That's awesome news jubbing! Mine should be here in 4-8 days. Got the same specs as you did except I opted for the 8 gig RAM and the default processor (since it costs a bomb to upgrade >.<).

I hope the default processor isn't too bad. :/ Also, just wondering, does the 920s give a huge performance boost?

Oh, and I'm thinking of getting the G35 Logitech headset too. Hopefully the in-built sound card (from what I've heard) is compatible with the M17x. (I'm a newbie with audio systems >.>) I hope the Dolby 7.1 thing works.

    Hey Congrats (soon) Shimmer!

I got the 940XM, its not much different from the 920XM in terms of performance, but its a slight bump. They're the two fastest ones for Alienware's at the very least!

    Audio wise I haven't a clue!

    Hello all,

I just bought a M17X. Tell me the WUXGA RGB-LED screen is good..., it's the main reason I went with it.

No, but really :D what do you all think about the screen?

    Bright? Good color?

It's not arriving for 2 weeks and I'm nervous since it was an impulse buy (bing had 25% off)

I saw an ad of a Samsung (I think) LCD TV with 1080 pixels then I looked at M17x's specs. 1200 pixels. xD! Woot!

Too bad I have no idea what pixels mean. Still, if it's more it's good, right? :D

absolutely good for games , not so good for movies as there are no 1200p movies (i least havent found any) so you see black lines over and down the video

Yea, that's why I was looking at 1080p screens too. But I'd rather have a WUXGA screen that has great colors & brightness w/ 60 pixel black bars than one with a washed out screen and no black bars ;)

Videos played much better on my M15x, but games are SO MUCH better on the M17x (video quality wise).
Videos that are small feel stretched.. so it doesn't quite do it justice.

Error - 5870's do not use half the power
5870 TDP does not include memory. Add 15-20W TDP for memory to their figure.

As in the computer color? Just the black matte finish. I'm finding it a different finish than the Black I had with the M15x, its alarmingly less of a fingerprint magnet!
But I must say the Red looks quite nice as well from pictures.

17" vs 15" does make a difference as you are guessing

    148-114=34W power difference

The 15" is running at lower resolution.

The screen takes probably 5W less to run maybe a bit more.

The 480M (which can be either 1gb or 2gb) was 2gb vs the 5870's 1gb so there is another 19W (reference where the 19W comes from see the comparison of power draw between a 1GB and 2GB 5870 desktop card http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...hire-hd-5870-2gb-toxic-edition-review-22.html)

I'm going to say 3W for the resolution difference, but that's purely an estimate and I might be low.

34-5-19-3=7W net power difference between the two chips configured as 1GB cards. These web estimates of huge power differences in the cards are not correct.

Your 19W figure is off because the Sapphire 5870 "Toxic" has an overclocked core and that's where most of the additional power consumption comes from. The difference in power consumption for the amount of ram is probably 3-5W max.

Joker go have a look at the clocks in other tests. There is a 1GB toxic. 19W isn't all that far off.

For what it's worth: just installed A06 bios on myM17X-R2 without a hitch, but still no VT-D support. Hence, no XenClient :-(
VT-X is there, so vmware works very well indeed
I already replaced the Windows 7 Home, which was very unstable, but I find Windows 7 Professional is also erratic on the M17X.
I'm wondering how a windows client on top of vmware on Ubuntu server might pan out. would it allow for gaming at all?

    Cheers

240gb raid0 ssd with Garbage collection (instead of trim)
    hd5870m crossfire

    plugged into:
    Dell U2711
    Razer Mamba
    Alienware tactx keyboard

Now I just need to sell my crazy overpowered oppulent unnecessary desktop!

I know this has been announced for a little while now (long enough that I thought I'd find some posts mentioning it at least) but wanted to bring it up here as I think it would be the perfect fit for these beasts. I know I'm thinking of getting one when it is released.

The Cooler Master NotePal U3. I'm sure you've all seen the U2, well this one has three fans which is great for the M17x vent placement since you could line them up perfectly. Three 80mm fans running at 1800RPMs max sounds pretty good to me. That is 500RPMs more then the fans in the Cryo LX, though that thing does have 120mm fans. I'm sure these would be easy enough to DIY upgrade to bigger fans though if you wanted.

The only ones I have ever seen are screen caps of video games at that resolution. But, there are a lot of superb 1080p ones out there. I had one from either national geographic or Discovery channel that was amazing. It was a huge file and it appeared sharper/cleaner than even BluRay.

I've only got the last 2 Lord of the Rings in 1080p. Wolverine as you saw was 720p, and the rest are normal quality (worse if I may say).

I've never come across 1200p videos, but I'd hate to think how big they're be. The return of the King is about 7 or 8gb. So its a proper 1080p video. Not quite Blu-Ray but close.

well there are 11% more pixels for 1920x1200 compared to 1920x1080 but you also have to keep in mind that with videos the majority of the data is actually sound data and not video (at least with HD stuff)

Indeed, 11% more rarer as well ;)

I'll make a recorded video to best get the quality differences. I don't know however if a video recording device will be able to capture the suttle differences in the 3 video categories. I'll give it a try while i write up my review for the M17x wiki.

In the meantime, enjoy this artistic picture I took before :D Here!

And then there's the green logo reflection in the silver alienware head (on off button). It's all about artistry man ;)

It's unlikely that you'll find many movies in this resolution.

    The issue isn't so much the number of pixels, it's the aspect ratio. 1920x1080 is a perfect 16:9 ratio (1920 = 120 x 16, 1080 = 120 x 9). 1920x1200 is 16:10, which isn't a ratio commonly used in films.

Most films these days are 16:9 (1.78:1), 1.85:1 or 2:1.

Just curious: why in the Australia AW customization site there is an " Intel® Core™ i7-940XM Processor (2.13GHz, 4Core/8Threads, turbo boost up to 3.33Ghz, 8M cache) [add $1,225.40 or $13/week-1]" ( converted is 1118.58 in US dollars) and in the US customization site there isn't such an option?
isn't this 'strange'? I just want to understand...

It was mentioned in other threads but i think it's important enough to mention it here as well.

    To all SSD owners
Did you know that your M17x-R2 is crippling the performance of your SSD, specifically the 4K reads and writes which probably the most important parameter?
Just for reference, my Intel X25-M 160GB 4K reads are almost twice lower than if i'd put the same drive in a M17X-R1 machine or any other for that matter.

stamatisx opened a thread on Dell forums and we need more posts to get Dell's attention.
Please, if you guys have a spare minute, post your speeds there.
