I do not use mine very much, but it is still in great shape. My main bag is my Mobile Edge Premium Backpack which has taken a beating over the years.....(3.5 to be exact now) but is still in pretty good shape considering that

It adds core voltage to allow a higher stable overclock - that bump in voltage is minimal and should be safe as long as you can adequately cool the chip. Overclocking the 720 requires the use of SetFSB and is not warranted by Alienware/Dell. There is a guide on the forums here that is pretty helpful in explaining how to go about this.

Hello my Alienware brothers and sisters

I am bored so I will create the future perfect m17x laptop, hopefully will be available in 20 to 60+ years. Feel free to give your opinion or create your own future perfect m17x laptop.

System color – can change any color, just like Alienware color FX

Processor – hmmm..top of the line processor XM edition (25.ghz to 35.ghz OC) normal usages 15 – 20.ghz

Operating systems – Alienware‘s Windows edition

Ram – hmm the ram sticks will be a lot smaller and more compact 50GB to 100GB (new memory technology?)

The hard drive – one yottabyte SSD LOL!!!! Or one zettabyte SSD again LOL!!!!

LCD Panel – I don’t know about the LCD panel technology in the future. I guess top of the line LCD panel.

Internal optical drive – same as above

Built-in wireless networking cards – Top of the line built-in wireless networking cards

Video Cards – AMD/ATI and Nvidia will team up exclusively just for Alienware. Check this out; the future m17x will have crossfire and sli mode. You can switch either mode and you can turnoff crossfire and sli mode. For the ultimate power you can combine crossfire mode with sli mode for ultra-gaming graphics performance!!!!

The cooling system – Will be the top of the line and be able to handle both crossfire mode and sli mode together!

And the best part is there won’t any hardware problems or software problems. Runs like a champ day one and the drivers update will be perfect because AMD and Nvidia will be on their A game…..hopefully.

The price…oh boy…. $5,000 to $10,000 dollars. Is the price too much?

    What do you guys think?

everything will be virtual by then. you may need just a projector maybe the size of your finger and a wall to show games and whatever.

they say every 6 months computer double in their capabilities. sooooo that means in 60 years there will be a laptop that's over 120 times stronger then the current top of the line. that's pretty intense if you think about it.

Michael, I don't think that article pertains to the M17x-R2. It's the R1 that has power draw limits with bios revisions after A02 for them. Our M17x-R2 is fine in that regard. However, the SSD and battery charge issues remain unresolved.

I agree, comment away. Dell needs bad PR as a wake up call although it will probably fall on deaf ears. They have their R3 coming soon and have long forgotten the R1 and soon the R2.

Interesting problem just cropped up recently (well last month or so) every now and then, my computer will "rediscover" my BT contoller, little icon will flash and will tell me its not turned on....also, its been happening with a external 1TB USB 2.0 Drive I have attached. The USB Drive is not direct to the comp, but goes through a laptop cooler, but both the cooler and the USB drive have their own power, so I dont think its a power issue...

    Any Ideas ?

Gonna partiall reply to my own post...I found out what was causing the External USB 2.0 drive to loose connection to my computer...see its plugged into a power strip under my desk...seems I kicked it unknowingle :) Yea me.

As for the BT I am still stumped

Well I finally got around to updating my system. I'm waiting for my 1TB drive to arrive, but in the mean time, I decided that I would update it with the 750GB. I removed the blu-ray burner, and installed it in an external enclosure purchased from here: USB External Enclosure For SATA Laptop DVD Drive Burner - eBay (item 110511352514 end time Nov-19-10 08:07:41 PST).

I also am going to be using a bezel from here:
Slot Loading Optical Drive Bezel Panasonic/Mata - MRC-0089 - Mac Recycling
Currently I'm waiting on a bezel exchange because they shipped me a tray load bezel.

    Here are some pics.

