It indeed seems that "iamsolidstate" has solved his Achilles heel for the 330w ID mod.
    nice....

Now i hope that there is a work around for the SLI certificate problem....

didn't they fix that for the 580m? I wasn't really involved though so I'm not sure. :(

Has anyone gotten BF4 to run smooth on 7970m? Some people got very good FPS in the beta like 40-50fps on ultra/hbao/no aa, but i get like 20-25fps and i got the same specs.

I have a stock 7970M that cannot be OV'd and yet the game run mighty fine. I can use the ultra preset in multiplayer!

What CPU? I haven't tried all ultra yet, just high/ultra mixed, no AO and no AA. (Trying to hold 85fps smoothness)

That's pretty sweet. Do you have a thread explaining the mod and showing some photos, or did you have someone build it for you? That should be a really nice performer now that you can run it full blast. So glad you got this sorted.

    Thank You Mr. Fox

The guide itself is posted on T|I forums by @Nospheatu ( look at the NBR @Nosphearatu sig as well )

I do not know why he did not post it on NBR, well, i'll ask him to do some Copy/Pase Action :D

I have done it my self, it was not so difficult but very, very time consuming :)

I found it... sweet mod. Really like the dongle with ID chip approach. Same principle should work for the M17xR3/R4 owners, too.

Just ran some new tests after repasting.
    Stock system I am getting

    Icestorm - 79967
    Cloudgate - 15939
    Firestrike - 4002

Fans barely even kick on and I never hit past 66c on the gpu and 69c on the cpu. Averaged around 55c for them.

    I love new paste :)

From this i can see my 4 year old 920XM is almost keeping up with 4700MQ 8500 VS 9100, mine has to be really heavy overclocked though.

Looking pretty good there Brother fligin.

What's the deal with "SLI certification" all about? Is that something with the M17xR2 BIOS or something with the 780M vBIOS?

Gosh... I just LOVE winter. It's about 28°F (-2°C) so I just went out on the patio for a little help from mother nature this evening. Highest GPU temp was 68°C.

Very nice scores. :) Thoose 780's rock :)

I also have the advantage of cold weather if i need to, but havent done it yet.
When i run my bench i cant seem to get my 7970's's working higher than 62Deg. They do not need to go outside, it is as if speeds fall a bit when they run much colder outside.
If i try to OC or OV the cards more than i do i get shut down during bench.

My CPU goes fantastic on 27X and 75mV, but have to increase to 150 mV to go higher. This one has to go outside in very cold weather to be done or I end up temp throttling. Did one test with this, with apx same CPU results as the 27 due to this throttling.
Since the GPU's seems to slow down in the very cold i dont expect bench results to be much better, and has found that i dont want to hazzle my CPU just to do it. :) I allready have one 940XM that has been getting hit by what appears to be killed memory handling due to very often very high temperature running. Since my 920OXM OEM is extremely speed friendly i dont want it abused the same way. :)

    Hi All,

Just got my laptop not long ago. Please let me know if my stress test scores are acceptable.

    Alieneware 17, 4700mq, GTX 765m, 8gb RAM, 750gb HDD 7200rpm, 1600x1900 native screen.

    PCMark 7 score: 3141
    3DMark 11 Score: P4191
    3DMark 2013 score: 2526

    Average temp for CPU: 73
    Average temp for GPU: 67

    1) I feel that my PCMark score is a little low? I've heard that a lousy HDD seriously cripples the score, but from your experience, is that an acceptable score?

    2) During the 3DMark 11 & 2013 tests, the Final combined test/Fire Strike combined test component yielded dismal results.

    Thanks in advance !

    Nice score! Great job!

What was tweaked that makes that driver better? Quadro driver supports SLI? I'll give a go and see how it fares.

OK, here are the results with 3DMark11. This my preferred benchmark since it is CPU heavy. Fire Strike gives comparatively little weight to CPU performance, so it does not reflect overall system performance as well as 3DMark11.

While it did not improve the benchmark score, it also did nothing to adversely affect it. As you can see, the graphics score on both systems remained identical between both drivers.

What is more remarkable is the difference between the M18xR2 and the Alienware 18. They are running the same vBIOS, both at 4.3GHz, stock GPU clocks; yet the M18xR2 performs better in Physics and Graphics performance.

I don't have the AW17, using an MSI GE60 but it uses 4700MQ and 765M so maybe you can get some idea from the individual scores.

    With integrated 4600
    PassMark Software - Display Baseline ID# 146020

    With 765M
    PassMark Software - Display Baseline ID# 146027

If you think benches are lacking in the AW section you should try the MSI GE section, it's very lonely there when looking at performance. :(

I'm not much of a gamer so the GPU is stock but the CPU is run a little higher than standard. Hope it helps.

Don't need to worry about Physics score that much with Fire Strike. The majority of the weight is placed on the GPU. In fact, I lowered my CPU overclock from 4.5GHz to 4.3GHz, got a lower Physics score but an overall higher score... so figure that one out. I don't have a whole lot of confidence in Fire Strike being a good measurement of overall system performance. On top of minimizing CPU performance it favors Windows 8. With exactly the same CPU and GPU overclock I was scoring in the 6300-6450 range. Rebooted to Windows 8, set the clocks and BOOM, extra 400-500 3DMarks for Windows 8 with a lower Physics score, LOL. The exact opposite is true with 3DMark11.

As another example, look back a page or two at Brother fligins score with 920X and it has a low Physics score but a really great overall score with his M17xR2.

No on the voltage. It seemed about the same both ways. I actually completed some runs at 1225MHz on core, but the scores were lower. Your driver tweak did not hurt anything at all, but it did not change as much for me as it appears to have done for you. It's still stable so I will leave it installed.

No, 1175MHz (shows as 1177 in GPU-Z). It is stable enough, but the score actually goes down a little bit at 1225, even with max voltage. CPU and GPU both stayed under 90°C but it still might have had a throttle at such high clocks. This was not run on AC... just sitting in my lap on my recliner, LOL.

Ok, I got my new Alienware 17 with the AMD Radeon R9 M290X with 4GB GDDR5 GPU. Here are the "out of the box" benchmarks before I did any tweaking. Links are to pictures posted on my facebook page with general public permissions. I love the way GPUZ reports my BIOS version. I'm using the Dell supplied driver for the video card btw.

Also love the amount of memory your card seem to have according to GPUZ.

Well, we use it to render life size, 3d representations of actual life itself. :D

Oh and the newest, just released version of GPUZ reports things correctly (Version 7.7 I think?)
