Hi guys, I just bought a refurbished Alienware M17x R2 last weekend when they have a 25% off code. And I'm new to these kind of tech, so I don't know whether I got a good deal or not...

So this is my system :

    Alienware M17x R2 Laptop
    17 inch UltraSharp WXGA+ (1440x900) LCD Display
1 GB SLI GDDR3 Nvidia GeForce GTX 285M
250 GB SATA II Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
    6 GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHZ
    Dell Wireless 1520 802.11n Half Mini-Card
Processor Intel Core i7 740QM Quad Core Processor, 1.73GHz (2.93GHz Turbo Mode, 6M Cache)

    9 Cell Primary Battery

The total came up as $950 after tax + shipping.

So yeah... I dont really know if this is a decent system or not. So i decided to create an account here and ask the "masters" :D. I'm not really into heavy gaming and such; I only use my laptop for work and occasionally normal games like Heroes of Newerth.

    My questions are :
1.Is this a good deal ($950) ? Are those config. good?
2.1440x900 screen for a 17'' laptop? Do you think it would look pretty? I'm using a dell studio 17'' with 1920x1200 and I'm pretty satisfied with the resolution, some people I know said 1440x900 would have less room on screen, however, my laptop would run faster.

    You need the 1200p.

ahhh... the thing is I shopped in refurbished section so the choice is limited. And also when I already ordered it and after its shipped, I realized I just order a 1440x900 screen. So what do you think? Do you think I should return it or keep it ( Depends on how good the deal is ?)

    i have bought my r2 for 980$
only dif is video (single 5870)
    and screen (rgb led 1920x1200)
it is highly recomended!!! to try to get rgb led screen if you want r2!!! (deal breaker for me)

otherwise price is fine...but remember 1440x900 screen sucks...i would return it and get 1200p

Most people consider the 1200p screen to be the most important feature of the R2. Since yours doesn't have one, it would be considered less desirable. Personally I wouldnt buy it unless it had the better screen. The 285 is an older mobile GPU now also. It isnt a bad laptop by any means, but I would return it and hold out for something better, espicially since you already have a 1200p screen and will notice the difference.

well, you can handle it, it's all right, but it's true that the 1920x1200 is better and do a big difference, but anyway I think you will be happy with it , otherwise, buy a full hd monitor and plug it on your laptop and it's gonna be all right.

Ahhhh I hate myself so much for this, I saw the total comes up to <1000 and bought it right away, I assumed it would automatically has 1920, then later that night I checked the bill and I'm crushed ... Sigh, if I decide to return I have to pay the shipping again, then wait for some good deal on alienware :(

Thank you guys for answering my questions.

Another question tho... Do you think it's worth it to send back to Dell for an upgrade from 1440 to 1920? Or do you think I should just send it back completely and wait for another slick deal?

I agree with everyone here the RGB led is a must! when i was getting my r2 I was going for 1400x900 but members here highly recommended rgb led, so i got one with it, best screen ever on a gaming laptop! for $950 I would return it and just be patient for a deal. A 20% discount is fairly common now maybe once a month.
