Hey Syth, congratulations on your new baby. Do you happen to know the make and model of your HDD and if it is SATA 3?

 

Here you go all the information for the HDD I do plan on replacing it with a 256gb ssd and and 750gb hdd.

Possibly a stupid question but here goes anyways. When I hit fn+f7 to switch cards to the integrated card how do i tell it is actually running on that card or if it is running on the 6990M. I know from past experience with my area 51 - m15x that it would require a reboot and there would be something in the taskbar saying that you are running on the integrated or other card. Only reason I ask is when i hit fn+f7 now it comes up with the popup asking if i want to confirm the switch and when i click yes it does nothing.

 

Right click on your desktop and see if you can access CCC or Intel CP.

 

Hrmm can only access CCC looks like.

well, notebookcheck says 11k on GPU, maybe it is a little bit lower than it should be?

 

For those of you who have re-pasted the GPU, do you remember what size the thermal pads are? 1.0mm or 1.5mm?

You want SATA3 - Crucial M4 is probably the best SSD, go for that like I did. It delivers what it promises and is very reliable.

Also; I'm in love with my M17, nearly killed it yesterday but the awesome people of this forum helped me loads.

 

Crucial M4s are very expensive. I'm trying to spend $1 per GB

edit: Decided to wait and find a sata3 crucial or intel on cyber monday -.-

Just ordered my m17x, I got mine with the 2x500gb hybrids in raid 0, has anyone had any problems with those drives?

I saw your post on your 1TB Raid setup with the Hybrids, I just placed a order, same thing, but then I read some issues from non-alienware people... mostly macs.... have you had any problems with the hybrid drives?

 

Nope i don't have any problems with them. Though I am not using a raid config for them, just using them as one main drive with windows and the other one as files/movies/games. Oh and i love the speed of them, will eventually invest into an ssd when the price goes down a bit more.

Oh ok, Yea, I guess I assumed you had them in Raid 0 .... Glad to hear you like them. Even tho, there nothing compared to a true SSD, spec wise, I like the fact that they have 32MB Cache, and of coarse the 4GB flash. Will see how they do in Raid 0, Dell is pushing them in that setup so, we'll see.

I'm hoping someone can help me out here as I've tried Googling my problem but can't find any solution to it.. I obtained my laptop last last night and when I got it, there was a small nvidia icon on the right side of the taskbar that would allow me to switch between discrete and integrated graphics modes. It was there until yesterday when I installed nod32, ccleaner, chrome and a couple of small apps. The icon has gone now and I can't figure out how to get it back or how to switch between them any more.

The F7 + FN function key also doesn't seem to do anything anymore (whereas before switching graphics modes would make the screen 'flash' once while it adjusted).

In the meanwhile, going by my device manager, it only has the Intel hd graphics listed. The other one is a standard vga graphics adapter which has a yellow exclamation point on it(my discrete graphics card is NVIDIA_GEFORCE-GTX-460M and it doesnt appear there). Im assuming I'm stuck in integrated mode. This doesn't change if I restart, and dont have a graphics option in the BIOS setup(ao8). Tried reinstalling nvidia 460M driver, it only says 'installation cannot continue. This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware.' I still remember I can access nvidia control panel before..

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get my graphics functionality back? Already tried formatting and installing a fresh windows 7 but still the same. No discrete graphics card detected on the device manager.

 

try installing the newest nvidia drivers from dell located here. after that you should be good to go on a second note, the 460m is not a manually switching card and it switches all by itsself. If you are having issues with getting the card to recognize a game just use the guide in my sig to fix it

I can only confirm, got a 2820qm + 580MGTX, all games are maxxed out.
For photos do not now, an alienware is only meant to play

Had to cancel the order.... Grrrrrr trip to US cancelled......

I managed to find a 15% discount voucher and 1/3 off the 3 year full cover on the UK site.

I reordered from them as they finally added the SSD + HD option...

I had to knock the ram back to 8GB 1600mhz from 16Gb but I think that should be ok. The UK ones only come with a blueray ROM not RW which is annoying as well...
