Guys is it possible to install a small 16GB pcie SSS into the empty pcie port in the M17x R3
    For cache purposes

I know that the port would prefer the wwan card but isn't a pcie just another pcie I can use it for a SSD can't I?

I'm not sure if the system would recognize it, but even so, in doing research on mini-pcie ssds, they get significantly slower speeds than SATAII and III capable SSDs and cost nearly as much for less space. (16 gig for $70, 32 gig for $120, 64 gig for $200+)

In addition, all of the mini-pcie SSDs that I found are full length instead of half length. I dont believe a full length card will fit in our machines.

Kingston, Corsair and OCZ ~60 gig SATA II SSDs from Newegg only cost $80-$90 and have read/write speeds more than twice that of the mini-pcie cards.

    For example:
Newegg.com - OCZ Agility 2 OCZSSD2-2AGTE60G 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
    $84.99 after MIR, 285MB/s read, 275 MB/s writes.

The Mini-PCIe cards I saw only had 110MB/s reads.

MiniPCIe SSDs aren't much slower than full sized ones, except on paper. You will rarely utilize the full sequential R/W speeds in real life. Almost all SSDs have the same access time and similar random R/W speeds (which do not even exceed SATA/150 yet), so they will generally perform very similar to each other. Going from any HDD to a SSD, will be a big noticeable difference; however, from a "low end" SSD to "high end" one, the differences are not very noticeable.

Agreed, however the OCZ MiniPCIe SSDs physically are too large to fit in that slot.

The space around the slot is only large enough for a half height wireless card.

oh thanks guys the posting was extremly informative

but really just want to use something internally as a cache for the ready boost feature....i know it made some impact on a win7 32bit on 4gb ram and a t9400...and i would like to do the same for the M17Xr3...without using up the SD slot. or having an ungainly USB 2.0 stick connected

if not can you advise what would be needed to perhaps use this slot for a tv tuner

    or anything else more productive

Can you not just use a flash drive in a USB port and remove it when you shut down?

^i could but I'd like to keep it integrated, ergo the internal pci-e SSD msata..what about a tv tuner? Will it need an external/internal antenna ?

It should work fine. However speeds are nothing to be happy about.

I have a 8gb mini pci-ssd and speeds are horrific. ~24mb/s read and write continuous.
