Why do you need to up your memory voltage? I imagine if you got the ram from dell it would be within voltage spec. Unless you bought 3rd party ram that required more voltage than the default voltage, then I could see a reason to up it.

It should be fine as yes it is included as an option it just a choice of when to stop before there is problems. Its worth checking what memory you currently have and finding the optim voltage recommended. I would just double check your warranty to make sure you dont break the agreement by changing this option.
Research, research, research before testing as this is different with every machine. -
Dont need to at al, and yes its all from Dell, like I said I was looking in the BIOS and saw that option....just was wondering if I would get more performance with it is all
-
Yea, I kinda look at it l;ike the TURBO option, its in the BIOS...so assumed people will use it, and probably safe since its in the BIOS.

Like we have said just check and if you do change, change in small increments, good luck -
Turbo mode is a feature of the i-core processors, not an overclocking option (i.e. it's sanctioned by intel). The chip is designed to throttle if the thermal/electrical limits get out of spec.
I don't see much benefit to over/undervolting the RAM unless you're replacing the RAM with different spec'd RAM or trying to overclock--but there's no options to do that with the QM processors, only the XMs. -
How do you check what version of Command Centre you have?
Thanks -
Im watching some dvds on my new m17xr2 and the picture looks kinda grainy or pixelated. Can that be fixed or is it normal?
i have the rgb led screen btw -
What resolution are the videos?

Hey guys can anybody who has a machine with 6gb of ram confirm his windows 7 experience rating for the ram please. I was just wondering whether the 6gb are slower than the 4gb modules or the 8gb modules.
-
Windows Rating is useless. I think Toms hardware did some benchmark for dual channel & single channel ram. According to them performance difference is next to nothing.
-
You cannot have 6gb dual channel ram ?
-
nope.. but more ram = Better performance (In supported applications)
-
Basically one stick is 4GB and the other is 2GB. They don't have 3GB sticks in them.
-
Link to the Tom's article in my previous post
-
Ok thanks man + rep.
AW says that the 6gigs is dual channel for the m17x but as always they are just words -
Personally I still want dual channel regardless. I'd never get anything that's not 4 or 8GB...I just need the knowledge it's operating as fast as it can
-
The manual says that 6GB configs run in single channel mode only.

Hi All,
Finally ordered my M17x-r2
Too bad no RGBLED screen option available in the Netherlands, but I've seen it on ebay so I might pick one up later and upgrade.
First alienware I buy since sitting on the fence for many years. After reading up all the info here and elseware I could not resist anymore... -
Congrats and welcome to the club! That RGB is a must according to all those that got it already so eBay or not get it somehow
-
Yep I concur with that statement, the LED RGB is amazing
-
Yeah from what I gather the RGBLED is indeed grand.
Before ordering the M17x I ordered a Studio XPS 16 w RGBLED but canceled it due to the issues reported(heat etc) and then finally figured it's time stop compromising, bite the bullet and sock out for an Alienware. Was holding out for a bit waiting for the RGBLED to come back in stock but then finally the pull of the abduction ray from the Alien Saucer was too strong
.
I noticed also the insane markup they have on the dutch site for processor upgrades, something like 1000+ euro for upgrade from 720QM to 920XM, and 480euro to go 720QM -> 820QM
Quick check on ebay brough up several 820QM's for ~200euro and 920XM for a little over 400 euro.
So I got the 720QM, and will go the ebay route for 820 or 920 later.
I wonder why they charge these prices, they must have something like a 60% markup gain on components or so..
Anyways my spec: M17x, space black, i7 720QM, 4 gig 1333, Crossfire 4870s, 1920x1200 CCFL and twin 160GB disks.
The disk choices on the dutch site are also out of whack, only dual mechanical HDD's, and always in Raid 1 of all things
So SSD + 500GB will be sourced elsewhere. -
idk, im just watching them on the power dvd program.

Megacharge Custom User Title
Try watching them full screen through Windows Media Player. -
Hmm..I use PowerDVD 9 and no issues here...what ver ya use ?

