Hi all, firstly i apologize if this has been brought up before, but I've very little time so thought I'd get straight in and write this rather than do a lengthy search!

Basically, I've just got a brand new m17x r3, and am worried that it's overheating already - using hardware monitor, I'm getting an average idle temp amongst the 4 cores of the 2860qm (stock clocks, haven't messed around with it at all) of 53 degree centigrade, and when running the likes of Napoleon total war and bad company 2, about 78, and every so often 80! As for the gtx 580m (again, hasn't been overclocked), I'm getting slightly more reasonable temps of 53 idle, and 68 on the respective games above.

Now I've read that these temps, especially the CPU ones, are slightly too high, and seeming this machine is literally a few days old, I'm wondering if I should contact Dell in case it's a fan/heatsink/thermal pasting issue? I know I could buy a cooler which I do plan to, but I'd much rather solve the issue over masking it.

    Thanks for the help guys

You actually have pretty good temperatures considering your gaming.

My 2820qm, the predecessor to your 2860 stays idle in the low 50C range also, it seems normal. It actually never goes beyond 65C for me even while benchmarking or gaming for 2+ hours.

And how the HECK are you only getting 68C on your 580m? Mine always goes 75C+ and throttled till I messed around a bit w/ the bios.

On and all, you sir(or m'am) have good temps, dont be too worried. If you are seriously worried, new thermal pads + paste are your best options.

My CPU gets to 80 while gaming and GPU 6990 up to 86 on one (#3) sensor but 79 for main GPU temp with Hwinfo and zGpu. I do not find Hwinfo as accurate, fyi...

I don't think the OP has any worry but won't you eventually repaste the cpu and gpu's in any case?

If your system is otherwise perfect, keep it.

yup, i second what Dr J said 100%...OP has nothing to worry about. vicious2500's computer is still operating within "acceptable" parameters.

BUt like i've said in previous threads, you need to repaste both GPU and CPU because the stock job from Dell is pathetic. Expect temp drops of 10+ degrees if you do a good job.

Thanks for the advice guys, from what you have said and from what I've read through google searches, it would appear I've come off lucky with my gpu temps then, though the CPU temps still worry me a bit, seeming a lot of people say theirs never go above 70 when gaming and mine are hitting the 80s consistently. I've also noticed a Lot of heat coming from the back of the CPU vents (right side), where the gpu vents seem to be blowing out a nice cool breeze, so do you reckon it could be a fan related problem? Tbh I don't really want to be re-pasting this early on, partly because I'm not the most tech savy bloke out there! Is it worth getting a Dell tech over to have a look, see if theirs anything up CPU wise?

Again thanks for your help, really appreciate it

There's really no point calling a dell tech over. You will waste a lot of time on the phone with a support person troubleshooting before they will send someone out to you...i.e., if they send someone. In this case, your temps are not problematic.

As long as the fan is blowing on the CPU side, there is no fan problem.

If you haven't already done so, download a program called prime95 which will stress your CPU and download something to log your temps...something like coretemp. Let is run for 30 mins and see what your temps are

Try propping the back of your laptop on a book. I do that and it helps.

Your CPU temps are absolutely fine. I have 3 different 2nd gen I7 CPUs (2630, 2720ES, and my current 2720) and they all max out at around 82C. These CPU will clock up to their max speed until they reach a certain temp, then they will automatically back down until it cools, then they clock back up again. So your CPU may max out at 82C, but it won't stay there forever. If you are really worried about it you could run Prime95 or OCCT to see your max temps. I am sure they will be just were I said.

    Rest easy. All is fine.
