BSOD part way through.

What is it with nVidia and leaving out the models in the .inf file? They did it way back when a beta then went release, and since then even in some but not all betas my 9400+280m is always missing. It must be a very rare bug if that's why they leave it out as I never have any issues once the driver gets installed.

    anisotrosopic 16 x = same ingame
anti aliasing gamma correction = on
anti aliasing setting = tried all works fine
anti aliasing transparency = 8x supersample

maximum pre rendered frames = 8
    negative LOD bias = Allow
    Texture quality = High Quality
    threaded optimization = on
    triple buffering = off

What I've noticed is that when the 9400M is enabled, display brightness can be controlled via Fn + F4/F5. If the 9400M is disabled, then it's a bit of a fluke to get the brightness controls. The 280.26 drivers allowed brightness contol with the 9400M disabled. These 285.62 don't...yet.

There's also the combination issue: Install with Integrated (9400M) enabled + Hybrid enabled or Integrated enabled + Hybrid disabled or Integrated + Hybrid both disabled. If hybrid or integrated enabled during install then can/should they be disabled later for performance + brightness control. Or should hybrid + integrated always be disabled.

...different drivers seem to behave differently with the above combos.
