Yeah, you'll need to look fr the full screen assembly, and they are not easy to find. Dell screwed up and sent me a replacement that had the 1600x900 screen, and a technician had to come out and install the 3D 1080p screen. Basically you remove the whole screen off the hinge, remove the black back panel and swap out the entire rest of it.

Yeah, I've found several full assemblies, I think that may be the route that I go. I'm assuming it's going to be night and day. I'm still undecided, but I'm leaning heavily towards 1080P screen and small SSD at the moment.

I was looking at the Canadian and USA alienware pages and can't seem to find the m17xr3 with the lower res. screen as an option now (I do still see it on the UK web site)... and no price increase even for base unit with the 1080p screen. Wonder if this is a welcome change that will last.

At least base unit on Canadian site is same price as the 900p screen option, when it was available. Not sure if USA is more now since I don't frequent it as often.

Anyways might be a change to a better monitor at a price reduction :)

I love how demanding people sound when online.

If you're unsure about an update, you can easily learn about them by going to the Microsoft website and do a search for the update by the update number, starts with KB. Or you can even do a search on google using the update number.

They are optional updates, so it's you're call to use them. You're best bet is to learn what the update is for before updating, especially if you're not sure what it's for.

Don't be mad breh its cool. WEI is brilliant. :D

About the 50% 560M Vs 6990, if you read my post, you will get something from it called sarcasm. I know it can be lost in translation, but its there. if you think my posts are retarded or boring, uninteresting you can simply not reply to them or put me on ignore.

is the 15k the GPU score or total score, that's still pretty beastly. wish i could have talked them into giving me that =)

No registry changes needed. WEI scores are derived from data files located at c:\Windows\Performance\Winsat\DataStore. Open the most recent XML file "[date]. . . Formal.Assessment (Recent).Winsat" and manually edit the scores as desired and save. WordPad will do it.

I ordered my Alienware M17x r3 with the following build setup:
    ----------------------------------------
Casing color: Alienware M17x Soft-Touch Stealth Black

    CPU: Intel® Core™ i7 2760QM Quad-core processor (2.4GHz, 3.5GHz with Turbo Boost, 6MB Cache)

    RAM: 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz (4DIMMS)

    GPU: 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6990M

    SSD: 512GB Solid State Drive

    Display: 17.3-inch WideFHD1920 x 1080 60Hz WLED

    PSU: Alienware M17x 240W A/C Adapter

    AlienFX: Mars Red

OS: Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English

Optical Drive: 8X Slot-Load Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+-RW, CD-RW)

Sound: Internal High-Definition 5.1 Surround Sound Audio

    WLAN/WiFi: Intel® Advanced N + WiMAX 6250 a/g/n 2x2 MIMO Technology

    Accessory: Alienware TacX Mouse

One question I have is; do the newer m17x r3 models no longer have Wireless HD or WiHD? The sales rep in online chat told me that it doesn't have that feature. Was he maybe mistaking?

Or is the Wireless HD feature really only in older models from last year? I was kind of looking forward to having the ability to wirelessly stream HD content to my TV.
At any rate, I am going completely crazy waiting another 2 weeks before my m17x r3 will arrive with Purolator.. Thats too long!! >_<
They are sending me my Alienware TacX Mouse ahead of time tho as a separate shipment. @_@

Ordered my R3 yesterday, just one question regarding hard drives:

Are the parts for installing a second hard drive included if the machine is only ordered with one hard drive?

That's about the stock run total score with a fast CPU and stock 6990m. The GPU score is lower than that from what i recall...maybe slightly less than 14k but i can't remember 100%

First off, congratz on the new laptop, it is about as good as it gets for laptops in this class

The mini PCI-e slot is still there on the motherboard but i heard they ran out of stock of the wireless HD cards so they aren't currently offerring it

Yes, as Long said, all hardware is included for the second drive. If you get a SSD, just get the basic 2.5", 9.5mm thick drive.

