    Hey Everyone,

Looking to upgrade my M17xR2 to SSD... Does anyone know if the one in the subject line will work?

    Thanks,
    Bone

I don't see why not and these SSD's are getting pretty cheap I might add.

Here are two recent threads discussing the topic: I'm planning on putting a 256GB Samsung 830 Series in my R2 next month. In addition to what's in those threads, I've found out a little bit more from research: The R2 only supports SATA II (not SATA III, the current standard); this means a ceiling of 3Gbps instead of 6Gbps, regardless of which drive you buy. I found this a bit distressing, I found an article highlighting real-world performance differences, and it's basically negligible except for a few extreme situations ( See Here).

The Samsungs seem to be fairly fast and stable in the landscape as a whole. The 830 Series is being phased out in favor of a new 840 Series, which has significantly lower power consumption and slightly better throughput performance (I don't remember too many specifics, but the tech specs are easy to find). Amazon lowered their price to clear out stock a few days ago (it's back up though, because Amazon's fulfillment centers were depleted, and the other merchants didn't lower their prices), but you may be able to find sales again elsewhere if you're interested in that model.

Samsung 830 is definitely a worthy choice, considering how their price is significantly lowered than when they first came out. 256Gb is on sale for $170 on newegg right now. Men, it's so tempting :D.

If you have to go with OCZ for some reasons, try to go for Vertex 4. Its controller is better than Agility, I think.

I have an 810 in one of my R3's . I bought it from the outlet and instead of the 830+ 750GB drives it listed it just had the 750gb. I called them and they shipped an 810 next day, but considering the price was good and it was probably a mistake in the listing to begin with I didn't squawk :) . That 512gb looks very tempting for the price. the only thing that stops me is reinstalling everything . When 750gb SSD's get cheap I'm on it.
