I just got the Turtle Beach X12 head set for my system. These things are amazing. So glad I didnt get the TactX headset from Alienware now. They were cheaper by like $20 too. After a BB certificate I only paid $37. lol

for you guys who using 6990m on the R3.....

which GPU driver version that you're using now ? It's been a while since I update my AMD driver (12.2 preview driver). Just think that I need to update it. Any idea which driver should I use ? Most people say the latest 12.7 driver only for the system that using 7970m GPU card, no use to update to that version. Read a couple of posting say that 12.3 is tho most stabilized for 6990m, but when I try to download it from AMD support, it says that it not compatible with switchable graphic enable system. So just wanted for your opinion....

This is a followup to an older problem I am still having with my Alienware M17xR3 notebook.

My WiFi and Wired Ethernet connection still tends to occasionally do extreme network chattering which in turn lags the subnet or router greatly to the point that I need to keep rebooting my m17xr3. At times I don't experience this network chattering glitch for a long time, and then it suddenly comes back to haunt me. Some have told me it may be the network card that could be glitchy, or viruses/spyware..

I did scans for viruses and spyware and couldn't find anything. I also didn't really install any extra bloatware over the stock/default alienware build that came shipped with this system. So I'm at wits end here. None of my other computers in my household exhibit this symptom ever in all my years of computer experiences.

I'm not too sure what else to do other than phone alienware to get them to possibly replace parts, but I'd rather like to further diagnose the issue if anyone has ideas.
Is there any 3rd party network monitor apps with logging I can install to track when these peak chattering events happen? To further narrow down what apps/processes could be pinging the hell out of the network?

    Thanks for any help.

    - Chris

My mom bought me a backpack but there is one problem. The m17x does not fit in the laptop spot even though the backpack says it fits 17 inch laptops. So I need to return that one and order a new one. Any recommendations? I need to get it ordered asap.

I hope someone replies soon because i want to buy them tomorrow.I know from the manual that the laptop supports 32gb @ 1333 but i'm interested in 1600mhz.Thx.

Hardware support is definitely there. I believe you need Windows 7 Pro or higher. Windows 7 Home Premium and lower versions may not use the 32GB of memory.

I ran into some problems with the 12.7 beta driver (namely in Skyrim), so I reverted back to the Dell driver. I'm not sure what Catalyst version it equates to, but the driver version is 8.973. The 12.6 release notes on the AMD site says that the driver version is 8.98.

So I guess what I'm saying, even though I have a 7970 and not a 6990, is I would suggest the 12.6 WHQL from the AMD site.

I like it but I don't like that it has no side pouch for a water bottle. Which is why I think I am going to end up passing on it. But thank you for the suggestion.

This is what I have now which just needed to be a little bit wider. Amazon.com: PEGASUS from SwissGear by Wenger Computer Backpack: Electronics I've been looking around today and I think I'm gonna go for this. Amazon.com: Ibex 17 Inch Notebook Backpack: Electronics It is a couple inches wider.

There is a pouch that zips out for bottles. It will fit a 0.5L water bottle.

I have a question? :) Is there like a specified volume limit on the Alienware M17x R4? I just don't want to bust my speakers anymore. I only put my volume limit up to 80. What's yours guys? :)

That's about where I keep it, too. Honestly, I don't feel like even at 100% that it's that loud. At least not loud enough to damage anything.

I only keep mine at about 25-30% for things like web browsing and general apps and find it more than loud enough. Sometimes for games I may get up between 40-50%. Maybe I have bionic hearing. LOL

I always wear headphones, so I use them for the volume control and crank up the laptop output to full. Pretty decent sound for a laptop.

I purchased a Swiss Gear backpack from Best Buy. It's black and blue and has a million compartments. It also has two drink holders on the sides. Very durable. Mine is a daily use bag and I've had it for 2 years. They still sell it in store if toy want to try it on for size.

I also have a Swissgear backpack. It is a little snug for a 17" on the corners, but it has tons of compartments so I can carry all my laptop accessories as well as a couple shirts, socks and underwear when going somewhere for the weekend.

I can confirm that 3D movies can be played on an M17x-R4 7970m ouputted to a 3D TV. However, I need to put some time into it as it doesn't look as good as when I play the content on the PS3. My tv is an LG5600.

Hello guys, I just bought a Jawbone Big Jambox for my music needs. Originally, I bought it for my phone but I would like to use it on my Alienware M17x as it supports Bluetooth. Unfortunately though, the one where I got my Alienware M17x from (BTOtech) does not give out bluetooth cards if you order their Killer Wi-Fi (It's weird because when you order the ordinary wireless cards, bluetooth is included, but when you upgrade to their killer wi-fi, the bluetooth won't be included anymore.) I'm thinking if I can just buy myself a Bluetooth USB 2.0 Dongle and put it in the eSATA port. IF that happens, will I be able to use my Big Jambox then? :) Thanks!