Thanks for the confirmation. I plan to move the Momentus XT that's currently in my M17 to the M17x, make it the boot drive, with the 750GB drive that comes with the system to be used as extra storage for movies, music, etc.

Don't want to drop the money for an SSD just yet, I have too many games to fit on anything short of a 500GB SSD and I'm too lazy to move games back and forth :(

It wont take too long moving to SSD, especially if you use steam. But yeah I'm kind of lazy too and try my best to avoid doing it.

At stock settings, a 6990M would typically return a Vantage GPU score of about 13,500, with an overall score near 14,850. Newer drivers may increase the score(s) somewhat; my 6990M has been retired, so I can't test.

    Hey guys,

Check out what I got for $1700! eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

I am excited to get an Alienware. I owned a M11x for a little while, but it was too small for long typing sessions.

I do hope that there isn't anything wrong with the computer or it isn't a scam, because damn it's a good deal. A similarly speced new laptop costs $3099+Tax, but with the economy down I could understand why it is going for so much less than a new one.

Scam or legit? I'd like to hear you opinions. Ready go.

    Nice find!!

However I'm a bit concerned about the Neutral feedback that the seller received regarding the same laptop (I think) and the seller backing out due to the selling price not being high enough.

I really hope that doesn't happen to you, let us know how it goes!

Congrats by the way...don't let my skeptism take away your excitement.

Could be legit. I've seen stuff like this before where people get replacements and free upgrades waaaay better than what they originally paid for. They in turn, sell it and make some money off of it.

Just make sure the Service Tag is good when you get it. If they got it as a replacement and didn't send the old one back, it could be bad news.

    that's a decent price considering it comes with 2 x 256 SSD's

but don't let the $3k price tag fool you. Dell charges ridiculous amounts for harddrive upgrades and ram upgrades. These are things that you can easily do yourself for a fraction of the cost. No one should spend $3k on a m17x...you would move up to a m18x with dual vid cards

your AS benchmark numbers are very very weird. Your writes are waaaaay too low and a 2853mb sequential read?? that's impossible

can you do one more bench? Run a crystaldiskmark?

Sure Slick, let me download the software and give it a go.....

it just happen for the last 2 days, back then the score is around 440. Still too low for SATA 3 speed..... maybe because the Dell technician who install it put the SSD on port 0, and in RAID mode also.....

I'll post it as soon as I can before I try to do a system restore to earlier time before the problem occurs and see what happen.....

Thanks Long. I'm using HDMI+VGA. I was a bit skeptical about using a digital and analog output but there's really no difference in quality, especially once both monitors have been calibrated to the same settings.

Resolution is 1920x1080 on each screen...I've tried battlefield 3 and it's absolutely wonderful :D

Hey I've been lurking on this site for the past month, since I started looking for an alienware m17x, but never got around to making an account and posting.

I had been wanting to wait for the m17x r4, but on the outlet i found a deal on the outlet store that i think is good, but i want your opinion on it. here are the specs

Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit Operating System DVD
    Alienware M17x R3 Laptop
    Processor: Intel Core i7-2760QM Processor (2.4 GHz,w/Turbo Boost,6MB Cache)
    8 GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz, (4x2GB)
256 GB Dell Mobility Solid State Hard Drive, 1.7MM
6X Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)
    2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M
    Intel 6250 Wireless-N (2x2) Half Mini-Card
    17.3 inch Wide FHD (1920 x 1080 60Hz) WLED Display
    Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
    Soft Touch Stealth Black

All of this will cost me $1899, before taxes.

    I was wondering if either

    A: I should buy it
    B: If i should wait for the m17x r4 with the 7970
C: Wait to see if m17x r3 prices drop significantly (in the outlet) a month or 2 following the release of the m17x r4

Thanks in advance for any replies i get.

EDIT: I do plan on installing Bigfoot Killer Wireless, and a 750gb HDD at home, if i decide to buy the one im looking at in the outlet currently

I bought one from the outlet today and almost bought the one you are considering...I've been tracking these for awhile and have learned if you wait on an item in the outlet it will be gone in the blink of an eye.

