Yup. The GPU fan will spin at 4700RPM, stock CPU is 5300 IIRC and the 2.3CFM one is 4700. I'd really recommend switches though, that way you can still have them run on auto most of the time.

Ugh, I wish Dell would have done that. Clevo has got it down: FN+1 to max the fans, no weird restrictions on how fast they can spin, they actually turn on before 80C and they give you software to customize your fan table if you want.

it wish they would have given us full fan control and if we get our hands on the tools then we can make our own signed BIOS.

EDIT: it would be nice if there was a way to macro the fan speeds to keys :p

Which wire did you cut? I'd like to try this one out since I have the 11.7 and 10.4CFM fans :)

It is either the blue wire or the black wire with a white dot on it.

My [email protected] idle at 37-40 degrees. Light Usage 40 - 45 degrees. I always use maximum performance in Windows power plan. Thanks to Liquid ultra :D. The same can also 4910MQ + Oc with Liquid ultra. Remember to have Liquid ultra ready for the new processor :p.

also, I just checked to see if the stock cooler fans are doing any difference and looks like it really isn't. i took the bottom cover off and just sat it on the cooler and i could barely feel anything come through the stand into the mesh of the cover. having the laptop's fans at full blast is working better.

this might warrant a cooler pad mod!

I got the 980m running in Win8.1 pure UEFI, however I'm still throttling. Using dedicated mode and 344.75, I get 4.2k 3dMark11. :( However, when I run SC2 it is working fine between 88-110fps in ultra. Should I try Win7 optimus mode?

Are you running the stock vBIOS? If you are try flashing Prema's modded vBIOS.

I'm running SVL vbios at the moment. No signs of throttling though, when running 3dmark11 clocks are at 1205/2505. I'll try Prema's mod this Tuesday.

    Thanks! :)

i think you can push the OC a bit more...maybe to 1260/2800 (or 5600 effective).

anyway, i should be getting my wattage monitor this week so i will see how much juice my AW17 is pulling.

I just got my wattage monitor and here are my results with the specs below in my sig:

    idle = 50W
    Mad Max (60fps), Batman Arkham Knight (30fps), MGSV (60fps) = 130W - 150W
    Mad Max (120fps) = 220W
    Project Cars (120fps) = 180W
    Witcher 3 (30fps) = 170W
    Witcher 3 (60fps) = 180W
    Witcher 3 (uncapped) = 190 - 200W
    Heaven Benchmark (60fps) = 200W
    Firestrike = 200W - 220W
    GTAV (30fps) = 140W - 150W

so with my config with a mild to decent OC there is nothing that's even reaching the full 240W. i could keep testing though i think it means that a 330W PSU won't be of any help unless i beefed up the CPU, added more RAM and storage probably. but so far it ain't doing JACK!

Test with 3Dmark11, 3DMark Sky Diver and/or 3DMark vantage. These tests push the hardware a lot more than the puny 3DMark Fire Strike :D.

tried it: the gap is much wider - 170W to 220W

still haven't broken the 240W barrier though really it's good that it doesn't cos most averages between 150W and 160W.

Test max wattage in a Wprime 1024 (8 tread) bench .. It is your processor that keeps the wattage down in games and bench. http://www.putme.net/wPrime155.zip

That's good, the overclocked 980M isn't taking up too much juice! My system in comparison consumes generally 140 - 160W while gaming (peak 180W), so with your specs it's really not sucking that much more juice - quite efficient!

Hey guys, I am very new to the forum and am having a small, troubling issue with my AW17. The machine is charging up to 46 percent and then stops charging. It reads "plugged in, not charging" I have so far done an ACPI Control Reset as well as a discharge of the motherboard. I have also flashed a14 to the BIOS several times and replaced the adapter with another genuine adapter of the same wattage (180W). I have run AIDA 64 as well as EPSA and Dell Diagnostics. All show every component working normally. I can see the current from the power adapter dropping to 0W when it hits 46 percent with small amounts of current after that to keep it at that battery level. Do I need a new battery? I have also done a full battery drain. Thanks in advance guys.

Can you check whether you have desktop charging mode enabled? Right click on the battery icon and you'll see Desktop mode battery charge. Click on that and you can set it up (and charge your battery to 100% once if you like). It's a way to protect your battery if you keep it plugged in for a long time.

I have enabled and disabled desktop mode, I have run it with just the power adapter and it was fine. The battery is showing that it is perfectly fine but it's not charging past 46%

I was also benchmarking it using the Dell Support Assist and the Nvidia 770 is doing perfectly fine even with the battery in. I'm still getting 200+ fps and played titanfall earlier with 100+

Don't have my Alienware 17 anymore so I can't check how this functions. Is it a BIOS option or strictly software only? From what I remember the software is pretty wonky and might need to be reinstalled. If it is software only maybe @Ezaldean can boot into safe mode and see if it charges?

Dell calibration seems a bit different from the regular drop-to-zero-and-recharge:
    1. deplete battery to 40 percent of capacity
    2. remove battery and let it cool off for a few hours
    3. re-insert battery and charge to full without powering on
Not sure if that would do it, but the issue is a calibration or other battery problem, at any rate. You could also check this with multimeter; outermost pins of the battery are voltage and ground. Fully charged that should measure at least 14.8V*(4.1/3.7)=16.4V (or a little over). If reports that then it's fully charged, regardless of whatever a software thingy may claim.

The temperature is determined by the maximum wattage. + Good cooling. Higher wattage the higher the temperature. What matters is whether you are lucky in the silicone lottery. Lower voltage on processor = lower temp = OC :p.
