Hi I have a M17X laptop. It has a dual Geforce Gtx 280m.
Ive been getting the obnoxious black screen that usually came back and a few minutes later the BSOD came. When it first started I called dell and they changed the vid cards.. Its doing the same thing but its not coming back forcing me to force shutdown the laptop,
I ran FutureMark benchmark and its showing that 1 of the cards reaches over 100c while the other stays just fine. Ive downloaded several softwares to try to manipulate the fans bt wont let me as that option appeares blacked out and i cant.. Who can help me please?

Hi TxnerT,
I just had this problem, but with both cards (260M's, for me)... Portal 2 caused GPU0 to go up to 109.7C once, and other new games using both cards would routinely go to about 104-106... I changed my thermal interface material, used MX-3, and Fujipoly thermal pads. Do you feel comfortable doing a thermal interface material change? If not, I'd highly recommend you look into it, and get down just what has to happen.
Once swapped out, I had a few days to test out the T.I.M. change, and the result was that I haven't recorded temps going over 70C since. My maximums were actually 65 and 67, I believe, and averages were around 60-62 during games like AvP, L4D2, and Supreme Commander 2. I didn't have much time to test any other games, because of my latest problem of a nonresponsive quad-core (upgraded from a dual). But yeah, swapping the thermal material is a pretty good-looking solution in my mind.
As for where to buy, and what to buy... MX-4 you can get just about anywhere. One 4 gram syringe is more than enough. For the Fujipoly thermal pads... I got those from FrozenCpu.com. From what I ended up using, I'd recommend getting 1.0mm thick pads for the GPU's RAM, of which you only really need a single VGA-sized cut (if used for absolutely nothing else, and you don't slip up while cutting), as well as one more VGA-sized cut of 1.5mm for the larger gaps. In addition to these two smaller pads, I used a fair amount (about 2/3 of a "quarter sheet") of a .5mm pad. Hope these are the right dimensions for the GTX 280m, also!
Luck to you!

Great post. I also recommend cleaning out your vents and fans with some compressed air.

Thats to techy for me as i dont understand a bit of it hehehe..
Is there any other way to fix this issue?
I dont think the fans turn on or are on. And i cant find anything to turn them on. As you can see futuremark shows them as off, and every program i download that has the an option i cant use it because its like greyed out meaning i can not change the options...

Don't discount the obvious! Dust.
You might have gotten to the point where the dust build up has gotten to the point where it simply can't be removed without opening up your computer; a can of compressed air may just push the dust clump further inside.
In any case, the fans are easily accessible on the bottom of your computer it should be serviceable by anyone. Just pop it open and use a can of compressed air to remove the dust from the inside.
Solve this, the simplest part of the equation, before going on to troubleshoot your fans. -
Also, the reason one of your graphic cards aren't heating up is because the version of furmark you are running is not the multi-gpu version (thus only using your main vid card).
As for what was said before.... you may need to change your thermal paste on your gpu's and clean out your system (of dust)

Guys,
I had the issue before and dell sent me new cards and fans thinking they where damanged. This are brand new pieces.. What gets me is when it freezes up and i do a hard rebot when it turns on the fans turn on and you can hear them. But they turn off 5 seconds later and never come back on again.. :/ -
