The Dell Ireland site (with 3 yrs cc - we don't get 4) lists this spec at the equivalent of $4509. I may have been born in the wrong country.

my total was $2400 (after taxes) with next day shipping, same specs as you but with the 2720 processor. I've already got my 8GB RAM ready to install over here at home, as well as my SSD and HDD combo. Did not get free anything or even free NBD shipping. But do have an early shipping date.

So, I was told (repeatedly) by Dell reps that my credit card would not actually be charged when I placed my order for my new r3 but would only be "authorized" for the amount of purchase. The reps told me my card wouldn't be charged until my laptop has shipped.

I woke up today, checked my account and saw they charged my card. Giddy with excitement I checked the status of my order expecting to find a "Shipped" status with a tracking number, but alas it is still in production.

    Question: Why did Dell lie?

About the same ballpark as mine. Our prices are a tad higher in Canada but I have the 256 ssd, intel 6300 card and am just under 3k with 2 yrs advanced.

Often Dell puts a hold to verify the funds and may charge (then 'un'charge the card with the final charge coming at point of shipping. They didn't lie, they just protected their business.

Being born in Ireland has its perks: irish women! beer, etc. You should just make friends with an american who doesn't mind making the shipment for you!

Where the heck are all the reviews for the r3? Doesn't Dell have enough brains to at least ship one out for a fast review online..... Soooo many people are waiting to see the Dam thing in action before they buy .

I more then likely will get one of these. My new job with the local government will help me get a sizable discount and the optimus( although I do not like Nvidia) will ultimately force me to succumb.

I need the battery life and the enjoyment, I recently purchased a new house and i no longer have Cable/DSL so I need a computer for local gaming and this seems to fit the bill. Sure I could get cheaper but I like staying with what I know.

I really hate to get the 3d screen but I figure I may as well get it so that I can have something to toy with.

I just really wish we could get a ATI solution for onboard GPU function ....Bahh.

An indication of the difficulty in attaining an R3 discount on the European side of Dell sales (not that I was pushing hard, but still... )

Dell: Have you customised it already online?

Me: Yes... what I sent you is the 'detail view' of the 'My Basket' page

Dell: Yes indeed. Well the Alienware are the premium range machines that Dell manufacture and they are sold at the same price at which they are manufactured. I can complete the order here on this chat and create a Dell account for you.

Me: Are you saying that ordering through yourself offers no financial advantage over doing so online?

Dell: There is no additional discount at all on the Alienware be it online or not :(. As it is nearing weekend and it is over €2500 I can confirm the successful completion of the order while you stay connected on this chat itself. Usually the payment is blocked by the bank in case of a huge order value while keeps the order on hold. So if you wish I can complete it here and if there is any such hold from your bank I can let you know that now

Me: I appreciate the offer, but I think that I'll consider my options for a bit. Many thanks for your time and help though.

    Dell: Sure not a problem

Me: By the way, if any discounts become available in the very near future, please email me

Dell: There would be none on Alienware

Me: Has there been any word on the inclusion of the NVidea GTX 485M graphics card on the M17X R3 (note to NBR: had to ask!)

Dell: As of now there is no information on that

After 3 pointless conversations with Manila and somewhere in India, ordered the 3D discounted bundle with only free NBD shipping then read about Optimus not being supported there. Canceled and reordered with US rep with non-3D. Managed 10% off and free 3 day shipping. Follow up call from Dell about canceled order gave me updated EBD from 11th to 9th and free NBD.

    Challenge accepted.

I got a discount on the M11X through the chat. I'm sure you could get one for m17x too. I do agree that it may be harder though.

    @ Killer Juice
well, you gotta be the lucky one. if only i can think of ways you got discount, there are a lot of promos going on right now on m11x. from personal experience i tried very hard @ chat with 5 different reps (and different rep. departments) it just doesnt work. however, once i called, i only had to say "D..." i got 15 bucks off. i mean there's difference. and the guy also told me that sales reps can have internal promotions attached to the order, above that only order mod. dep. has enough rights to change your order sum, thats all I 've been told. once again, not my words, but my practical experience. no insults in here i hope.

So if I ordered the 3D bundle, i wouldn't get 6 hours battery life? If I couldn't get 6 hours battery life, then I would want to cancel the order. I don't need 3D, I just interested in the bundled deal. Damn

Why dont you wait and see how the battery life is? I think its next to impossible to guage exactly what type of battery life without anyone here having the system in hand or a complete review of the system by NBR or another site.