Okay, I'm back to the Alienware camp once again! If you thought the M17x is expensive, the M6500's will knock you off your socks! My Dell Rep says it is because the M6500 undergoes rigorous industry standard testing and we are charged for that whereas the Alienware does not so we get lots of discounts. He quoted me $2,700 for a i720 720QM, 3-year CompleteCover (from accidental damage), 1 ATI Radeon HD4870, RGB LED screen, 6GB 1333 Mhz DDR3, 256GB SSD, standard slot-load DVD burner/writer, Win 7 Home Premium. He was extra nice to me because of all the trouble I went through with the M15x so I really couldn't say no to this new offer. He again confirmed that there will be no refresh to the M17x until May the earliest so I decided to put in my order today!
Now, I'm just waiting for it to be assembled and shipped from China. If it doesn't arrive before the end of the month, my Dell Rep says he will change it to a M6500 for me and have it delivered in less than a week since it is assembled in Malaysia. He says that most of the Malaysian assembly operations will be shifted to China soon though. I also found out that CompleteCover does not transfer out of the Asia Pacific region but next business day on-site warranty transfers to North America. I wonder how Dell manages to regulate its pricing since traveling in North America is so much farther than traveling in Malaysia. Pretty interesting facts about Dell from my friendly Dell rep. ^_^ -
Hello guys,
I have a question, do you guys think that I need a notebook cooler for the M17x-R2? One of those flat metallic bases with fans to cool it down?
I am moving to Brazil on the next week and I the city I'm going to live has a pretty intense summer, with temperatures always above 85-90 F. -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
A nice cooler under $100.00 won't make a dent in your pocket. You already got into a wreck.
You know what i mean.
-
Thanks for the info. It's shame that we have to wait until May. I might wait for m17x refresh coz I have my desktop to play games.

Yup, I think it is worth the wait too since May is just the month after next but unfortunately, I am about to travel so I need it before the end of the month. >_<
-
If that's really the case, I'll kick my Dell Rep. *LOL* >_<
-
so i hit boxing i can now post on a regular here soon!
-
Or wait another month after that and get ready for the GT 200 SLi announcement
Can't wait.
-
Why we need to go for a old DX10.1 when we have DX11
-
Don't care about DX 11 in a notebook for this generation. I want maximum speed and reliable drivers/hardware. I'm just stuck with ATi right now, I'd much rather have the GT 200 in my system. -
I need future proof tech & I think with 10.3 drivers we don't have any driver support issue.
-
Trying to future proof using notebook technology is a self defeating endeavor. You're already far behind the curve in technology when purchasing a notebook so hoping it will run the latest and greatest for a few years to come is an unrealistic expectation. The DX 11 portion of the ATi 5870m will be meaningless.
-
Been using my M17X to stream Netflix to the T.V. and while the HD video part is great the audio has a lot of feedback/interference. I am using the RCA jacks on the side of the notebook - does anyone know of a better way to get the audio into my receiver from the M17X? Could it be the cable I am using or am I just stuck with lackluster audio?
-
If the M17x has hdmi then you should be able to output audio through that. I had heard mention that ATI inlcuded audio support but it may not be on the 4870. If a different audio cable doesn't work maybe try a different driver or change the audio settings
-
Yup, the 4870's output sound just fine via HDMI to an HDTV. It's really plug-and-play, unlike Nvidia's 260's from my experience.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
and the HDMI output from the ATIs will be far superior compared to the nvidias as far as codec support and surround and such
is what I have heard..... -
Check out all the cool products at the Dell Suites in the Palms this year (CES 2010). There's a game room just for Alienware products! Can you spot a M17x in the background despite the focus on the M11x?
http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1142001844808&ref=nf -
That's what I'm saying we are already far behind, so why you need old tech? I never use any notebook more than 2 years (Actually my current max is 17months), for the next 2 years if DX11 be become mainstream, I can play games with CF support.
-
It's not THAT far behind, is it? Seems like the high end notebook GPUs are roughly half the hardware as a high end desktop GPU...which is still a lot of hardware.
I'm confused they why they can give us two 800 core parts or two 128 core parts (ATi/Nvidia) but not one 1600 or 240 core parts...
Ended up preordering a G73jh yesterday, though....darn, I don't know. I'm kind of annoyed by the whole 4870 thing though. Hope I don't regret getting ATi graphics (always have in the past) on either of these systems.
