    I have the M17x R2.
Every driver is up to date including BIOS.

The laptop works great when plugged in.

If the laptop is unplugged and i try to boot it up it does not boot to windows. You will hear the fans cycle high and the lights on the keyboard light up. If you press the power button it goes blank, almost like its going into hibernation...press the power button again and its back to high fan cycle and keyboard lights.

Once i do the battery pull and hold the power button trick it will boot up. Once it boots up i get the loud beep and the Plug In A supported AC adaptor blah blah. F1 Resume etc etc.

I have to do this everytime i want to use it on battery power.

    Any suggestions?

video driver? GPU(s)? the first portion of this, if you have the 5870s, be sure you are on at least 8.763 + the Dell update to the 5870 VBIOS. This should resolve the issue with booting up to a blank screen under battery.

As for the high fan, as I understand it, this is normal with the 17xR2 - some have described it as a hovercraft. Happens at boot and should go away as the system completes the boot process.

The adapter - plugged in a supported adapter, that message WILL display if booting up under battery power only.

It does the usual Plug In A Supported AC Adaptor.

Although when i leave the ac adaptor plugged in the laptop work like a champ, as long as i boot up with it plugged in and continue to use it while plugged in.

I will have to try and unplug it after the laptop is already plugged in and see what happens.
