Okay I finally bought a 970M for my 17 R1 (R5)
Could someone clarify if I am wrong :
I have 60hz with optimus always on it should work on both win8and 7 ? Using UEFI
I have to modify the driver every time
Should I expect throttling issues the card is flashed with SlV7
I have 180 w adapter I hope its enough power -

I think all your assumptions are correct given what I've read, but you shouldn't get throttling with svl7 vBIOS, and 180W might not be enough if you heavily overclock 970M, especially if you're overclocking your CPU. You can always use a Watt Meter plugged in at the electrical outlet to measure power draw, and if it's not enough buy a 240W or 330W. -

If only I had one ( watt meter) anyway i will keep looking for the Adapter .... will post here when i install my new card -
Yes you should be fine... You won't have throttling as long as you stay in Optimus mode... As for 180W PSU, I'd get 240 personally as if you OC the 970M, 180W PSU won't keep up

Thanks man i will keep looking for one hopefully i can get one below 50$ mark -
It means that when NVidia release a new driver, we have to modify it before installing?
-
He has to because the 970M is not standard equipment in the R1.. You don't because the 860M is
-
HaloTechnology Notebook Consultant
since you have the 970M how is it ? I have 765M and tomorrow going to install 970M ?
overall do you think its worth it ? -
Lol it should be worth even more for you Halo
-
I know I've asked this before but I'll ask again, in case something's changed.
Any IPS panels come out recently compatible with the R1? -
So i have to modify drivers when i planning to upgrade 970m maybe next year?
-
Yes ...
-
Well say pretty please and J95 will mod them for you.. He does so over at techinferno so make an account on the forum there and start making 5 quality posts and you can download quite a bit of stuff from there...Flaick likes this.
-
Ok thanks, now it's clear. I was wrong supposing i've nothing to do (about drivers) when i will upgrade to 970m. If i don't use modded drivers, the card will not work?
And if i put a 880m? I have to do nothing? I presume not, cause it's from the same series of mine GPU (860m).Last edited: Apr 14, 2015 -
No driver won't install.. Modding the driver is just adding one line of code about your GPU hardware ID to the inf.. Just Google NVIDIA inf mod..
880M will work but it's a bad choice.. 970M gives better performance for cheaper..Flaick likes this. -
I wouldn't put a 880M in there either. If you don't want to spend too much money, look for a used 780M or R9 M290X.
-
Thanks all. Last question: with 970m i need 240W PSU? Or my 180W it's enough?
-
The 180w should be enough if you don't O/C. It is enough on the R2.Flaick likes this.
-
I sold you a 240W so you'll be fine.. 180W is pushing it slightly in the R1..Flaick likes this.
-
I'm having trouble getting my R9 M290X to run Unigine Valley. Catalyst Control Centre doesn't recognize the program, since it launches using a bat file instead of a exe. As such, I can't set switchable graphics to high performance.
Update: fixed.Last edited: Apr 14, 2015 -

TomJGX You are awesome I would love if you would help me
Dude i installed the 970M today but god damn i am getting throttled all the time
the driver seems the problem , do you have any recommendaton ? I have a 60 Hz with optimus ON ? Memery is always locked on 1500Mhz ? what should i do >? -
What PSU are you using?

I have 180W

It should be borderline fine for a non OCed 970 & 4700MQ. I don't think you are throttling due to power consumption.Last edited: Apr 20, 2015 -

Question, would my AW 17 support a 980M ok? I have the i7 4700MQ and GTX 770M. My power aapter model is:ADP-240AB D I'm Assuming a 240W?
-
You'll want a 3-pipe heat sink, pretty sure the 770M is a "thick" dual-pipe. If you have the 60Hz screen, it should work. I'd order it from HIDEvolution. They'll send you a kit and it has a one year warranty.

Yeah I have the 60Hz screen, OK, cool. So other than the heatpipe and stuff (which can be bought as a kit on HIDEvolution) I'm good to go though. PSU is good and such? -
240W PSU is needed. Yours looks like it is 240W.