    Just a thought.

x2. We have a lot of people asking questions and nobody has the answers yet as nobody here has actually ever touched one.

I have been writing down a lot of my own personal questions and questions others have had and will do a large post once people start actually getting their M17x's.

I hope one of the first owners is willing to answer all the major questions we/I have!

Well the first hour will be startup and alien respawn creation, then lighting config, the the ohh ahhh period, then some portal, then 3d portal, then maybe NBR questions and answers. That's assuming the bloody thing every changes out of InProduction!!

    @keith2100
if wanna know my personal opinion, i tend to think that there's switch between 3D display mode and usual @120hz mode, that said, once u enable 3D display mod, you automatically trigger discrete GPU to run on, meaning optimus turns off and battery goes down faster. makes sense to me.

well. the one that makes sense at least :D well lets see. as of my call today i must receive the laptop in around 20 days or earlier. actually there are people who'll get it before me, so, i dont think we gotta overthink this. its pretty straight forward in my opinion. also i think they give out huge discount on 3d bundle to get people to use the thing. to popularize it. if optimus contradicts with it, there's a biiig CON against buying it, so, no logic in that for me.

    Hey batboy,

how about an official, questions to be answered once someone gets there actual hands on a R3 thread? this can be a collection of questions that we all have, and the first of use to receive it, if they are willing, can do their best to answer. Im EDD of 2/8, i ordered on the 14th. so i probally wont be the one doing the review, unless they release us all out of production at the same time (which is a strong possibility).

I think its a good idea to create a question/answer thread but only after the answers have been figured out. Otherwise it will just turn into a mirror of this thread.

Yep - we can certainly do that (a FAQ thread). Like I mentioned in post#1 :

One thing I do want to stay away from would be 20+ threads on "Hey! Check it out! I unboxed my R3 and here it is!". The first person receiving their system is more than welcome to post pictures, etc. Others can then use the same thread to post their unboxing pics, videos, etc. Doing so will help to keep the 17x sub-forum organzied. Last thing we want is a bunch of threads only on the 17xR3. ;)

We have a 17x Benchmarking thread in place and we will not be creating a new one just for the R3 - sorry guys.

Question add: Are the lighting/LED's arranged the same as the m17x r3 or are the similar to the m11x (m11x only had glowing white around head on lid)... Some question along those lines.

Any light leakage from the black bezel?

Touch pad larger in size? ( from pictures it looks like it is)

Is hardware easily accseable for self upgrades through panels?

    How heavy is it?

want to know about ghosting/crosstalk with the M17X in 3D mode. Will suggest setting up a separate 3d gaming with M17X thread to discuss which games work well and how to tweak brightness/gamma to acheive best results.

One of the questions on the above compiled list (thank you, Astrogiblet - very good idea) asks, "How is the trackpad? Is multitouch smooth in terms of scrolling or does it feel choppy/inconsistent and poorly executed?"

Has it been confirmed that the trackpad is multitouch capable?

I suppose that one would assume this, with this class/cost of machine, but I don't think the R2 had multi-touch (could be wrong), and I've seen no mention of it in R3 stats or discussions

Please add the all-important about whether Optimus is supported on the 3D model. And also, a follow up question regarding battery life with igp vs. discrete on/off, and when 3D is on/off.

    Thanks!

What's this talk about the lack of optimus with a 3d display? I know there is some language to that effect in the manual, but the general consensus was that it meant you probably couldn't have 3d on AND optimus at the same time.

Has there been any new information in this regard?

Edit: dookie beat me to it!

I think I got the gist of what you were asking. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, I'm not sure how the 3D works, but is it a matter of turning it on and off? I thought you only see things in 3D when your watching a 3D movie or playing a game that supports it.. Or is it 3D the entire time? Like you can browse the web in 3D?

I don't know much about the 3D also. I've always assumed that you turn it on (either with a switch, or an icon you click on or something) when you need it/want it for whatever you're doing. I think what jaaz meant was that if you can have 3D on via Optimus (optimus = auto-switching technology, right)?

My concern is whether or not the r3 will have Optimus (gpu switching capability) AT ALL in the 3D version, cuz I want the Intel HD 3000 when I don't need superpowergpu during grad school.

Also, can you provide a link to the questions in your signature?