As you can see from the pics, the bezel sent was the wrong one. But now I have tons more storage, and the Blu-ray is still usable, though I rarely use it. From time to time I will burn a dvd or blu-ray though, so I like having it.

on the other hand, I had a junk Broadcom USB WiFiN adaptor that barely worked, so I took a hammer to it after a year aof strugle (and *after* I wired up the house with Cat6 Gige)... Only time I ever destroyed something out of anger, though I was much younger then -.-

YouTube - CES 2010: Hands-On With Transparent Display of the Future

transparent display, just about right cus if it were more transparent i couldnt see anything, would be so awesome (not a cam on the outside projecting on the inside.... would be a cool dreamscene wallpaper maybe.... lol...

plus the 3d without glasses is also available now, just not bigger than 22 inch or so (by sasmung i think), means if damn marketing wouldnt cut it all out we would have transparent-glassless 3d.... lol maybe displays you can slide out for portable eyefinity? xD also touchscreen doh, then also dual displays
YouTube - Toshiba Libretto W100 Hands On - 7" Dual Display Notebook
like this so we dont need a keyboard anymore....
    ALSO MULTI TOUCH MOUSES
YouTube - Microsoft Mouse 2.0 Multitouch (PCGH)
or maybe the xbox kinect will be put in laptops soon? its microsoft stuff afterall.... i think i just jizzed cus of my imaginary future concept, but it looks totally achievable if marketing wasnt a factor and they all teamed up for it, i mean, the tech is here right here and now but they need to suck money out of it before they wanna do anythign else.... everyone bought a 3d tv costing several grand which requires glasses, and then the glass-less 3d tech "coincidentally" pops up when most of us bought one, but still, they only sell it in japan "for testing".... derp everyone in japan already bought 3d thats why they can move on already and we just didnt buy enough according to them...

this is so awesome i can yap about this all day man xD

i think im gonna make a rendering in 3ds max like a showcase rendering as fictional promotion trailer? haha

i have two 23" touch screen monitors hooked up for eyefinity on my R2, it already feels futuristic when using both hands playing Ruse and Starcraft 2 :p

omg i just realised im this paranoia chick everybody would avoid in real life xD

lol, young looking hands lol I'm 29 :p Also, the enclosure isn't bad, maybe a little slow.

As for the wall paper, well I was doing it at my fiance's parents house. This rooms been this way for a while. Not quite my style. But hey, they watch their grand kid (not my kid :p) and it overs the wall blemishes lol. Construction in the basement isn't exactly to notch haha.

The thumbdrive, I've had for probably 4 years. It got bent in Iraq some how. I think somone moved a lapto while it was still in and bent it. Still works like a charm and that one is my Ubuntu drive for secure erases. :D But I'm definately going to be enjoying the space. and RAID 0 SSD Speed. I plan to clone the 750GB drive to a 1TB drive soon. :D

Guys, I seem to have missed the solution (if there was one, search didn't help) to the random flickering in Bad Company 2? I'm on 10.11 with 4870's.

I'm on 5870's but the only way I could get rid of it was to use the Dell drivers. But then it crashed to dekstop every once and a while so I just lived with the flickering. For me it was maybe once every hour or two of gameplay and usually during cutscenes so it wasn't a big deal.

I haven't played it much since I went to 10.12's, maybe someone else can comment if it has gone away now?

intermittent flickering is an issue with BC2. I see it on NVIDIA as well - both mobile drivers and desktop. Being we see it with both NV and AMD, I'm going to venture saying its the game :( Still love it though! BC2 FTW.

Anyone know why I can't create a shortcut to COD: Black Ops in my "Games folder"? And when I do, I can't do anything with the icon.. Can'tright click it, Can't open it, Can't delete it, nothing. Any advice on deleting it would be helpful. As it stands there are four dead links that I can't do anything with in my Games folder.

EDIT: Disreguard, I figured it out through the registry. Is there anyway to add steam games to the Windows 7 "Games" folder?

I've been running 5% overlock in BIOS, with 75mv CPU and 1.6v memory. I haven't had any issues with these settings.

