Would it be possible to get the 120gb version of the vertex 3 series and have the 240gb in raid0 ? I guess they are identical except for the size of the disk.

    No.
    1. Raid 0 requires the disks be of the same capacity
    2. (if you're asking about an r3, as it is the only sata3 capable alienware at this time...)Although it is unconfirmed with 3rd gen vertex, sandforce based ssd will bsod or otherwise crash when combined with intel rapid storage technology, which is the only method of raid @r3

I would personally just set it to AHCI (I think? I'm no expert in this stuff), and have a 240gb vertex 3 for windows os and games and stuff that needs to be accessed fast, and then a 500gb momentus xt, or 750gb 7200rpm, or even a 1tb 5400rpm as the second mass storage container for media.

Personally I plan on doing the above with the vertex 3 240gb and a 1tb 5400rpm media/storage drive. I mean, yes raid 0 has some awesome speeds, but considering how fast the vertex already is, how fast do you really need?

Actually, most definitions of RAID level 0 state that the drives do not need to be identical in size, but the resulting stripe set will be limited to 2 times the size of the smallest drive. This could however be some limitation of the controller in the R3, not sure about that. All RAID 0 schemes are proprietary and differ in implementation by controller manufacturer.

New question in same thread, will that drive fit? I mean the 1 tb 7200 rpm drive i linked in the post above. It´s got a height of 14,8mm. And yes it´s the R3 i´m talking about.

Sorry, but I don't think it'll fit short of modding your case. Max the r3 can fit is a 2.5in i believe, the only 1tb 2.5inchers currently are samsung and another brand that doesn't pop in my head at the moment, and they are only 5400rpm :(

Honestly though, if you are hoarding media and stuff, it really doesn't matter the speed of the drive. The ssd will definitely pick up your system a lot.

The R3 won't take the 12.5mm 1TB hard drive. Someone confirmed it in the thread about 1TB drives. Run your largest SSD for the OS, games, and apps. Then buy a standard thickness 750GB 7,200RPM drive. RAID0 SSD is for nothing other than just to say you're doing it. The speeds that are achieved are overkill.
