I have read a lot of threads and stories about how bad their Alienware is, with all sorts of problems...

Well, here I am starting up a thread with a perfect working Alienware M17x. So, for everyone else who happens to have one, please chip in! :D

    I have a i7 820qm = High processing power without power usage/throttling problem.

Single mobility HD5870 but 'overclocked' to desktop HD5770 speed = High performance ( faster than a single GTX 480m ) without the crossfire problems.

    Intel X25-M SSD 160GB + 500Gb 7200rpm = Extreme speed and storage space!

8GB DDR3 1333 RAM = Never runs out of RAM. Period.

RGB LED 1200p @ 17 inches = Best pixel to size ratio and after calibration, the screen just screams!

240w power brick = With just one GPU and a non-extreme processor, there's a lot of room left for overclocking without running out of power! :)

By the way, my WEI scores are:

    Processor
    7.2
    Memory (RAM)
    7.4
    Graphics
    7.4
    Gaming Graphics
    7.4
    Primary Hard Disk
    7.8

    Hi there,

Great to hear about your perfect story.

I was just wondering how you went about overclocking your GPU? I've tried rivatuner, ati tools and amd gpu clock tool so far without success. Any tips and help would be great.

    Cheers.

    Hi there

    Thanks for the reply.

I gave that above amd clock gpu tool a go yesterday however I wasn't able to OC both my cards. I managed to set one however when I went to set the 2nd gpu card to the same 800 and 1100 settings it kept giving me an error msg saying I couldn't do it or something and other times it would just hang the system.

    Cheers.

My bet is, your second card might be that lemon? Well, every card has different potentials. :)

I have to agree with you. When I had my M17xR2, I decided, after reading of all the problems, that a 820QM was the best CPU option due to the specs being very close to the 920XM chip (minus overclocking), and my system was just like yours with max RAM, single 5870 and SSD's. No problems whatsoever regarding performance. I have since sold it (made a few $$$), and now have repurchased another M17xR2 from the Outlet using current 20% off (cost about $1080 w/5870 and UltraSharp RGBLED), and will be looking for some cheap upgrades (SSD and CPU). In my case, a single 5870 give me the best possible graphics performance (I don't game, but like to have the power when I need it), and I don't have the Crossfire headaches.

I've purchased and configured quite a few M17xR2's for friends, family and clients, and yes, this model seems quirky.

I think that issues like these actually create a better knowledge of the inner workings and more innovation on improvements since users that thrive on fixing things and making them work better eat this stuff up! (we thank you, btw!). There would certainly be fewer posts here if the M17xR2 were a perfect machine!
