Overheating GPU?

Hi all,

Haven't been on here in a while.
I have an M17 laptop for about 2 years with an Nvidia geforce GTX 880m.

2 nights ago I was playing CS GO when my laptop just shut off in the middle of a match. I assumed it was from over heating. But that's never happened before. So last night I played a 30min match and ran HWinfo at the same time. I noticed my GPU temp got up to 89 degrees. Is that excessively high?
I used to have an M15X and I would open the laptop up frequently to clean out the GPU fan which acquired a lot of dust. I honestly have never done this with my M17, I've never even opened it up. Do you think this is the issue?

The past few months I have had issues with my GPU as well. The nvidia experience thing constantly has notifications for updates no matter how many times I update the driver. And somewhat frequently my laptop won't recognize the graphics card. I'll try running a game or do some video editing and everything is extremely laggy. I'll go into my device manager and the only thing I see under display adapters is the internal intel graphics, no nvidia card.

Any help with these issues would be greatly appreciated!

 

Yes, 89C is too hot. The GPU will throttle at 93C.

I think your first step would be to blow out the heatsink fins with compressed air. Then run your test again. I have the 880M in my Clevo and have done some mods to try keep it cool.

Do I need to open up the laptop in order to do this? If so is there a good guide online you could recommend to show me how to do this?
Sorry if it's a stupid question. I used to do it all the time with my m15x but I'm not as familiar with the inside of the m17, so it scares me a little. Don't want to mess anything up.

 

I just noticed my CPU is also pretty hot too. it's at 89 degrees right now and says it's maxed at 91 already :/

 

Yes, obviously you need to open the laptop to do this, you are saying that it was never done, 100% sure that stock thermal paste dried out, and It's causing heat lockup and throttling.

It's a fairly easy job to do once you get it done, For best way to clean them is to get alcohol swabs from amazon and arctic cleaning kit use the kit and then wipe off using those swabs (prep pads) make the Die and heatsinks look clean and dry (don't worry about the alcohol it vaporizes fast, that's 70% IPA in swabs It should do the work I did my TIM job using them )

Now the Thermal paste, best is to get Gelid GC extreme or Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut and use X method or 2 lines on the GPU and for CPU one line (line, should be not too thick or super thin it should be adequate go through a few videos and here's HTwingnut Clevo forum review thread & check this video that might help - 90 secs repaste)

LCDreplacemnt, If you ever wanted to change the LVDS cable (60Hz) to 120Hz (eDP) cable be careful on choosing the correct port.

 

If you are not seeing your Nvidia GPU in device manager that might be an issue with the GPU. So first you might want to re-seat it and then re-paste then clean the fans. Next step check if you have the latest BIOS and if not then update.

Is there a tutorial somewhere showing how to check what BIOS you are running and how to update? (Something else I haven't done in years ><)

 

You will have to login to the BIOS and on the Main page it will show you the BIOS version you currently have(See attached photo).

Then you can go on: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Products?~ck=mn then enter your service tag and that will bring up the support page for your laptop where you can download all the latest drivers and the latest BIOS for your laptop including the instructions.

So I ended up buying some compressed air. I opened up my laptop and it turns out the CPU fan/ventilation area was covered in dust as I had expected. I cleaned it out as best as i could and now my temps are way lower. When gaming my cpu temps are averaging 60-65 degrees. My GPU maxed out at 80 degrees the other day. I already ordered the paste and cleaning materials. Are these temps fine or do you think I should still go ahead and repaste?

 

I have SLI 880M in a Clevo P570WM and am getting 80-85 Celsius max with cleaned fans and heatsink and newly applied IC Diamond. I'd say you're fine at 80 Celsius. The thermal paste in it might be old now, but usually notebook manufacturers do a better job at applying it than most people do.
