Can somebody help getting this work for my GTX 260 SLI? Says no compatible Hardware found, so I guess will need a modded INF?
EDIT: Worked with the modded once from katalin, is there any problem in using thos with GTX 260 SLI?

Laptop2go's modded inf works for the 460m now. Turns out the modder forgot to add all the hybrid ID's to the inf :p

My 580M updated without any mods.
    Rage now plays without flicker!

P.S I find I always have to reinstall this PhysX thing after every update to allow 3D Vantage to work. Is this normal?

So i used the modded files and now I'm able to get to the installation phase.

But, the installation is failing every single time about 25% of the way through (judging by the little green bar). All it says is Nvidia driver installation failed. On the list of components, the graphics drivers and control panel are listed as failed.

    What am I doing wrong?

My GPUs are 260Ms in SLI and the integrated 9400 btw.

if u used Kaitlyn's mod and it didn't work you could always try this. Just download the modded inf and place it in the file normally and it should work. hope this helps :)

Try these, also tell me if audio thru HDMI works (if you can test), i'm not home and did these quick so you can at least get them installed and continue from here.

Make sure to uninstall previous ones, reboot when prompted, clean registry and choose custom install and perform clean install ;)
Let me kniow how it goes.

Well, this time when I did it, it got to about the same point, then my screen went black for 3 or 4 minutes. When it came back, same error message as before. Also, Windows asked me twice to verify that I wanted to install these drivers because it claims it couldn't verify who produced them.

I still am getting a failure and crash out when it tries to install the nvidia control panel. I wish the damned thing could give me a log so I can figure out what exactly is going wrong.

This is what worked for me to get the 285.62 'installed' (R1 with 260M SLI). Note I had a black screen during install, waited a long while before force shutdown, but it installed, see earlier post on page 4). Someone else installed the same way without any trouble. So executing procedure is at your own risk (procedure only suitable for 260m, don't know ids of 280m).

    1. Execute downloaded 285.62 driver and let it unpack (cancel after hw incomp blabla)

    2. Go to C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\285.62\WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver

    3. Open ListDevices.txt:
    lookup this line
    DEV_0617&SUBSYS_019C1028 "NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTX"
    and add this line below
    DEV_0618&SUBSYS_02A11028 "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M"
    lookup this line
    DEV_0862&SUBSYS_02711028 "NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G"
    and add this line below
    DEV_0862&SUBSYS_02A11028 "NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G"

    4. Save ListDevices.txt

    5. Open nvdm.inf
    lookup this line
    %NVIDIA_DEV.0617.01% = Section007, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0617&SUBSYS_019C1028
and add this line below (note: this is our hw id, but you can't just copy the line from a previous version like 280.26 because apparently nvidia changed the section nr to be applied. same goes for next additions)
    %NVIDIA_DEV.0618.01% = Section007, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0618&SUBSYS_02A11028

    lookup this line
    %NVIDIA_DEV.0617.01% = Section008, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0617&SUBSYS_019C1028
    and add this line below
    %NVIDIA_DEV.0618.01% = Section008, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0618&SUBSYS_02A11028

    lookup this line
    NVIDIA_DEV.0617.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTX"
    and add this line below
    NVIDIA_DEV.0618.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M"

    lookup this line
    %NVIDIA_DEV.0862.01% = Section027, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0862&SUBSYS_02711028
    and add this line below
    %NVIDIA_DEV.0862.02% = Section027, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0862&SUBSYS_02A11028

    lookup this line
    %NVIDIA_DEV.0862.01% = Section028, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0862&SUBSYS_02711028
    and add this line below
    %NVIDIA_DEV.0862.02% = Section028, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0862&SUBSYS_02A11028

    lookup this line
    NVIDIA_DEV.0862.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G"
    and add this line below
    NVIDIA_DEV.0862.02 = "NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G "

    6. Save nvdm.inf

    7. run installer again. I did clean install and only installed drivers + physics (no 3d stuff). Again, my screen went black and I waited 'enough' time for disk activity to cease. I'm not guaranteeing anything, but if you have a good backup, it's worth the try. I earlier made the mistake myself by not taking care of the correct 'sections' mentioned in the lines. In that case I was able to restart in safe mode and uninstall nvidia drivers and install previous version again.

    Good luck

That's what's wrong, section numbers were wrong in my .inf, everything else is ok.
I'll upgrade them so people with 260M can take advantage of them.