Build it through the regular site and you will see that the computer you are looking at is a whole lot more on the regular site!

Unless you called a rep about this, i think this may have been a different one, as this was not on the website. I specifically wanted it because it had a SSD.

I know it is a alot more expensive, however, i am wondering if it would be better to wait it out for the r4 to come. While i may not (and probably wont) get this specific system, i am wondering if the prices will fall with the new m17x. I have time to wait (need one at the latest by late August), though the sooner the better, just because i really want one :p.

So I guess my question is, how much do you expect prices to fall when the m17x r4 comes out?

Does anyone know if the screen from a M17x R1 (pre-dell) is compatible with the R3? I'm talking the entire assembly, lid, screen, bezel.

Based on the outlet prices on the R2's no. I imagine that places like ebay you will see them going for less but the out I would say no.

It won't, the area-51 m17x's screen is 16:10, the M17x R3's is 16:9, also the attachments are different.

But of course they did, nice looking and powerful systems too.

Thanks Katalin. That stinks. I may buy it anyway and experiment with it, lol. Do you happen to know how close in size they are? If I could get the screen and plexiglass off of the assembly and find a way to modify my lid... I'm going to blow my money most likely... but I like experiments if they're "close"

Are the connectors to the mobo the same I'm assuming? Not the hinges, but the actual LCD connector?

Yes, that sometimes works. Unfortunately, it can just as easily go the other way. It really depends on your rep. You got a pretty hefty discount, so I wouldn't worry about it. That thing is gonna be a BEAST!

My only advice is to install some more memory later on. You can snag some DDR3 sticks off newegg for cheap.

I am not sure how dell is doing the math, but that doesn't seem like that great price to me. Seems more on the average end at best.

    Figure
    1500 base
    300 GPU
    300 CPu
    150 1080p
    150 Bluray
=2400+tax and warranty. Hdds are cheap so I'm not counting those.

Does this not add up to anyone else?

I don't agree with trying to get "free" stuff just because you want it. If you want a TactX mouse, just buy it.

Now if there are some mishaps with your order. Constant delays, not getting the right info from your rep, or even being lied to by your rep. Receiving your order with bad parts or wrong parts. Then you should be entitled to some compensation. Depending on how you purchased, you're compensation wont be the same as others.

I wish people would get out of the mindset that they are "entitled" to free stuff because they spend X amount of money. You spend X amount of money on what you purchased. Before you make a purchase, if you don't like what you're getting, or you want something else, then work towards getting what you want.

I was completely satisfied with what I purchased and how much I had spent on it. When delays started to affect my order, I then called and spoke with my rep numerous times. Eventually his manager said that I would receive some form of compensation. It eventually came down to just being a $75 e-gift certificate to the dell store. I only got $75 because I was told that was the max I could get because of the price I payed and how I ordered (through the aafes website for military). He could have been lying to me and I could have gotten more, but I'm not one that is going to try to squeeze every last drop from them just because my order was delayed a couple weeks. I eventually used the gift card on a TactX headset and the Razer Kabuto mousepad/screen cloth. That seemed like a fair enough deal for me.

    Just my 2 cents.....

i don't know where the $3000 price comes from. I can go to dell.com and configure your computer for $2549. Looks like they jacked up the price, then showed you what looks like a huge discount on paper just so you think you got a great deal.

So you paid $2389 which is about a 7% discount. So you're getting slightly better than website pricing, but the discount isn't great. I got 13% going through a reseller. I would have got more, but they couldn't go any lower because of the creditcard charge. Resellers have a 20% discount from dell, so they can give you a big discount without even blinking

and i'm with Skylinelvr. My thought process...you are going to spend $2K on a computer and you're worried about a $35 mouse? If i were you, i'd work on the discount first.

Just to throw my 2 cents in, the laptop found in my sig cost me 1690 shipped (minus the ram, and SSD). I bought it new

So I don't know how good a deal $2400 is for that configuration
