I have an M17xr2 and an M18x, and the M18x is much more quiet that then M17xR2. Is there a way to get my M17xR2 as quiet as the M18x? or is that an upgrade alienware made to their new computers? It's really annoying.

Its probably cause the m17x r2 uses the older i7's which has the 45nm die and the m18x uses sandybridge and ivybridge and has the 32nm and 22nm die, the smaller the die the cooler it runs basicly, it goes the same for the gpus they use. When i had my r2 i just used headphones so i dont hear it. Try repasting and clean the vents and fans out.

Sorry for the OT question, but since you owned both as well, do you think the M17xR2 is going to be some sort of collectors edition computer because of the screen, or do you think the screen on the M18x is not much difference?

A lot of members here still keep their m17x r2 because of the rgb led screen and that screen was the best! While keeping their m17x r2 they upgrade to the 920xm processor to keep up with the sb and ivy preformance and bios mods so the new gen gpus that the r3 and m18x has. The r2 is still a great laptop if youbare willing to do the upgrades but sometimes it can even out to a m18x so might aswell buy the m18x but u will loose that exclusive screen. Lastly the m18x lcd is not bad compared to the rgb all you have to do is adjust the digital vibrance for nvidia cards and for amd just increaase the saturation in ccc, but it wont match the rgb led exactly.

Thanks..I also like that they offered the M17r2 in silver. I don't know why they don't offer that color for the M18x. Maybe it's because alienware owned the company during the m17xr2 build, and they offered more choices before Dell bought the company. Dell then bought the company and limited the choices for the M18x, and it became less of a custom computer, and more mass produced like most dells are. Who knows?

Not unlikely. After the acquisition by Dell, Alienware stopped being a boutique brand. ;)

Except that the M17x-R2 was released long after Dell acquired Alienware. It's a creature of Dell design and engineering. I think the same applies to the R1, but time obscures those memories.

The first 17" Alienware model released under Dell was indeed the M17x which shares the same chassis as the M17x R2.

I like my noisy M17x ... when it gets revved up it sounds like a jetplane taking off.

Now I just need to cut the muffler so it makes a real flappy noise when it idles.
