Just received my AW system today. Popped it open to install my new Samsung 830 SSD and the HDD I pulled out says Momentus XT 500GB on the back. I only ordered a regular HDD, but I thought Momentus XT was a Hybrid Drive. Googled searched it and I do not see a regular Momentus XT (non hybrid). Am I confused or did this just happen??

Well in that case the Samsung 830 is going to be my main boot drive and I'll store stuff on the XT. Weird.

Now I have to figure out how exactly to reformat the XT when I put it back in. I'm so new at this.

Weird! I got mine yesterday and after seeing this thread then checked out mine and it was a XT (ST95005620AS) too! LOL dell probably ran out of regular 500gbs. Bonus for me I guess. My question is, will it benefit me cause I use my 500gig for data...

Hate to ask this. I need to add the XT back into the system, but just use it as a storage space and I still need to format it. What is the correct process for doing this?

    1. Install?
    2. Go to BIOS (make some changes?)
    3. Format Drive?

Are u going to use a different drive as ur OS drive? If so, back up ur 500GB first so u keep that new out of the box state of the drive, then format it. For me I placed the data drive in port 0 and boot drive in 1 since my ssd had problems with port 0. Oh and change ur settings to AHCI instead of RAID

-Make sure you put your SSD in AHCI when you installed windows on it
-Slam the XT back in and boot from your SSD
-Go into "computer" from the start menu
    -Format that bad boy

If you didn't install with AHCI you'll have to reinstall windows so just leave both drives in and format the XT during install process of right after. You actually didn't need to leave the XT out for the SSD install process. Just an FYI

I have the SSD in 0 and the HDD in 1. Intel SSD

I've already backed up with alienrespawn for the out of box state, but yes i'm going to re-use the original hard drive. I think the AHCI thing is exactly what I was looking for. THANKS!

You are lucky! I ordered mine with a pair of XT's and it was two months before I realized I was given a pair of normal non XT drives!!

Can't complain about that. I didn't know they even offered the hybrid drives.

Remember: when you're actually installing Windows, take the XT out. Windows has a habit of dumping boot information onto other drives, if they're available. When you have it installed, and it restarts, then you can stick your XT in and use it as normal.

Hey all, yeah I ordered my M17xR3 on 11/30 and when I received it I checked and sure enough Momentus XT Hybrid was in there! Free upgrades can't be beat! I think as someone mentioned above that they must have been short on the regular 500GB drives.

HAHAHAHA...fabulous. Seems that the harddrive shortage has a lot to do with this. Thank the rains in Thailand! :D