Throttlestop is amazing, but it is really hard to guage where it is safe to leave it on a permenant basis. In real world use it probably doesn't make a ton of difference anyway since these are extreme CPU's. I have been all over the place with settings over the last couple of months. I did have a couple shutdowns and power brick shutoffs and I didn't know what was causing it but I suspected power shortage because of running too much TDP/TDC. I have since lowered my settings and have not had it happen at all yet (maybe 3 weeks?).

Now I do not use TS for anything except to raise the TDP/TDC settings. No clock/chipset mod, or multipliers checked for me. The extreme chip does well on it's own with no(or very rare) throttling. I have mine set for 80 TDP and 70 TDC right now.

    Hey DR650SE...

How's that external case working for the optical? Do you need the second power cable or is the 1 USB cable enough?

Also, which caddy for the HDD are you using? The newmodeus one?

I've decided to pull the trigger on this one - since Dell will be coming to tear my lappy apart, I might as well drop this in when they do.... :)

Actually the external is working out well. It only uses a single USB cable. I'm still waiting on the slot load bezel, so I'm using a faceless drive at the moment.

To answer your other question, I am using the Newmodus optical drive conversion. The one I'm using is for the 1TB 12.5mm drives. At the moment I'm using a 750GB drive, but will be cloning that over to a 1TB drive soon. It's working well because I don't use the drive much, so now I can have SSD RAID 0 speed and space, as well as my storage drive. I also don't move my M17x much, so if I decided to watch a blu-ray, I can still do so. Hope this helps.

    cool. single cable is good.

i'm actually going to end up with 3 separate drives: OS, data & backups. this way, i drop the esata enclosure - one less thing to lug around...

the only thing that concerns me is heat buildup from the drive, 5400 rpm will help a bit and it looks like my choices are a Sammy and a WD.

how's the heat difference on the palm rest feel to you?

    I have a quick question

I currently purchased a new bluetooth mouse for my new R2 but found an interesting problem.

The problem that I am having is once I connect the bluetooth mouse it works fine with the trackpad after I turned off the feature where the trackpad is disabled when you use an external mouse that isnt my problem. What is bugging me is that when the computer locks back to the login screen I cant use the trackpad to move the pointer the only way that I can move the pointer is by using the bluetooth mouse it is like this even if the bluetooth mouse was turned off before the computer locked I still get the same result.

Is there a way that I can keep the trackpad active when the computer locks and not have to be depended on the bluetooth mouse to unlock it.

    Any suggestions on that.

    TIA

    My recommendation:

Learn to embrace the tab key ;)

You should always know how to use a computer without a mouse

Yeah, that's something that drives me crazy. I can remember the computer world before the mouse became popular. The mouse was cool for a few years as an interface tool but watching people compute these days is just insane for someone who "grew up" at the commandline.

I do computer consulting and see this all the time with different people...

E.g... press C-A-D, move the right hand to the mouse and use it to click in the login box, move the hand off the mouse and type in a login name, move the hand off the keyboard to the mouse and mouse to the password box and click, move the hands back to the keyboard and type in a password, move the hand off the keyboard and click the OK button.

    OOOOHHHHH MMMMYYY GGGAAAWWWDDDD..........

    My M17x drives me crazy because they took the "RClick" key off the keyboard. And the "Insert" key... {facepalm}

    A Logitech® Cordless Desktop® MX™ 5500 Revolution
Im not using the logitech software with it I just paired using the Windows 7 Add a bluetooth device

Yeah Ive tried tab b4 but it will not select the user tho sometimes the facial recognition will work but thats not always guaranteed. Alt-Tab does work but Im just curious to know why this is behaving like this.

Honestly, I havn't noticed any differance in heat from the extra drive. Heat shouldn't be an issue.

Wait just a side question, is that the old MX or the new one?
I have the new MX and it comes with Logitechs little unifying dongle which stick out about half an inch from the usb port.
Is this the mouse were both talking about?
    Performance Mouse MX?

What do I need to do to have the Crossfire emblem displayed when a game opens when Crossfire is used in a game?

Also, has anyone had issues where thier crossfire seems to just automatically disable? Some how this is happening to me from time to time.