I'm still getting a failure when it tries to install the Control Panel, even with following your steps Belien. I may? have screwed them up, so after Kat fixes her inf I can try that again.

When I looked at my Windows Control Panel, I'm actually still seeing an icon for the Nvidia Control Panel, even after I'm uninstalled the drivers and run CCleaner. It also still has its folder in the Windows folder. I'm wondering if it isn't uninstalling entirely and could be causing the failure?

I also wonder if this has to do with my last drivers being from Dell, and not Nividia. Hell if I know.

I'm going to peruse the Nvidia forums to see if anybody else has been having this kind of failure, but if you guys have any ideas I'm open to them.

This thing is really starting to get on my nerves.

Wild guess here, but could you install the driver version of the control panel again, and try to uninstall it from the original uninstaller. Next, try booting in safe mode and let windows only install default vga drivers. Then repeat installation of the latest ones again. Hope it helps (or maybe you tried already...)

EDIT: best do a CCleaner registry clean after install vga drivers

Tried it. Still getting the failure. I'm close to moving all my files to my external and trying a fresh install of windows 7 to see if that works.

Does anybody know where the setup log file is stored? I've seen some people on the nvidia forum mention it, but I don't know where it's located. It might give us some idea of what the exact failure is during the installation.

I just tried installing the 285.38 and 285.58 using the modded inf's from laptopvideo2go and had the exact same problem for both of them - failure when trying to install the nvidia control panel.

    Ugh.

Did anyone tried overclocking with 285.62 yet?

I have the impression 285.62 crashes earlier compared to older 280.26

    Max I can push = core 885 versus 910 with 280.26.
In 3dmarkvantge the difference is about 800 Performance points less

Next to it being a horrible installation, had to remove manually the old driver, modify the inf / add my device/hw ID,
load the correct sections in inf, etc etc
A few nvidia seconds (read hours) later ...

I wonder why it made WHQL

Nick, you might want to try this:

-Reboot in Safe Mode and uninstall PhysX and nVIDIA Display drivers,
-reboot in Safe mode once again and run CCleaner and clean your registry
-Reboot normally and give the 285.62 another try with modded inf.

Update on my status: So with Katalin's modded .inf files I could install the 285 driver and I can play BF3 for many many hours straight...but if I go to other games like DUCO, which uses the Unreal 3 engine, the game plays for 30mins then the whole system locks.
Tested with other games and same thing, 30mins to 1hour into it, the whole system just locks.
But I can go back to BF3 and play for like 4 - 5 straight, no problems.

If I roll back to the last official supported drivers from Nvidia for my 280ms, the 280.xx drivers, I can play both BF3 and Unreal 3 based games without locking...

    Interesting....

Well, I'm able to play BF3 without the new drivers, just by ignoring the error message it brings up. I'll probably have stability issues, but I guess it's alright that I can play now.

First of all wanna thank katalin for his tremendous work - u rock))

Got exactly the same issues with the latest drivers (system with dual SLI GTX 260M) as nick but managed to solve 'em.
I got lucky on this one:
    - system couldn't even check compatability with the 285.62 so i deleted previous GPU drivers manually via Control Panel
    - after that rebooted pc and and replaced both .inf files on katalin's modded files
    - but during the installation process error message popped up several times forcing me to restart laptop
    - and when i almost gave up everything went smooth as silk

So guys, if you having problems trying to install these, and you can't - don't loose hope))
Files are completely fine, just read the thread - your answer is here.

Thx Katalin. I have a M17xR1 Dual2core, GTX 260m SLI, 4 gig ram, win 64, and did this step by step and the installation went well. Only thing that was mentioned that i did not have to do after reboot was reenable the SLI in the control panel, it was already enabled.

But then when i thought i was good to go for some BF3 action, a new problem occurs. I got freezes/lag (in windows and in browsers etc), and i see my CPU is working at 90%-100% without any programs open.

I have tried to run system cleaner, defrag etc without any help. My first guess is that this driver simply is not compatible with my hardware but i can see other guys in this thread with the same specs as me that dont have this problem. Following your steps above i presumed that older drivers got deleted when i installed this new one or maby it didn`t? Do u know what causes this and/or what i can do about it?

    Thanks in advance.

