y'all know what, these people in dell gotta make us consumers really angry with the way they behave... i need better graphs!!! still, yea, a good idea is to get it reconfigured if not shipped yet, though, i also will have to wait for at least a week since my classes begin to get the laptop.uuuhhh i smell some money loss

p.s. can any1 explain in couple words how does the process of 21-day return basis work?

    Buy laptop
    Laptop is shipped
Any time during next 21 days you can call Dell and tell them you want to return your purchase, no reason is required (though they always ask for one).
(At this point, they may offer you money or credit if you agree to keep the system)
Dell sends/emails you a shipping slip, or sets up a pickup at your location (shipping is covered by Dell).

Original method of payment is credited within "7 to 10 days" (legally up to 30 days I believe) of them receiving your system.

There is no restocking fee on returns within 21 day period.

Yeah, this looks like a good upgrade to the M15x. If the M15x was more portable I may not have done it. There are enough upgraded pieces to make this worthwhile.

Well i have just joined the ranks of m17x r3 owners in wait. my system will ship on 2/4/11 (or sooner, the guy said there is fluf built in). Let me just say to the guy who recomended calling insted of placing the online order....YOU ARE RIGHT!...
ONE THING EVERYONE SHOULD BE AWARE OF: if you get the 4 or 6gb memory option the motherboard has only 2 memory slot (max 8gb ram). if you get the 8gb upgrade the motherboard will have 4 slots. I dont know why they are doing this but they are.....

i worked the poor sales guy to death. this is what i got that was NOT on the web site:
    1. extra 250 discount (although if you look REALLY hard on the site, suposedly you can find it)
    2. extra 50 off on top of that.
    3. 75 knocked off the backpack.
    4. next day shipping

i ended up paying $2050 (usd) for the following:

No disrespect.... but I really have to ask...why are people investing all this money in a wonderful display with 1920x1080p 120hz and not getting the 3D Bluray Player?

Its like buying a lambo, or other exotic car $$$$$$ and putting on cheap plastic hub caps, poor tires, and bad gas...

P.S. I think its best to say it now while you guys are still ordering and possibly are able to change your orders ASAP, if you want to of course. Just my 2 cents. ;) Everyone should spec their system to their needs. Nuff said.

Review the terms of sale on your region's dell.com site. There are links on the bottom of the main page of dell.com. All the terms are there. Feel free to discuss here (which is the better choice of thread for this type of question):

Does the 3D source have to come from the blu-ray player? ;)

If I remember correctly HP did this with the Envy series....at least early on. I think it had more to do with the processor selected, not the amount of memory.

I've been raving about Black Ops in 3D! Seriously....get it, and you will never see gaming the same way again. I am not exaggerating. The whole scene surronds you in reality...and looking through the scopes, omg...and as you turn at diff. angles and the sun shineson the eye piece...its a beautiful thing indeed....

The best way I can compare it to is....if anyone here has every played Quake II with basically no GPU..just the cpu...then you put in a decent GPU and wow, the glow of lasers...shadows..I loved it and Quake II has earned its place in history...as "us" gamers well appriate.... and will forever hold Quake II in high regards.... :)

In summary: 3D has now made a very big impact on gaming...and yes, to me its liek putting in a new GPU for the first time...try it, then tell me how you feel. Now we need strong GPUs like the upcoming HD 6970 in Crossfire to run well in 3D because 3D gaming does usually cut FPS in half..damn, lol.

Regarding the 120Hz screen, Dell speak of a '3D bundle'. Does anybody know if this simply means that I'd get a pair of glasses, or whether there is more to it?

Agree with the above response as well.

Unless on a plane (and would not bring my 17" lappy) why not watch my Blue Ray on my 50" plasma TV. Except for the college dorm room guy, PERHAPS most folks that get/afford an alienware have a large screen TV blue ray set up already and find the blueray in the laptop redundant...

Mandrake, very valid point! :D Since it has HDMI in ....assuming 1.4...anyway, so it should be able to take in the 3D Bluray source from an external Bluray player..yeah... but depends where you are.... you aren't gonna be able to do it on an airplane though. :p

They do need to be powered. They should be rechargeable, but I am not sure if you can replace the battery.

Movie glasses would not work since it is different technology.

can't wait 'til then for the review m8 - looking forward to seeing the battery life results as well! ;) this unit should prove to be quite the machine in that regard, resulting in a hybrid best (relatively) of both the M11x & M17x worlds! :D

You don't really need the Blu-ray - partially because of the HDMI input.

You can just use a PS3 or any Blu-ray player and use that to play to your laptop.

Although I'm interested in if the HDMI-in supports 120hz/3D. If it does.......then this thing is a steal - as even desktop 120hz monitors are lacking when it comes to 120hz capable HDMI inputs.

There is no reason the HDMI in would not allow 3D.

Bandwidth....you have to have HDMI 1.4a to get 3D 120Hz signal on TVs/Monitors

And since the only other HDMI in laptop I have seen is the x8100/x7200 and they use a chip that most agreed SUCKED for HDMI input (limited to 720p i think and quality was iffy), we will have to wait and see how dell implements this feature.

And I use my laptops blu ray as a mobile blu ray player when at friends or relatives houses and they have the TV but no blu ray player themselves.

Well the hardware allows for it so only software would limit it. Worst case, I am sure someone will come with a bypass in case Dell limits it.

so, im reading the manual for the R3 and on page 50 it talks about "nvidia optimus technology" are they using ths over stealth mode? i cant find anything in the manual about stealth mode. in reading the other threads, i hear that it is a baddie anyway.

    this is from the manual:

If an application profile exists, the nVidia GPU is turned on and the application runs in performance mode.
The nVidia GPU is turned off automatically when the application is closed.
If an application profile does not exist, the integrated Intel GPU is used.
The default list of application profiles is updated frequently by nVidia and is automatically downloaded to your computer when you are connected to the Internet.
