Hi all, I'm kind of new to the AW17 camp. Got mine around 6 months ago.
I do a lot of video editing. Often when I'm scrubbing through footage in my editing software or rendering out projects my CPU fan turns on. I started monitoring the temps with hwinfo the past week and the highest I see it go is 80 degrees. Is this dangerous or nothing to be worried about?

Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

80C should be fine. Max temp is 100C before shutoff occurs. If you want it cooler you could repaste the CPU, buy a laptop cooling pad and/or control the fans with HWiNFO.

i've had mine peak into the 80s in some instances but were easily remedied by repasting and controlling the fans cos lets face it the fan control on alienware lappies aren't the best.

Thanks for the replies guys. I know 100c is where shut off occurs but I was wondering if 80c is still dangerous for your hardware?

I used to have my fans maxed out on my m15x with hwinfo whenever I was doing something intensive but I remember there was a certain setting (rpm) that they maxed out at. Does anyone know what the max fan speed is on the AW17? And is this a good option to just manually turn the fans on and have them running the whole time I'm editing?

I set my fans to 4000 manual when playing intense games and for normal games about 3800... The main thing to do is repaste which is quite simple.. A good paste like IC Diamond has meant my temps have dropped by 10C compared to stock Dell/Arctic Cooling MX-4 paste... So I've OCed more ;)

I think the max fan speed is like 4800 RPMs. HWiNFO setup is here. I'd bet setting the fan to max will drop your temps but I wouldn't really worry about it, 80C is fine for modern hardware.

80 won't hurt the CPU no but it is higher then most people like to see. The only way to keep the CPU under that if you have it on a heavy load is to manually take control of your fans as others have suggested. You can try repasting but I wouldn't expect anything phenominal for improvements although you will probably see a few degrees difference. The problem is the CPU fans don't kick in fast enough so by the time they kick in the temp is already to high....Alienware needs to fix the fan tables but they won't....You can try a cooling pad but honestly that won't help under heavy loads unless you mod the cooling pad with additional fans and more air movement. A cooling pad will help get more air to the system but my U3 does not make any difference what so ever in terms of benching the system with or without it temp wise as the temps go just as high with the pad as without it.

Honestly I wouldn't start worrying until you see 90.

EDIT: Are you using Alienware's terrible OC setting in the bios? That will drive temps up and spike them all over the place...I wouldn't recommend it for the stupidly low difference it would make.
