Hey guys, i received my replacement today, sad still have some small deal pixels, but not big one, so i am fine. My old one is 4G RAM dual channel and can always get 7.4 from WIN7 rating, while my new one is 6G RAM at least shows dual channel in many testing softwares. but besides the first run hit 7.4, after i did fresh WIN7 install, i can only achieve 7.3 all the time. any idea on how to check my RAM works fine? i'm not care about the score itself, just want to make sure those RAMs works fine. Thanks guys.

Hi all, I've recently joined the club, and very happy with my beast so far :)

Only issue I'm concerned about is the flex in the keyboard around WASD and arrow keys so they keyboard feels spongy, I was expecting better. Is this normal/acceptable, or should I be getting Dell to fix it?

You can fix the keyboard flex yourself by removing it and either slightly bending the keyboard in that area or just placing something underneath it so it wont bow when your press down..

Well I finally got my M17x today from my office. It was my first day back to work since I returned from leave. Right now it's sitting on a desk charging. I only unboxed it, powered it on to make sure the proper components were installed. As of right now I'm still too exhausted from my trip to think about messing with the system. Maybe tommorrow I'll dissasemble it and get to work on it and some benching, but gotta rest before I dig into it. Things go bad when I'm tired. I do love how bright the RGB screen is though.

Fridays agenda is to install the dual X-25M SSDs, 8GB 1333MHz, a 920CPU or 940CPU,not sure which yet, probably bench both, ( not sure if it's even worth benching the 920 or if I have the motivation) repaste CPU/GPU with IC Diamond, new thermal pads, tweak OS, and maybe some benching. Glad to get it, but to tired to celebrate.

Sidenote :( They blocked NBR forum from my work. Now I feel useless during the day. :( lol

Just curious, but is the M17xR2 in your signature the one you are describing you're going to build, or will this build be your 2nd M17xR2 and the one in your sig you've already had for a while? Nice systems, either way. :D

It's the one in my sig. I ordered two months ago, and then went on leave back home. was gone almost 3.5 weeks and my system was delivered the day after I left. So now it's time to get cracking. :D The components I have, have been sitting under my bed for months now.

Very true. I guess i'll be starting with the lowly i5 :p

What new beta driver are you referring to?

A06 is just out, and is just as good as A05 with just a couple of supposedly fixed issues. There is a separate thread discussing A06, and so far, no problems.

    that's the way to think!!
if you look now, i started with the i3 then started benching an i5 and next up, an i7-620.
keep screen shots and upload all 3d benches for verification.

Ah, I thought that driver was only for R2. I checked the dell site and they seem to only have A04 for R1.

I was talking about the driver discussed here:

well, I cheated a little. Amazon will let you place out of stock item's on 'order' until (or if) they come back in stock. FFXIV though.. I'm supposed to get that release day ;) Now all I need to do is hope some drivers will be out that actually let me play it...

I had a targus chill hub XC, but returned it today, something about 2" of overhang got on my nerves :/

    It is for desk use.

Just got my new pcb's today and the build quality on them is much better than the old boards I had - that is cool. Also, and more importantly, no 12V adapter is needed folks! I measured the output with a multimeter, the fans are getting 12V from the 5V DC adapter! There is a transformer stepping up the voltage. It is only 5V so that it can also act as a power source for the USB hub to make it powered. That is why the current on the adapter is rated at 2 amps

    Hello guys,

Can I hook up a 30" DELL 3008wpf at max resolution 2560 x 1600 with my alienware M17x? If yes what cable do I need: display port,DVI-D Dual Link to HDMI?

    Thanks!

DisplayPort is your only option, as HDMI does not handle the 2560x1600 resolution.

HDMI can handle it, just not the version we have in our laptops. To make sure I do not confuse, yes, displayport is your only option for that resolution

I could not find that the 3008wfp even supports HDMI 1.3...regardless of what is in our laptop, I don't see that the monitor is capable of it.

    Anyone know for sure??

Also, I read that with the introduction of ATI 5000 series cards, that ATI implemented HDMI 1.3. Does that mean those of us with 5870's have HDMI 1.3 (in which case, can output 2560x1600 on the M17x)???

I have a question Im trying to determine if my new M17x is indeed a R2 and not a R1 and im not really sure how to do it right now.

The reason im asking is because I received my current Alienware as a replacement for another M17x which was replacing a M1730. The first replacement was a lemon, so after over 20 blue screens and various other problems Dell said they would send me a R2 model. But when I was just about to update the BIOS I see I can only update to the A05 Bios not the A07. And also I do not have the ATI cards but the Nvidia ones So do I have a R1 and not a R2.

If you need anymore info let me know

    TIA

Your CPU determines whether you have an R1 or an R2.

If you have a Core2Duo then you have an R1. If you have a Core i-series (i5/i7) then you have an R2.

I believe the R2 will take either video card, although I think it is only sold from Dell with the ATI now.

If you have NVIDIA cards it is an R1. AO5 is also the most current BIOS for the R1

Thats another thing I wanted to ask, im still new to Alienware so if I understood correctly that when you swtich over to battery it uses the Geforce 9400 right improving the battery life?

Well I noticed that on the old replacment when I used battery I could get at least 4 hrs out of it but on this one when I take out the AC adapter I only get about 2 hrs. I didnt change any settings on the last one so is there anything I need to do differently on this one to improve the battery life?

    Sorry about all the questions.

Sorry for all the questions again scook9, so that will make the 9400m run all the time or just on battery?

And last thing and I wont bug you anymore but I really do appreciate your help

When I plug a HDMI into the computer i notice that in order for audio to pass thru it you have to go into Playback device then disable the speakers for it to work. Or is there another way?

I have always had to force audio over hdmi. I don't think it will switch automatically

And changing that setting in the BIOS will be al the time until you change it again regardless power source.
