Every time I try and use this damn onbaord mic I get constant complaints about the background humm. The fans rev up and the mic just happens to pick up everything I have acoustic echo cancelation and beam forming: light beam enabled. I've tried so many different combinations but nothing works. I just hate to imagine that a GAMING laptop has a worse onboard mic than my old POS $500 HP that I used to have to take out every time I played WoW to use vent.
Is there anything I can do to make this mic better?

I have the same problem, and would like to know if anyone has an answer. The array microphones should be canceling any sort of ambiant noise, not magnifying it....

I had the same problem until I selected the micrphone array as default device.

I didn't even know that the m17x came with a mic
Where is it and how do you enable it?

The two dot holes on top of your screen. On either side of the webcam oles.
Cheers. It should already be enabled and ready to use depending on what your going to be using it for or with.
Cheers.

TurbodTalon Notebook Virtuoso
It's a stereo mic, since it's a left and a right. In Windows Search type in 'Sound Recorder' and you can use it. If you're on Steam, etc., just go to 'Settings' and then the 'Voice' tab to configure it.

So basically, everyone's alienware mic blows. I had the area 51 m15x (old version) and the mic was terrible on that too. I just don't understand how a GAMING notebook can use such a terrible mic.

Never had a problem with the integrated mic. I use it when gaming now and then (when I dont have the headset with me) and have never had any complaints. One thing to double check - settings. both application and windows. Be sure they are not conflicting. As others have mentioned, be sure your app is set for the integrated mic array.

I have the same problem. No matter how I configure it people complain.
