Recently my old GTX 675m went bad and I found a used GTX 770m from a computer shop. I bought it and had it installed into my Alienware M17X R4. It took me most of the day after I got my computer back to figure out how to install the modded drivers. Now things are working, except that Nvidia doesn't detect my monitor as a 3D monitor. It still runs at 120Hz at least.
At this point, I'm not upset really, since I have a 3D TV and I can use that if I want to play games in 3D. However, I did like having the 3D laptop monitor. I have two questions: Is there a modded nvidia driver that will let me detect my 3D display? If not, is there a way to enable the intel HD drivers? Since Dell disables the Intel HD adapter for customers who buy 3D displays for their laptops,I don't know how that is done and if it is permanent. I assume that the intel chips from ivy-bridge and on have the graphics processor built into the CPU, but I might be wrong. Ideally, I'd like to either get the nvidia 3D vision to work again or possibly enable the Intel HD adapter instead. My bios does not detect any integrated video adapter, which leaves me to think that it is unlikely that I can ever use the intel graphics driver.

Hi,
Unfortunately there is not a lot you can do. The machine has a 3D certification list in the bios and it is this that allows the 3D to be detected. The list only contains NV cards sold with the model. The best you can put in it is a 680m. I recently upgraded mine from the 675m to the 680m. Since it is an 'approved' card everything just works the same - don't even need modified drivers.
The problem dell had was that the panel is 120hz ONLY. Not a multi-sync like you would see with an external monitor. When a machine starts the POST it tests out the components it finds, since the intel cannot boot at 120hz POST fails. The way dell 'fixed' this problem was a second port on the MB that the 120hz display is connected to. This effectively disables the iGPU so it is never available.
The only fix (for the 3D to work on a 770m) would be a modified bios but although this has been asked for quite a bit it has never materialised - too small a market I guess.
I did see one person get it working by plugging in the 3D emitter from a stand alone desktop kit. This appeared to trigger the driver to install all the components. I can't remember if he was using an external monitor though

Thanks for the response! At least I finally understand what the situation is. While it would be nice to have the intel adapter, it's not really nessisary since most of the time I use my computer I have it plugged in. It's main purpose it to serve as a powerful portable desktop, so I don't really need to save battery power. I have noticed that I have a little bit more battery life now with the 770m since it uses less power. It's a bit upsetting that Dell never really mentions the problem with 3D monitors and the Intel HD adapter, but it's not a major loss to me.
I have the Nvidia 3D vision 2 kit. I might just see if I can find a cheap used emitter off e-bay. I did that once before with an old computer. I bought just the emitter since I had my 3D glasses that came with my TV. Come to think of it, I think my brother has a nvidia kit. I might just have to bum his emitter to check! Thanks for the help! -
Sorry, I double posted and I cant see a delete option.

Let me know how it goes, it could be a cheap option if they are available
.
It makes me mad every time I see these issues when as you can see a couple of sentences in the product description by Dell would make people's choices clearer.
120hz display - only NV cards
3D - Only cards sold with the model
Shortened battery life omitted.
So many people not getting the machine they expect especially the battery life - it is important to some people although like you, this is a DTR and pretty much is always plugged in. I was determined that I could figure out a way to use the Intel, all I managed to do was brick the machine

Yikes! Yeah, I'm not willing to risk bricking my computer, so if worst comes to worse I can just stick to my 3D TV when I feel like going 3D. All in all, I'm happy with my Alienware laptop, though in the future I may consider getting the X51 or something like that if I decide to replace my current laptop. I like the portability of being able to take your computer on vacations!

Interesting that the 3D Play (the bit that supports 3D TV with side-by-side) still works. This is normally an addin that you need to purchase from NV if all you want is 3D TV. It gets automatically installed and appears as a licensed product in the driver when (I'm guessing) the emitter is detected.
Looks like Dell have a card ID verification at boot and the 3D does not install correctly if it is not listed? Probably the panel as well, which should show up in the driver as '3D vision Ready'. Annoying since there is no technical reason any NV card should not work.
Keep your eye out for a 680m - as good as the 770m if not better -
Yeah, that could be it. I know the driver is there and the emitter is recognized. I think the driver doesn't detect the monitor has 3D. I get a message like that when I try to install the 3d driver again.
I may just have to consider getting a 680m someday, maybe if my 770m goes bad in the future. -

I can't game with 3d on personall, 120hz 2 always looked smoother and better quality than 60 3d and had a bigger impact on the game play I found.

I've decided to not worry about it. I really haven't used the 3D much this last year and I can always just use my TV if I want to.

Nviida 3D Works for 3D TV Play, but not on 3D Laptop Monitor