Did you uninstall previous drivers before installing these?
    I don't have BF3 so can't test that game :(
While these drivers are not the best out there for anybody (small performance loss compared to previous beta) they don't create huge issues.

Most of all can you access BIOS menu go to Advanced then Graphic Settings and tell me if PCIe Gen2 is enabled or disabled?

Thanks for your swift replay mate! :)

I did not do anything else than following your instructions and i thought it did this (deleting prev drivers) automatically with the advanced inst and perform clean install? Should i use Phyxion Driver Sweeper (or a similar program) first and then try to instal the driver again maby?

I`m at work atm but i can check the Graph settings in BIOS when i come home and post my findings here if that would be of help.

    Thanks again

    No worries :)
I advice you to uninstall PhysX first via Control Panel, reboot in Safe Mode and uninstall current display drivers via Control Panel, reboot in Safe Mode one more time, run CCleaner and clean your registry. Reboot normally and reinstall 285.62.

If you find PCIe Gen2 enabled, just set it to disabled.
    That should do it.

    Cheers

Thx for pro tips. I have now done all this above (when i finally found out how to start in safe mode (F8), it went well) :p

Nevertheless, i still got this horrible CPU usage. It is bouncing from 0-100% regularly, and if using programs like Firefox it`s mostly between 70-100% and lagging bad, so no change.

It is strange because i`v now done all the changes u have listed with apparently no faults. No error messages or black screens which i see others get, but still this CPU spikes and slowdowns after installing 285.62. I manually uninstalled the NVDIA physx, Nvidia Graphics driver and Nvidia 3d vision driver from the windows control p first. Must be something i have missed somehow somewhere, could it be other software updates that is required for this to work properly that i haven`t installed?

Maybe i just as well should try to install a previous 285 driver instead like 285.38? Do u know where i can find modded inf files regarding my GTX 260m cards and for ex the 285.38 driver? Tanks again

Are you in anyway able to uninstall/remove whichever version of nvidia drivers it is you're running? The only thing I could think of now is that even after uninstall some files remain 'installed' and 'registered' which is hindering a new installation. A (very) long time ago (think it was with the dell beta 25x drivers) I used 'driversweeper' to clean out the mess. Although someone (I think it's Batboy) mentioned not to do so because the program is quite 'old', it worked for me (watch out though not to uninstall nvidia software related to network/raid (if any). I think I even deleted some remnant files after uninstall and did a ccleaner again. I just checked the directory under Program Files but I think they changed some folders, so can't help you on this.

So do you get better performance disabling PCIe Gen2?
    What exactly does it do?

    Thanks!

    Not really, you gain stability.
With it on, drivers will try to run your cards @ 16x bandwidth or close but they won't so you'll get all sorts of freezes, pink/green etc. screens and probably BSODs. Even the ATi cards with this option on they'll run @ 8x anyway.

Glad to see another happy user!
    Enjoy

I cannot seem to get the nvidia control panel to open. I have tried every combination of uninstalling/reinstalling drivers and physX that I can find in this thread. I have tried both katalin's and Laptop2Go's modified .inf files.

When the drivers finish installing, the info box says nvidia update components failed to install and PhysX did not install . I am at a loss of what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

I just recently got an m17x about 3 weeks ago, but have not used it for any gaming as of yet (Just tested if Witcher 2 would run in the first week, but nothing else because of school).

    This is for a 580m:

So I've been running on stock Dell drivers, but does loading the Nvidia drivers void any warranty terms?

If not, how do you go about loading the drivers?
Uninstall Dell drivers and then just install Nvidia drivers? Or is there more to it?

Ivander, it happens to me on occasion to with my 280M SLI, but it usually goes away by itself after a few seconds.

Hi there, haven´t posted much here but here is a problem for you to dig into ;)

My setup is a M17x R1 with the Nvidia chipset and SLI 280GTX
So i´ve installed the 285.62 using the stated method and modified INF.
BF3 runs fine now, however, some issues have arisen to annoy me utterly.

From time to time at startup the screen flashes after the login screen in windows and after that it turns black entirely, and i´m forced to do a hard reset(i.e push the power button)

The same problem occurs when i try to plug in my HDMI cable to use my TV as a extension to my monitor. This happens everytime though.
The standard laptop screen also comes up as screen nr 3, without any chance of changing this?? :S

    Anyone else having this problem??
And does someone have any idea how to adress the problem?

    if so, please advice :)

    Thanks in advance
