Firstly, M17x R3 with ATI 6970m 2gb ddr5
Besides the compal graphic drivers (downloaded straight from dell drivers website) or the video drivers straight from the resource CD that came with my m17x r3...It seems like any other ATI driver I try downloading/installing does not work.
When I install a new driver, whether 11.1-12.1 versions...I'm just left a catalyst menu with hydravision or w.e that is. There is no graphic options or anything. I can't adjust resolution its stuck @ 1240x768
These are my following steps I've done.
1. control panel, uinstall programs, click ATI catalyst install manager (says its 22.6mb in size) and uinstall
2. It removes the drivers, computer gets rebooted
3. unzip and install new ATI drivers (the ones found here
***GPU Overclocking lounge*** - Alienware Arena Forums )
4. reboot
5. Only hydravision is available on the catalyst menu. I don't even think the actual graphics drivers are installed.
6. Need to revert back to old drivers.
Anything i'm doing wrong here, any steps im skipping or not doing? Nvidia drivers were pretty much straight forward for me; uinstall and update to new drivers. ATI driver seem to be giving me a headache. :[
Now, I've tried using AMD's website to automatically detect and install my graphics, but I get a message saying, "cannot find graphics card, graphic card not compatible etc etc etc."
Hope to get some answers, thanks a lot :]

use this to remove the remains of any drivers after you uninstall them. be careful with this, only use it on things you know you already uninstalled
Guru3D - Driver Sweeper
other than that you have the right idea. the remnants of previous drivers may be causing conflicts, this program helped me get a decent ATI driver working.
PS: I use NVIDIA now -
Try this:
1. Run the driver sweeper as suggested
2. Install the latest Dell driver
3. Download the file 11-12_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe from AMD's website - to download this copy the download link of mobility catalyst control centre and replace the file name in the link with the one above.
4. Install the 11.12 driver linked
5. If the system Blue screens when installing then go back to step 1 and update the graphics driver manually in step 4 through device manager with the extracted files in C:\ATI\Support\11-12_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl
Ok, what am I doing wrong with the graphic drivers? (ATI 6970m)