Guys I bought a 240w Adapter for my new 970M card and its fake not OEM , I bought from ebay and flextronics is the label .
My Q is did anyone had any trouble with adapters before ? Dell sells them for a whooping 140 $
http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=331-9053
Any help greatly appreciate it . -
What did you pay for this on Ebay?

Is your power supply Extra Slim (thinner than usual?)? Can you measure the thickness of the power supply? I have 2 pieces originally shipped from Dell with my AW17. (Labeled are: Flextronics) thickness is 26mm ...Last edited: Apr 22, 2015 -

You could do some testing on the new adapter to see if it performs OK. To put maximum load on the adapter I would do the following:
1) Buy KillaWatt meter for measuring Watts consumed from electrical outlet.
2) Run down battery to low (say 20%).
3) Plug in AC adapter (through the KillaWatt meter so you can measure Watts being used).
4) While battery is charging (which can use in the region of 90W just for the charging process itself) run a CPU and GPU demanding game while at the same time overclocking your GPU & CPU if possible.
This would be worse case load scenario and will push you very close or over the 240W limit. If the adapter performs fine without getting really really hot & without any sudden shutdowns or other problems then you've got an adapter that works well. (How long it will last is another question, but at least it would be working for now!)TomJGX likes this. -
If anyone is interested FirePro M6100 is working in m17 R1 and m17x R4, Windows 8.1 detected card as Radeon 8950M and downloaded drivers. I did not have time to test if all video outputs or fantables work or play with inf file to get card recognized as FirePro.
It was tested on machine that came with GeForce 765M and we reused its cooler. We needed longer screws and different thermal pad placement and that was it.

Update for the Adapter :
the first one I bought from ebay was Chinese knock off I returned and bought a used Delta adapter .
what's interesting though that they both wight the same only around 1 oz difference . the knock off was really good but still a knock off and I will not trusted running my newly upgraded AW17 R5 with 970M
Be careful when you buy a new PSUAshtrix likes this. -
is it ok to grab a 970m for an alienware 17 now?
-
I guess it's fine, iirc about the AW throttling fix with j95 driver mod+Prema Mod vBIOS v1.1 / full UEFI NVFlash for 120Hz machines too..

Hi,
I need your help and information from first hand.
I wanted to ask about the warranty for the following items:
1. wiped palmrest from the wrists.
2. battery consumption 13% - battery age about 6 months. Normal using by desktop mode of power plan.
3. free fall of cover from a height of about 7 cm - cover to palmrest.
Is it a normal situation or damage of palmrest, battery and hinge?
The end of warranty Oct. 22, 2015.

It's pretty easy, you should have a spare tray in the empty drive bay with screws for the new drive. All the ports in the AW17 R1 are SATA 3 (HDD1, HDD2, mSATA, DVD).Santander likes this. -
Hey there) Could anyone please dump a stock vbios for Alienware 17 2013 GTX880M 8Gb through GPU-Z or send me a link on the forum where i can find one.
Much appreciated -
Tnx a lot, +rep)
-
i just ordered a 330 watt PSU so hoping that might help things along.

thinking of dropping from 4 x 4gb sticks to 2 x 8gb sticks so i don't have to deal with the sticks underneath the keyboard.
-
It takes 15 minutes of work to get to the sticks underneath the keyboard.
-
but there's 22 screws!
thinking of getting 2 x 8gb sticks and probably go with 24gb of ram....total overkill but meh! -
At least this is more than what is in the the new Aw 15 and 17R2
TomJGX and MahmoudDewy like this. -
I wonder how the slots are organized for dual channel to come into effect? Can I put both 8gb sticks on one side or does one need to be underneath the keyboard? So can it be 8+8 and 4+4 or 8+4 and 8+4?
-
Now that I have 24gb of ram I have no idea what to do with the stock 8gb now.
-
Sell or maybe give away to some buddies that need more memory. You have a luxury problem
