    Hey!
I have an M17x r3 with an i7 2670QM 8GB RAM, and an ATI 6990m. I wanted to overclock the GPU and maybe the CPU so I could run BF3 on ultra instead of high(would that help?). The problem is, I do not know ANYTHING about overclocking and what it does/what are the risks/how to do it. I would like to know if overclocking the CPU would be worth it, since I read that it is not as effective as overclocking the GPU.

    Thanks for your help everyone!

Look in the Sticky thread for the M17R3 and you will find a link to overclocking.

But the questions remain, what are the risks? And how do I use the Trixx software thing?

Download and start TriXX (linked above). Click on the Overclocking tab. Use the sliders to move Core/Engine from 715 (stock) to 800 and move Memory from 900 (stock) to 1000, and click on Apply. You have applied a mild overclock to your 6990M. Then try it out and see whether you notice any difference. You might see a small increase in your GPU temperatures, but nothing meaningful assuming reasonable thermal paste. If you wish, you can overclock it further. Risks are minimal using this method. If you push the 6990M further than it can handle, it will just crash, resetting the clocks to the default levels.

download trixx, set the GPU and Ram and you're done. there's nothing to it.

Risks? Rev has already outlined it...essentially no risk. As long as you don't overvolt (which you won't be), the worse that happens is you'll bsod, or the game will freeze. so reboot, set the clock slightly lower, and try again

With regards to CPU...Read the linnk posted by Geo above. If you have questions abotu your turbo and maximizing it on your 2670, ask...
