Please Help: Yet Another M17xR1 Graphics Issue

So, trudging around using GPU-Z, I noticed on my SLI setup one card is "stuck" at 383/300/766 while the other is staying at full speed (550/950/1350). This occurs even during games (GPU-Z log to follow when i wake up more).

Tried clearing this with RivaTuner (horrible disaster), NPT (froze system), and dumped vbioses to see what's going on (evidently 3d is set to this while "extra" is full clocks). Should I get the cards swapped while I still have time on my warranty? It ends this week i think, so I need to hurry on this one. May also try rolling back to Dell betas (pre-2xx) to see what happens, although that would suck as that breaks newer games....

if it's still under warranty let them fix it/replace the bad one! if not what cards are they?

 

So I called AW support; got AW-Jose. After explaining to him everything I've done to verify the clocks are wrong, he proceeds to try and download GPU-Z (already have it) and benchmark the system. Since the benchmark program is going to take the better part of an hour to download (got to love AT&T DSL... *sarcasm*) he then checks his notes and comes up with this beauty (I couldn't make this up if I tried)...

I had to contain myself immensely, as last I checked was even though SLI works in a master/slave relationship the clocks have to be the same. If the clocks on the master are low, the clocks on slave are set low to match. If the clocks on master are high, the clocks on slave are set high to match (which is why it's never a good idea to try and SLI two cards with different clock speeds).

Can someone with more experience with Dellienware tech support help here? I already know how this benchmark is going to go (poorly) but am I going to get more BS from Tier 1 or can I request the punt up to a higher level of support? Really bothers me as I got this when I needed the keyboard replaced too (tech actually broke the OSD and Throttlestop somehow, luckily I was able to roll back to a previous image of the computer I made before the call).

 

The phone techies read off the screen as to what they're meant to say. They won't ask for replacements unless the criteria on the screen is met in which case you need to DEMAND to speak with the supervisor. In their little dumb world if the Benchmark criteria is met, the cards are 100% fine. They like to DL a lot of crap onto the PC also....-.- Just be assertive!

Got Felipe this time; got told first that by installing nVidia's Verde drivers I broke it which I got a little hot about. Once again described everything I did but refused the AlienConnect as I don't want them poking around (especially since I'm at work atm); got told this time I need to roll back to the last Dell issued nVidia drivers and run 3DMark to prove there's a clock issue. This should be fun.... gotta figure out how to tell the drivers not to run in SLI mode.... (option to disable SLI is faded out, maybe because I'm in Hybrid mode).

 

WOW has always been famous for SLI issues - at least thats what I recall. Be sure you are on a supported driver, try the latest Dell driver and also update the SLI profiles via the SLI profile updater on NV's site. See if that resolves the issue.

What about other titles?

If both GPUs are not clocking up then you most likely have an issue. If one GPU is clocked up to max 3D clocks and the other is idling (check temps to confirm - 1 will be hotter than the other) then this tends to point to an incompatible SLI profile.

Also, FWIW, you really should disable any third party apps (yes, I mean Throttlestop) and if overclocking, revert to stock clocks when troubleshooting. Just a suggestion.

Hope it works out. If you dont go anywhere with support and HAVE worked with them to troubleshoot, you can escalate - see the AW Warranty issues thread in the main forum. Remember, you MUST work with them and allow them to troubleshoot.

Well, not just using WoW to check (just what I use the most); clock issue is also evident with Civilization 5, Team Fortress 2, Dragon Age, and Starcraft 2. I do not have logs for all of those (only short WoW session and about 15 turns of Civ 5). RivaTuner and NPT were put in to try and get the clocks back (didn't work) so at this time there is no overclocking on the 260m's at all.

I have tried testing with ThrottleStop off, same results. For giggles, I even dumped the vBios from both cards and did a compare (in case one got damaged some how); they are both identical. Although, interestingly, the clocks I'm seeing on one of the cards corresponds with the "3D" performance level (at least, according to NiBiTor); the expected clocks match with the first level, "Extra".

For giggles, I did what Felipe asked; uninstalled 260.89 and used Driver Cleaner to make sure it was gone. Installed the Dell 257 drivers but haven't gotten a chance to benchmark yet as the system is now freezing every 15 minutes again; activating/de-activating ThrottleStop is not affecting this either. Funnily, this time both 260m cards are now reading the right clocks instead of one being stuck but I have to wonder if the lock ups are associated with one card not liking where it's been clocked to....

Update (FWIW):

Called again today after testing, although my own tests found nothing wrong with the cards (3DMark06 scores as expected SLI and non-SLI, temps as expected). Unusually, after all this messing around with activating and deactivating SLI the card clocks went back to normal (going to 550/950/1350 when queried by GPU-Z, scaling as expected by demand). Note that I only ran the system long enough to get those numbers (10 minutes, reset, 10 minutes, reset to restore SLI, shutdown) and didn't use the laptop anymore until I called Dell again.

On this call I got Melissa who finally gave me a service request number and told me to follow up with her if I still experienced lock-ups (e-mail provided to me); she checked the computer with AlienConnect but of course nothing would crash while she did that. As I said before, with the cards appearing to work fine, there's no reason for a hardware swap so I didn't press it. She told me to try gaming and to get back to her if anything didn't work.

Of course, now I can not get any 2xx drivers to work. Ran the Dell 257, locked up four times (once in WoW, Civ5, and Dragon Age) and then froze during normal use after about 20 minutes. Try totally removing those (uninstall, safe mode, driver sweeper, safe mode again, driver sweeper again, reboot to regular windows) and moving back to the 260.83 WHQLs where I had little to no problem (occasional lock up in WoW but I was able to play up to 2 hours without it locking up at times). Unfortunately, now the 260.83's appear not to work either so I'm stuck having to roll all the way back to beta P06 (always seem solid, too bad Civ5 runs like crap with them in DX11 mode).

Anyone with any other advice? I think Melissa is just going to come back with the form answer; "Clean install Windows 7 and try 257 again." Kind of sucks because I get the feeling as time goes on more games I want to play on PC are going to be like Civ 5; needing the Verde drivers to play halfway nice.

You're telling me! Insult to injury, P05 and P06 refuse to install... My laptop is close to a flying trip...

Since I now have a service request number, if it happens I need repair and warranty elapses (few more days) am I covered or screwed?

260.63 nVidia Beta - Installed clean; lock up every 20 to 40 minutes.
257 Dell WHQL - Installed clean; lock up every 20 to 40 minutes.
Dell P06 - Will not install (no changes made, tried with clean install and with P04 installed)
Dell P05 - Will not install (same as P06)
Dell P04 - installed; solid but some games run poorly.

 

Yet another call last night, yet another TS rep...

This one stayed with me for almost 2 hours! We uninstalled 257, ran Driver Sweeper like it was going out of style, removed some programs/drivers that I really didn't need anymore (UltraVNC, when was the last time I had to remote work like that?), and had the usual fun. He installed 257 right back in, benchmarked with 3DMark06 about three times, and declared the system stable. I was able to use it for a bit, but sure enough within another hour it locked up. Did the uninstall polka and went back to 260.89 again, still locking up.

I've just about given up on using 2xx drivers, which is a kick to the nuts because it cripples modern gaming on this laptop. However, as I mentioned in the 260.89 thread, I noticed "NVR0FlashDev" hanging around in the Non-Plug and Play devices list with a big yellow icon. This driver failing has been linked to crashes/lock up before, so on a whim I deleted it and made sure it was out of the registry (should have one or two entries).

Testing now, hopefully this may be what has been bugging out. A long shot but I can hope.