Is USB audio limited to any degree? I got the Diablo version of the Steelseries v2 and even though they are super loud, it seem like sometimes if the sounds are highs then lows come in it isnt as loud. Not sure how to really explain it or anything. Ill be keeping these as they are comfortable and sound almost as good as the Turtle beach ones I had. Just wondering about the volume and what not

Hi, after I placed my order, I realized I might have forgotten to customize the Nameplate.

    In the cart, it showed
    "330-6106 Personalized Nameplate Trigger"

Does that show for every order, or does it mean that I did customize it?

Thanks for the information! It helps put my mind to ease a little, but I'd like to have solid confirmation.

I'm really looking for someone who didn't customize their nameplate and also didn't see the Personalized Nameplate Trigger appear.

You can always call and ask them about it too to make sure the order was correct. They should be able to tell you what is there and there would be a better confirmation and in less time.

Hey guys, I recently got my R4 and everything been good so far but for some reason I'm hearing some strange sound coming from DvD/Blue ray player, it doesn't happen a lot but enough that it catches my attention, is this normal?
the sound is sort of like if it was loading a disc.

Mine does the same - random drive noises with nothing in the drive. Not even using it when it occurs.

My R3 did not do it but I've seen a couple of others asking about it so I guess it's some strange hardware thing on this model

Does it usually occur when you go to "Computer" or access your folders on the hard drive? I know mine queues up to see if a disk is present sometimes of I'm messing around in my files.

Mine does it randomly, after i log on or after i finish a game.
Weird thing is that my friend also has an AW R4 but without the blue ray drive and I've never heard his machine make the sound, so since i ordered mine with the blue ray i thought it was because of that.

I'm getting one with a blue ray drive Monday. I'll let you know if mine does it as well. It's probably just something with the drivers causing it to check the disk status when certain things occur on the computer.

Cool! :) Might have just been a random glitch. In any case, take the time to update your wifi drivers as I did. The one provided by Dell are NOT the latest. Look up the Intel website for your networks card (assuming ofcourse yours is an Intel).

I tried to update my WiFi drivers from Intel to no avail. I downloaded the 2.2 version and installed but after it said it was done I still had the old ones.

What all drivers are we allowed to update from the manufacturer of the device? I know the Nvidia drivers don't work if they come from Nvidia.

    Hi everyone!

I just received my brand new R4 this week with a 3610qm, 7970m gpu, 8gb of ram and the raid0 2x500gb.

Everything seems good, but I have a small problem with one of the game that I'm playing that I don't have with my other computers. I have a weird ~800 millisecond load lag during the spell effect of every of my spells in Darkfall Online. I've ran Process Monitor, and I find out that the process WMIADAP.EXE is the one causing the problem, as it is running for ~750 milliseconds of the ~800 milliseconds lag. Anyone know what is WMIADAP.EXE, and why is it slowing me down like that? Is it possible to fix it?

    Thanks!

wmiadap.exe is a process which forms a part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System. The AutoDiscovery/AutoPurge ( ADAP) process transfers performance libraries to the WMI repository.

This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated

    Source: wmiadap.exe - What is wmiadap.exe?

Yes I saw that, but for some reason it is loaded several time during that load lag that I got, and it creates a lag of 750 milliseconds that makes the game unplayable :( I wonder why is this process called and what it really does...

    Hi everyone!

I purchased a 2nd m17x r3. After messing up the overclock settings in bios, I have to remove the cmos battery. The system runs fine now.
However, I noted that the Windows 7 starts up much slowlier than before. I have tried removing unnecessary startup programs but no good.
The system used to finish all startup programs and ready for use in 14s. Now it takes nearly 1 minute. :((
I install windows on a 60GB SSD. Intel Storage driver shows that the SSD is running in SATA III already.
Anyone knows how to fix the issue?

    Thanks!

Just got my new m17x r4 today and I am certainly pleased to be a new alienware owner. Took forever to get everything setup on my SSD, and still have yet to get all of my games downloaded and installed, but I did manage to test it out on Star craft 2 (not the most demanding ever but still a nice test on extreme graphics) and it was flawless {yay for run-on sentences ;) }. Hoping to have enough time to see how well this thing can process some large 3D building models tomorrow. See you guys around :) .

Oh yeah, has anyone tried to plug a HDMI cord from the out port to the in port? Lol

Not really related to anything, but do you guys get paranoid or worry when downloading freeware? Went to download K-lite codecs and their download site just wanted you to install tons of crap. Luckily c-net had it crap free. Still bothering me after scanning for anything malicious and showing clean though.
