Debating between selling an R2 to an 18x is a "good problem." I can't afford to sell and upgrade (my wife would kill me and she allowed me to buy my dream car..dodge viper GTS). Life is good.
An R2 will play any game out relatively well UNTIL the next gen videogame systems come around in about 2 years. An m18x will run those same games even better....until the next gen consoles come out in 2 years.
Either way, each system has a realistic lifespan of two years of good gaming. I base this on the continuing trend with technology greatly being pushed AFTER consoles hit the market. PC game makers have been jumping ship to capitalize on the growing online console crowd and know they can milk (trick) gamers into buying beta games and then charging for new maps (halo/COD) shorts (fight night) etc. Consoles debut with GPU's that are pretty much on par with the best of what is out at the desktop level. So imagine what GPU is in a high end desktop in 2013 and then think if a laptop GPU from 2011 will run it? Plus most PC games need beefier gpu's just to keep up with the consoles as there is no "lowest common denominator" on consoles. Every one is optimized the same. I mean imagine running Crysis 2 on a 7800GTX (what the PS3 GPU was based on). It wouldn't look nearly as good as what they did with the console optimization.
So basically enjoy your R2 and know it will be good until new consoles come out or enjoy the m18x and enjoy that until the new consoles come out. But you WILL see significant power increased with 6970 CF over 5870 CF as the 6970 is what the 5870 SHOULD have been from day 1. IMO of course.

How much do you think I could get for my laptop if I put it on craigslist or another site like that? The laptop also has a 2 year advanced warranty.
-
^ A whole lot less than what it's really worth. Sell it on NBR Marketplace instead. I don't know of many computer enthusiasts that troll craigslist looking for their next killer system.
I have tried selling a couple of computer systems on craigslist and there was zero interest by serious buyers... a couple of inquiries from idiots that thought I would sell it for less than half the value. -

Your best gauge for value should be comparing to the Dell Outlet. Take a couple hundred off a comparable outlet system's price and you should be ok. Do not expect someone to pay you more than they would dell for a comparable machine.
-
I am always on the lookout for good deals, just sayin......
-
-
If only I could sell my M17x for 3.5k.. that would be awesome
-
Good luck with that, our machines are somewhere between worthless and cheap compared to what we paid for them, that's the way it is.

Ha...try having an R1 lol

The M18x is still a work in progress, I urge you to wait a few month and wait for the first feedbacks and the best graphic options (SLI GTX485).
That brings me to my second point: why, you of all people, would buy a slower M18x?
-
I'll only upgrade when i can't run games anymore... which im pretty sure i'll be able to run them nicely for the next 2 years at least... untill then ill be rocking my r2... which conquers anything i throw at it..
And besides... there will be some mean machines out in 2 years anyways -
Ivy's like, what, 8 months from being in the next line of Alienwares? -

We know nothing about the price...I would wait and see what it costs before making any sweeping statements. You may be surprised. The M17x R1 was very reasonably priced at release
-
USA configurator for the M18x is up, and the prices are not good. Base config is approx. 2100$ but once you start adding thing up the price jumps very high.
An upgrade to dual 6970 cards costs 900$ for example. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I sincerely hope those prices change.....that is ridiculous. The Blu Ray reader is only like $100 or $120 for other models. And the 6970m's should be about $300 cheaper...
The preliminary ship date aint bad though!
The config I was planning on is about $600-$800 more than I expected it would be....somehow Alienware made the x7200 look like a deal -
Two 2920 options? 3.5ghz and 4.0 ghz turbo options? would guess that you could OC the 3.5 to 4.0 so Im wondering if they control that through TDP or base clock. Guessing base clock to reduce heat. Gives me hope that the 2920xm is TDP unlocked though.
No 485 SLI option either. Hmm... -
No 485 SLI option... Yet.
Remember what they did with the R3, besides, the M18x without a 485 SLI won't be able to compete against a maxed out X7200, a 1 year old machine, and that spells trouble. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Even more trouble if the x7200 ends up being cheaper, which so far it will
-
As a owner of a 7200, I dont see that as trouble....just sayin

I cannot stand that keyboard at all. If it were not for that...I would want one.

I have a new monitor that I hooked up to my M17x. The screen on the monitor is never full unless I clone both displays with 1680x1050 resolution. The monitor has capabilities to go to 1920x1080. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks. -

Sup guys just wondering if our computers can do more then 1333mhz memory or can we get 1600mhz ?
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
That means R3 to you and me with a cpu of 2720 or above. R2's dont have support for ram faster than 1333mhz unfortunately. -
well i have dell stock 6gb at 1333 mhz would i benefit getting 8gb 1333ghz from kingston any? im trying to max the spec out on this and i think besides a SSD that would be all i have left
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
It (for me) was a kind of mini future investment and as the price difference between 1333 and the hyperX was so minimal, I thought what the heck....buy it....
Also, as you have an extreme cpu, you would be able to use XMP memory profiles.....only the xm 1st gen I7 can utilise XMP ram..... -
Im clueless to what XMP memory profiles are could you please elaborate?
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Extreme Memory -
well alright im looking into more about it so what about
Newegg.com - Kingston 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 Laptop Memory Model KVR1333D3S9/4G
vrs
Newegg.com - CORSAIR 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 Laptop Memory Model CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9 -
Hynix VS Elpida?
Same difference. -
-
Would these work in my M17X i know i wouldnt reach the 1600 clock speed but couldnt i use the XMP profiles to reduce the CAS lat from 9 to 7?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...yMark=False&IsFeedbackTab=true#scrollFullInfo -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
The R2 has no XMP abilities whatsoever, you will only get the SPD set speeds which will be cas 9 for 1333
-
So i should just get 2 of the ones i posted earlyer?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I would stick to non XMP unless you have an R3 or an M18x
-
So is CAS 9 the lowest i can get then if so im fine with it i just dont want to get a lower end product im in an upgrade fever and im trying to max the specs out the best i can.
-
With Ram prices the way they are these days; (4GB sodimm 1333mhz sticks). Pretty much any 8gb kit will do just fine. If you can find cheaper then even better.
The R2's Max supported RAM speed is 1333Mhz.
Cheers. -
So I have an HDMI cable plugged in to my external monitor and my m17x. Everything is working fine except there is no sound. I have speakers hooked up to the laptop so shouldn't there be something?
-
You could try:
Right-click Speaker icon in Taskbar > Playback devices > Speakers or HDMI output > Set Default > OK
Then play something. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Play something or just use the test feature, that is what I do. Good for checking surround sound as it isolates the different channels
-

Short answer, yes CAS 9 is the lowest you can get and if you want the best RAM available for your M17x buy a kit of these: G.SKILL-Products -
I have a set of this:
Newegg.com - G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Laptop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-8GBSQ
One of the chip died about a month later causing all kind of problems (i.e. BSOD, lost data, lock-ups, etc...). I tested the memory chips with Windows' built in tester and the result was good but I kept having problems. Finally I decided to test the memory chips with Memtest86 and found that one of them is bad.
Emailed G-Skill and they issued an exchange. The whole process took about 3 weeks. Got a whole new set and has been working good since. It has been 4 months.
