    Hey guys,

Anyone else notice a slight "grnk" kind of noise that lasts for just an instant when you press the power button on your M17x-R2? I'm worried it's a sign of a HDD drive starting down the path of failure, but it seems like I have heard this on other laptops, but don't recall hearing it on mine before recently.

It ain't broken until it does. Worrying about it isn't going to fix it. Just enjoy the machine, and stop wasting time worrying about something that might not even be worth worrying about.

i get a weird sound sometimes when booting up. It almost sounds like a grinding of the fans. I'm not worried, if it breaks down, Warranty will cover it.

Nope, but what's the point of this thread? Are fellow users some how use psychic powers determine your problems?

If it worries you that much, call Dell, and go through the trouble shoot, getting the harddrive replaced, and install all the crap you have on your system again. It's a great way to spend a day or 2 over something that might be nothing.

It should just be the fans cranking up chiefs. I get that sound as well and also when I shutdown the notebook. The fans will sdag dfadss sound on me LOL. As the slow down and come to a stop. The fans also have a little backspin on them I noticed. So thats where that sound comes from.

You should be all good chiefs.

    Cheers. :)

the only sound you "should" hear when you boot the M17x are the fans for about 1 second. (no there is no way to stop this, it is the computer running them to make sure they are working)

Other noises "could" be a sign of many things, like hair, or other "junk" stuck in the fans, it could be your hard drive, or your DVD/Bluray drive. best thing to do would be to get a can of compressed air, clean the hell out of that sucker, (if you can do it yourself, open up that sucker, and clean the video cards and CPU air out take). If after cleaning the dust/junk out of the fans and such, and you still have the noise call an AW tech to come have a look. if a hard drive is making noise that is BAD!!! If I were you, I would not use my laptop much (as if it is the HD the more you use it, the closer it's death will come) and get ahold of a tech.

but then again I am not sure what a "grnk" noise is... hard to read it and put a sound to it.

Bottom line, the M17x has fan noise, and can some times make a bad sound when $hit gets stuck in the fans, this is often the scary sound people hear. On the other hand if (and I stress "if") it is your HD that is a serious problem, and needs to be seen to ASAP.

    Hey Docsteel,

I get this same "grnk" noise as soon as I press the alienhead, on every boot and I have had my system since July. It's the fans starting up, as someone else mentioned and I believe it's the hardware letting the system know that they are functional. It's nothing to worry about and won't kill your beast. However, if it does get louder, or worse, then I would call dell only because you said that it started just recently.

Thanks for all the replies, I appreciate it.

I don't have a BD-ROM (they weren't available when I ordered), so its definitely not that, however...

...both GPU fans were replaced week before last, and the sound seems to emanate from the left, so I think it is likely a fan with the backspin kicking up.

It is worth comparing notes on this kind of thing because that IS what an enthusiast forum is all about

Yup my middle CPU fan has awesome backspin lol. I noticed it was a different or new type of fan as compared to the other fans I have seen on this forum before. It uses different fan fins. Wonder if anyone else has the new fan or has noticed the change.

    Cheers. :)

its your optical drive. My Blu-ray and non blu-ray both made that same noise. Its checking for a disc at start up I'd imagine. I wouldn't worry about anything at this point. Business as usual :)

Right, if it's the sound I'm thinking of its the DVD drive.
