I bought a 3d sony tv a while back and got some official sony 3d glasses off ebay for like £30 and they work fine to. The price is about £80 for them from a main retailer. Complete rip off, would get that new toshiba which doesnt require 3d glasses but at £7000 its quite expensive. Toshiba 55ZL2 glasses-free 3D TV review - TV - Trusted Reviews
I thought it was a gimmick and would die out pretty quick but i find its very effective actually and great to show off to everyone![]()

You're very welcome! Glad it worked out for you. I'm always a bit cautious with recommending any audio/visual add-ons but quick to applaud anything that works for me
Thanks, I had seen them cheaper but when I bought the TV it didn't come with any (more of a component system) so I just went with the supplier
.
That TV looks very interesting. Way beyond my 'impulse purchasing' power but I'd like to see it

No haggling at all! Right off the website and I found a $50 off coupon code as well. The total before tax was actually like $1775 in change
Deff got the 1080 screen and the 7970. Can't wait to get my hands on it

If you have a R4 and you never update the Command Center then you probably will have no problem. However, for people with R3 or older and they have updated their Command Center to the newest update, the Respawn still retain the older Command Center that was shipped to them when they first bought it. The conflict of reverting to an older firmware will potentially damage the AlienFX. I may be wrong though.
The point here is always use the newest program from Dell for the Command Center, whether you are using Respawn or a clean install. -
Nice! Once again, you are awesome
I will be shopping around for the Nvidia 3dtv goggles soon, hehehe.... I will however, try the 3d (since you said it is the same), on the big screen and see how that pans out. I know most poeple don't like this but..... in 3d, you said, lights out, headset, and 3d glasses. Does that yield better results? Because most people get headaches after 15-20 minutes of gaming lol.
holy crap! 7k's A LOT! My aunt is waiting for those tv's to be released too, she said she's gonna wait it out a bit longer....
BTW, with the Nintendo 3DS's technology (I assume that's what we are running off of), 3d play is just ALRIGHT, I see better coming from the glasees, but that's just me
Very much agreed, with the exception of some things
In our XPS 17 thread, 50-60% of us have complained about heating issues after upgrading Bios from A17 to A18 (latest). Dell, has doubtingly responded..... In actuality, my laptop had overheating issues, causing the laptop to malfunction after the upgrade, reverting back yielded no better results. Hence why I received the Alienware

Thanks! I like it better that way but mainly because of the super shiny display panel. Reflections are a distraction. On the TV there is a background shimmering that I can get used to but that goes away in the dark.
I'd say that 15 to 20 mins is probably about as much as I felt comfortable with the two-color glasses. On the internal display with the NV glasses I find that I can 'feel it' after a couple of hours. I often go 2d to avoid pushing it as a headache will be the result for me
.
I haven't extensively 3d gamed on the TV yet, waiting till I get my force-feedback wheel for the full driving fun
-
LOL..... I have one of those wheels! The only way it is fun is if you have REAL simulation driving (like Gran Turismo and whatnot). Anything outside of that, you'll start to notice how crazy you are with the xbox 360 controller (or in your case, the keypads LOL).
I will test out the games externally on the TV tomorrow or the next to see how everything looks..... Sounds soo exciting, as it'll be my first experience with 3d gaming
-
hi,
Is there a power adapter that will work with M17R3 that won't blow the fuse in an airplane
. The oem power supply shuts itself down..
thanks -
Once you get everything set up right, 3D gaming is a sweet option. I thought I would have a harder time going from playing in 3D on my 92" projection screen to playing on my laptop but the full 1080p resolution and sitting closer to the screen is making it all work nicely. I am on vacation for three weeks at my in-law's place and love having my setup in my room for some late night gaming
-
I believe there is a controller on the motherboard in charge of lighting. When you update the Command Center, it actually flashes the controller with new firmware. So when you install an older Command center, it causes conflict because of the new firmware on the controller. I'm not saying you should always use all firmware update on Dell. But you need to know this because flashing BIOS firmware and installing Command center is two different thing. You will need to install Command center every time you respawn or do a clean install. And you must do it if you want the lighting. Hence the need to use the newest firmware for Command Center. For the BIOS, you can choose to update or stay at stock. It does not matter.

Thanks man. I have a whole collection of driving sims (all 4 DiRT's, GT, Grid, F1-2010) that I can't play for toffee on the KB or the 360 controller. Only NFS The Run, which does not work in 3d
, is any good for me. I had the G27 when I was living in the States but 'gifted' it to a friend when I returned to the UK last year. I loved the force feedback, adding a level of realism like the fact I could feel the tyres breaking away and get on the opposite lock before actually seeing the car start to spin
(on-car bumper view which is better IMO with a wheel and 3d, top-down is too arcade for me!). Along with the way that I prefer to be in control of gear changes.
FYI anyone thinking of a wheel the G27 worked out-of-the-box on my PS3 as well - bonus!
Look forward to your results/opinion
...

