Heya guys, I've been following these m17x threads as best as i can.
Ill admit im a complete noob when it comes to OCing, I'v never done it. I have the Q9000 and I've read on here it can get around 2.4ghz. How would I go about doing this, bios?? and WHERE do I find it. or is it not as simple as clicking and typing. any steps?
Thank you all SO MUCH for any advice, and have a good one guys!

i dont have my system yet and havent gone through bios but it should be straight forward.
boot to bios
go to advanced
go to OC
go to FSB
change the FSB
ta da!
kilthro was the guy who got his to 2.4ghz he can tell you his exact numbers...im not willing to sift through the 1000's of posts here to find it.
i get my laptop with the Q9000 in about 24 hours....going to get to 2.5ghz just to show kilthro whats up -
change it to 1300
-
i think kilthro BSOD at 1300...wasnt his final 1290? anyway try 1300 and down step till it works. no processor is the same as another so you could get higher then him if you are lucky
-
Thanks for all the input guys, Ill be trying it in the morning!
-
why not now?????????????

LOL argh he had to do that to us eh...
-
Try 1500 (lol)
Ok 1500 is doable but not in the 17x...yet
1300 should be ok? what is the ram set to?
Start small and get bigger, i think starting at 1200 should be safe -
I got mine to 1285 stable on FSB.
1286-1300 it would boot but during occt test it would lock the whole system 10 minutes into it.
1300+ the system would not boot.
I believe this is due to the low voltage setting on the chip.
If we can find a way to raise that, we may be able to achieve higher clocks..
I left the ram at 1066.. no need to change this.
On a side note, the bios limits the cap on FSB to 1333.. which is 2.5 ghz.. too bad I couldn't boot at that setting. lol I had to take out the battery and cmos battery to reset everything. -
-
I am sure.. If you remove all power, the settings cant be saved..
So yea, if you remove both batteries you should be good.
*crosses fingers* -
it seems removing the CMOS battery should do the trick
-
I know some people have had issues OC'ing their GPUs, but I've thought of something; have you tried OC'ing the 9400M first before OC'ing the CPU to see of any positive effect? I thought about this seeing as the 9400M in the MCP79 chipset effectively acts as the northbridge.

nice thinking ichime
+ rep
now maggots get to work -
-
-
Thanks!
Ok I set my FSB to 1285, where do I check on here to see if its actually running at 2.4ghz now? Im in device manager but it still says 2.0 -
download cpuz
-
10 char -
Most Excelent! Thanks everyone!
So there isn't anything I should worry about at 2.4ghz right?
-
Sheeesh!
Just fired up Crysis on High, made it halfway through the drop (1st mission scene) and the whole lappy just froze up. I went back into BIOS upon reboot and set my FSB back to 1066...... -
Drop the FSB down 10 points.
These things take testing -

Hey Tim you mind taking some pictures of your BIOS, I would like to get an idea of how the options are set up, I haven't seen anyone post pics of the BIOS options yet. +rep waiting for ya if you can help.
Thanks -
I ran it for an hour to make sure it was stable..
You may have to drop it 5-10 points to ensure it is stable... all chips are diff -
I have no idea what occt even is, im a complete noob at this stuff, trying to learn.
Ummm I put my FSB back at 1066, and just for the heck of it I booted Crysis again on high. This time it made it like 5 seconds into the first cut scene, and just completely froze up. All my BIOS were in the original settings too, I didnt change anything. Im getting really worried now..... -
Try playing it on medium and let me know what happens.
-
hummm seem like a buggy driver
-
Crysis on Medium ran without problems.
The GPU on the right side (DVD Drive side) however, made a super weird screeeching ("Eeeeeeeee") sound for a long while though...... -
ugh ohhhh
seems the GPU whine is a wide spread problem -
I have yet to hear it.
Maybe just the 280's?? -
Would could this possibly mean?
-
sounds like a driver issue
-
SumKallMeTIM sounds like you may have a driver/software issue..
Also, if only one video card is kicking with the eeeeee sound due to it running hot, what about the other one? is it over heating? I would run a hardware monitor like everest to see what the temps are...
OCCT is a stress test application for the gpu and or cpu.. this way you can test your changes to see if it is stable.

Anyone overclocked the Q9000 on the M17? I wanna know what the temps are like.
-
for me on m17x 42-45 Celsius idle and when running occt for 1 hr fully pegged, it was 67-70 Celsius... -
And with QX9300 oced to 3ghz i had 38-41C idle and 78C full load.
Hope this helps for you to compare.
*Voltages at full load were 1,313V at both. -
i didnt see an option in the bios for that -
-
you cant control the voltages in the M17, the OCZ bios (.28) allowed 1.313 volts for the quads like the qx9300 so that we can overclock easily to around 3.2ghz. What M17x owners need to wait for is a new bios that bumps up the core voltage.
-
I just hope that they dont lock out the fsb when they update the bios.. that would be bad for q9000 owners
-
dont worry i highly doubt they will do that. But you can only push the FSB so far so no matter what you will hit a wall.....i dont see dellienware upping the voltage to the point where you can clock the hell out of the FSB.
-
Need more power -
The FSB is limited at 1333 anyway so... We just want default vcore
not undervolted
-
its not limited to 1333, the ram will OC with the FSB...so if you have enough voltage....the fsb could go to 1600 if you want, although u will never get this voltage or cooling lol
-
To go higher than 1333 you will need SetFSB (what doesn't work YET) so basically it's limited.
OBS: Ram can be locked at 1066 or 1333 in M17x so you don't need to run 1:1 and RAM isn't a bottle neck here. -
Well, you can manually enter the FSB in the BIOS, so I guess it is possible to enter a higher number (although I haven't tried
)
-
-
i was talking about using SETFSB not the bios.... i didnt know there wasnt a PLL yet
-
IIRC, someone (mandrake maybe??) emailed the creator of FSB with what someone found to be the PLL so time will tell -
has anyone tried clockgen? its outdated but sometimes works. it will be glitchy but i have had it half a** overclock my core2's before
