it's a replacement system for my M15x... so its fairly similar to my current system:

17 740qm
ati 5870m
8gb drr3
1200p rgb
1tb hdd
intel 6300

---> but i might just go for the gold and get a 2nd 5870m shipped when it comes in... and then an ES 920 off ebay within the next couple of months... and then a g3 when they come out

Still nto sure im going to keep it though. i have 2 weeks to decide if i want to keep it or if i want to go back to a M!5x. I kinda like the smaller size since i actually bring my laptop around... and i hardly ever game anymore.. I'll see

 

I've owned both systems and I will say without a doubt the M17x-R2 is far better than an M15x in nearly every way. The size difference isn't much rather it's the added weight (~3 lbs). But in return you get an aluminum shell, rgb led, crossfire/sli, 2 hdd bays and no throttling. Kinda hard to beat that.

I was gonna sell mine but when Dell finally grew a brain and added SLI support, I changed my mind.

When you repurchased, why didn't you go with SLI (for the support)?

The plan was/is to wait on R3 but this outlet deal was too hard to pass up. Figured I'll use this system for a few more months and then sell it at a small loss and get the R3.

Speed issue?

Hey all - I haven't done a lot of gaming on my R2 but i'm traveling right now and decided to try it

Loaded up COD MW2 and it is HORRIBLE

FPS (with Fraps) is about 45 in the lobby... when i get in game it jumps all over the place: from 20-55.

55 being when next to nothing is going on, 20 when there's some action (worst possible time of course)

What's everyone else getting? Are there some settings I should change in-game?

WOAH... its ok thats happened to me a couple times...(the multiple posts)

and my M17x should be coming in a couple hours

And this is a CF connector right? I'm thinking... since my Dell 5870m in my M15x was really supposed to be a 5850m, but dell screwed up and gave me the wrong card (awesome isn't it ) ... instead of buyin a 2nd 5870m for my M17x... i'll just order a 5850m, put it in my M15x to send back (as thats what they have it marked under my system config) and take the 5870m thats already in here and slap it in my M17x!! I'd just have to flash it a slave bios and order a CF cable form dell... should be cheaper ... right? what you guys think

 

i think that should work in theory as long as there is not difference between slave and master just bios. What about heatsink and fan need to get those from dell along with crossfire cable. How much is 5870 versus 5850m from dell and any discounts if you get a complete crossfire kit versus just a card???

So i received my M17x... and Dayumm its pretty damn big! Lol... Feels even more solid than my M15x though... still not sure what im going to do... but i am leaning towards my M17x...

Well I finally pulled the trigger and bought an R2 from the Outlet. I used a 20% off coupon I found with a quick google and got it for 1527 + tax (1909 - 20%).

I got a 720qm, 1200p, 8gb, CF 5870, 250gb drive. It was almost perfect for me since I wanted to replace the CPU and hard drives anyway, so I would have hated to "waste" paying for a better CPU and drives. I'm not sure about the red case, but I guess I'll get used to it.

I already ordered a 940xm from Shirley off ebay, dual 750gb drives, alienware backpack and IC diamond 7 compound.

(Hmmm, now which day will I be sick next week...)

Yep, that's it! Hey for half the price of a new one I can live without the RGB. 90% of the time it will be plugged into an external anyway, only when I'm on the road or vacation will I even use the internal.

That's funny because I tried to grab it when I saw it, but wanted to make sure it was what I wanted and then I went to copy the discount code and by the time I got back to put it in my cart someone had it in thier cart (you?). I patiently waited a few minutes until it showed up again and the 2nd time I grabbed it right away

 

am wondering, been a while since a new ATI Catalyst™ Display Driver been released for our cards..........they eol us ?

 

Hopefully 10.10 will include mobility for us all @ end of month.

This is beautiful, I haven't noticed any real issues with everyones systems. So I guess it's safe to say that the "All Powerful" is back in full swing

Just awaiting the new AMD 10.10 mobility drivers so we can test them out oles. CMON AMD hurry up lol.

I've been looking for one myself for a while. They don't sell it separately as it is part of a 2ndary card. You'd also need an extra fan.

Dell aren't exactly rushing to get me in the R2 owners club. Been a week since they offered me a replacement and I still haven't been contacted to discuss specs and sign off on it. The tech I was dealing with replied earlier with what effectively amounted to "wait some more".

They really do make it difficult sometimes.

 

rule#1. never wait for them to call you back. Call n Call n Call again. I've been told i wouldreceive a call back about a dozen times. not once (ok maybe once, with a lvl 3 tech support rep.) have they called me back

 

I'll give them a couple more business days before I really start to push the issue. No sense getting too aggressive just yet.

It's just seems very strange because Dell have already agreed to give a new (and obviously expensive) system out - from past experience that's usually the hard part!

 

I am new to the Alienware M17X R2 world and have a M17X R2 coming soon. It has a single 5870M video card. Where and about how much can I purchase another 5870M card to make this Cross-Fire (CF) ?

Is there a Dell part number that is the whole kit ?

What is the recommended make and model of DDR3 1333 4GB x 2 (8GB total) RAM to use ?

 

you need Dell part no RV546 Dual Ati Radeon Mobility HD 5870 (with CFX cable) which is secondary card with CF cable attached plus you need F605N - Right Fan.

I called to buy the 2ndary card since there's no way to just buy the cable and was given 4 weeks+ lead time.

 

I just did an on-line Chat with Dell Spare parts and they said the RV546 part for $ 334.99 IS in-stock ready to ship. The fan is not in stock (but you can buy the fan on eBay).

So, I am looking to at a Hybrid drive to replace my second drive on my system, any opinions on a good one....what sort of speed increase could I expect ? Think its worth it ? I currently have a 500G 7200rpm