That is how I understand it to work, had some fun with it on my R3 after a clean install. The latest version also needed M$ Visual C++ updates after a clean win install. -
I have and use a driving force GT which is a good wheel, no clutch though which is why i may upgrade to a g27 etc But yeah adding a decent wheel brings another level of immersion to driving games. Using it with shift 2 is quite impressive.
Hi btw gok, i said i'll come to visit you over here

Sorry to ask such a stupid n00b question but:
Can I use my M17x R3 directly into the mains minus the battery?
Reason is, I dont use it for any mobile usage, and at the back of my mind I feel like I'm damaging the battery with the charger always in... is this true?
Cheers lads, sorry for the n00b!! -
You can use the laptop on AC power with the battery removed, yes.
-
sweet! Thanks, if I leave the battery in with the mains in permanently am I damaging the battery?
Thanks! -
You can turn off the battery when it reaches 100% charge, press [Fn]+[F2], that way you won't have that feeling at the back of your mind telling you you're killing your battery
Alienware Laptops: Battery FAQ's -
The laptop should be able to draw power directly from the brick instead of going through the battery. So I don't think it will damage your battery. And the battery is going to wear out anyway, whether you use it or not. It's just the way it is, just don't quote me on this =P.
-
Ideally you should cycle (and by that I mean complete discharge followed by complete recharge) your battery once in 20 days so as to keep it running at optimal conditions (for a usual 8-9 cell battery). You can monitor various battery stats including degradation % using Everest.
EDIT: 4500. -
sweet cheers guys!

Try lower wattage power supply's.... Is there a forewarning on the airplane's outlet plug? how many amps can be drawn maximum? or how many watts? Amps being drawn is your wattage multiplied by your voltage, that's how you find how many amps your power supply draws for the laptop. Using a lower wattage power supply will hinder performance, but still keeps your laptop usable (for movies, and light gaming, and etc). Once again, you won't get amazing results in gaming with a lower wattage power supply, as your alienware detects this for good reasoning
VERY nice! and GOOD gaming! ehehehe.... I was hoping to us ethis later on combined with an xbox 360 for some light gaming when i'm on vacay later on... didn't know these came with HDMI IN!! I was stoked when i saw 2 HDMI ports lol...
Gotcha... I think the R4 laptop (at least MY r4 laptop) came with the downgraded firmware, so it looks like I won't be reverting back anytime soon *yikes*!
nice nice! I dont have room in my room for a steering wheel, mine's was given to me too, with a gearbox+clutch too, it's sitting in storage right now as I dont use it
... I awas given the steering wheel and was told it was $100-200 so I neve rthrew it aaway lol.
On another note, I still haven't gotten around to trying 3d yet... I've been busying researching and figuring out how to setup windows 2008 server r2 for a small business.... I had no idea how weird the configurations would be
i know, lol.... you need to get an alienware and JOIN THE RANKS!
You wont damage your laptop's battery, with today's technology, laptops are too advanced to OVERCHARGE.... but if it's in the back of your mind, it is. Just disable battery charging and you should be good to go
I Vouch for OC.net, i've never used steam's forum.... but OC.net is AWESOME!
-
Im will actually be installing windows server 2008 into a VM soon as i need to do some labbing etc for my microsoft cert, so if i need any help i'll come to you! Or the other way round if i get it working first lol
I wont say never but i cant afford one yet from the money im pouring into my desktop. Want to get two 4gb 680's in sli sometime in the future
Oc.net is awesome and they have many forums regarding any hardware relating to pc. Steam's forums are awesome to though
-
LOL, most likely it will be you, so far I have given up, am gonna run WAMP server for my web hosting, still figuring out how to setup an email system, and I will be using the good old "map network drive" methods that you can use under any regular windows distro. I've watched the video tutorials and am just absolutely LOST! LOL..... You will definitely have to teach me networking and server building! My uncle so far has already put a core i5 on order, will consider that corsair cooler for cooling. Going to run just 1 i5 CPU and maybe 4-8GB Ram tops, as the server is for a small business for now.
Talking to a few friends here and there, some people forget how simplistic a server can be used, especially for small scale businesses.... -
Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
Hi Luis, I was pleased to see this, then I read:
"Note: Enable/disable battery option is not available for the M14x R2, M17x R4 and M18x R2."
Do you know why these models are excluded? Thanks. -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Exactly what I was thinking after I read that bit (to find out why I got a pop-up but no action)
-
That's because those models automatically disable battery charge when it reaches 100% charge
-
Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
Outstanding, there couldn't be a better answer! +rep -
That's freaking awesome!
Nice to hear that!

I know MBP will completely discharge when battery is at 100%. I thought they have implemented that technology a long time ago...

Which is the fastest SSD out there at the moment guys?

i think that the new samsung 840 pro 256/512 gb are the fastest one out there...

hey all installed my 680M graphics card into mt R3 and now have this issue:
I've connected my Laptop to a monitor via the VGA out. When I restart my PC it forgets how I had my display last time meaning I've always got to select display extend. Next thing - when I start certain games, they always default to playing on my lappy screen rather then the monitor, no idea why...?
I think this might be to do with the new bios I've installed - but any help on this matters would be appreciated! -
Question, how strong or durable would you say the 3.5mm jacks (headphones and stuff) are?
When I'm using headphones, the wire will get caught on me or something and puts a perpendicular pull on the jack.
Ikd, it seems like the end of it would break off in the jack before the jack itself would break.
Just has me paranoid and such.
Sent from my SGH-T999 -
I don't think this has anything to do with the Bios revision, as what you're speaking of seems related to OS-preferences.
Have you tried a full "Shut Down" after setting preferences? That might help remedy the problem
I've never left a screen in long enough to find out whether or not it saves upon reboot.... sorry
Pretty sure it is more durable than the 3.5mm jack, but JUST IN CASE, I'd say you should order a 90 degree angle 3.5mm jack extension, as it's easier to have a $0.90 piece of hardware rather than spend maybe $50.00+ to replace that 3.5mm jack (it's what I charge customers at my shop, it also varients on whether or not the part is easily attainable or not too). -
I was just thinking about something like. Do you have any recommendations? Having a hard time finding something on the web.
Side question, how do you repair the jack? Doesn't look at easy.
Sent from my SGH-T999 -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
I'd go with this. Better safe than sorry.
I have seen a couple of people with issues with the switching between internal/external as well as the SP/DIF getting 'stuck' when used frequently, so probably not the best quality components. MB replacement under warranty, although I would think anyone handy with a soldering iron could replace one.
-
I bought a mini display out today and connected my monitor via DVI, no image nothing, any ideas why?
-
bah thats alright, just using HDMI -> DVI which is fine, though I cant seem to select 60hz, only 59hz... Anyone know why?
Sorry about the barrage of q's! -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
I'm wondering if there is a problem with the 'detect' signal on your monitor. Would account for why sometimes output switches to your panel even though you have selected external
I see that sometimes and just guess it's a slight mismatch in the signals... -
Nothing too major then? games will still play fine then?
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Nah, you'd never notice it. The Hz list in the display driver is taken from a list that the monitor 'says' it supports. In other places you might see the actual Hz the display is synced at - 1hz is close enough
-
Just got Borderlands 2 for my M17x, and it's so so good. Shame I didn't play the first one. I was looking for a game like this since forever! I loved the concept of Diablo but hated then point and click. So I wanted FPS style, and this thing popped out. WOW! I can't stop playing!
-
Sure thing, I just did an ebay look for "90 degree 3.5mm" or "right angle 3.5mm." Both came out with $2-3 products, doesn't matter which you pick, as it's just a right angle 3.5mm jack.
3.5mm right angle | eBay
3.5mm Audio Right Angle 90 degree Adapter Connector | eBay
3.5mm 1/8 stereo Audio Right Angle 90° 90 degree angled jack converter Adapter | eBay
I just did a quick search for replacement 3.5mm ports for the alienware? No luck, not even dell. So try your best not to break it, or repairs will REALLY cost you
You can still attempt to repair what was broken if you simply broke the solder points of at the bottom, but most cases people break the whole 3.5mm port. To fix this problem, you literally have to run some extra solder underneath, to each solder point, and find a way to angle your soldering device (there's different verisons) so that you get all the solder points at once, and pull out, after that.... You would suck up all the leftover solder on the board and install new part.
It's a lot harder than it sounds lol..... I just gave you layman's version of how to fix the port.
Ouch Micky! That sounds painful lol... I know of iPhone users who use their phone as media players, yanking on the 3.5mm jack too much and pushing it back and forth until the port lost connectivity because the contact points INSIDE the port (the part that contacts with your 3.5mm jack/headphones) broke off inside.
Borderlands 1 is fun too, my favorite was the berserker, you power him up and he just goes melee crazy (while HP/shield recharges).
You've been missing out so i've seen, the combination of borderlands 1 guns (and maybe borderlands 2 guns too, i haven't gone that far), would equal out to a few thousand different possibilities! LOL -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Ahh, of course, the joys of surface mounted components. I was thinking of the old-school where a de-soldering vacuum would get it out - never tried this on a surface mounted component.
I would think there are 'generic' sockets with the same mounting points since it's a ubiquitous part but never looked into it
-
Thanks. I already ordered some. The ones I got where 70 cents off of My Cable Mart, so I wonder if there is any difference compared to the $2-3 dollar ones. Probably not though, but I guess I'll find soon enough.
Kinda wish I would of thought of this earlier.
