Hey, in the owners lounge there have been talks of people getting the wrong heat pipe on their 4900 and 4930 in the new Alienware 17. Mine came with a 2 pipe on the i7-4930xm so I am trying to see how many people have which version.

I can't believe an extreme edition CPU comes with a dual pipe heat sink, unless the pipes are thicker / wider.

So far there have only been rumours with little confirmation of the fact. One user did post that he had 3 heat pipes but failed to confirm because he sent his laptop back to be replaced.

I also want to point out that a few years ago, I made a poll about this and people said 3 heat pipes mistaking the GPU heatsink for the CPU one. So please, if are stating you have a triple pipe heatsink. Post a picture to prove it.

I've only seen them added on the PC.

What do you mean by added on the PC? Please elaborate...

I see, so are you saying a triple pipe heatsink for the AW17 exist?!

No, but I've seen the 3 pipe heatsink added and modded for previous revisions. I would assume that the AW 17 could have the same thing done.
We have only one heatsink type for the AW 17 listed on our system and it's a dual pipe one. Part number is C61N1.

Hmmm, so why all the misinformation around this from other users? Maybe the person who posted that they have a 3 pipe will provide a picture.

Member "alienwolf" claims to have two triple pipe heat sinks in his system. He ordered the 4900MQ and 780M. I ordered the 4930MX because I wanted a little more performance and expected a triple pipe. I suppose I'll find out tomorrow...

Alienwolf will be sadly let down then... I would of purchased the 3-pipe over a year ago if that was the case, i have yet to see one still for the CPU.

Lol, I asked you like three times...

My AW 17 should arrive in a few hours, so, I'm hoping for a triple-pipe. Tech support assured me it will be a triple-pipe. I called twice and spoke with two different people, if that's any consolation.

I can say this the cooling on the 17 is top notch you will have no problems in that regard. Don't know how I screwed that up on the pipes have a lot of life going on maybe..sorry.

Fingers crossed buddy. Not to put a downer on things but I have a feeling that the triple pipe responses from the techs may be because they thought you were talking about the GPU because I'm aware that the GPU comes with a triple when you order the 780m and double when you order the 770m. They may be assuring you about the GPU heatsink.

I specifically said, "CPU" and "4930MX" several times, and even after they said it came with the triple-pipe, I reiterated and asked yet again. I'm hoping their information is accurate. It is possible they may have confused Alienware 17 with the Alienware 18, but shouldn't have... I gave them my order information and it clearly says, "Alienware 17."

EDIT: Called again and it doesn't come with a triple-pipe. See third page.

There will be no 3-heatpipes, unless they will make it specially for you :) I searched and researched many times, I think the reason is because if they add 3 heat pipes in the heatsink system, the area will get too crowded and it will result more heat instead of better cooling (my 2 cents idea). But I am sure there is no 3 way heat pipe...

Looks like they don't have a triple pipe for the CPU on the AW17...

Just called again and the tech opened up a system that was available (somewhere, I guess at the depot) and he said it had a dual pipe heat sink! I'm shocked because it's an extreme edition CPU. Hopefully this doesn't limit or restrict overclocking.

My guess is the pipes are going to be wider or thicker than the others with the XM CPU. I can't imagine them using the exact same one... My system is a couple hours away from being delivered. I'll confirm this once it arrives.

It wont impede you all that much for your 24/7 I don't think.

Haswell reaches a certain point and then just skyrockets in power consumption and after that point even desktops struggle.

I was planning to use the AW 18's PSU to overclock. Not sure if I can do much, though. Seems like everything is so restricted this year...

I hate to bare bad news again, but the part number for the CPU heatsink is no different then those for the R3/R4. I beleive dell calls that the "bottom line" they gotta save a buck somewhere. The new AW is new on the outside but more or less the same on the inside layout wise, i would hate to say rebranded, but i am saying rebranded...

I purchase a new system every 4 years, so i now i am truly getting all new hardware.

Yep. My system came with a dual pipe heat sink.

They could definitely fit a triple pipe in there... How lame.

Hey @J.Dre, could you please see if you can read the labels on the heatsinks, both CPU and GPU. I want to know what the part numbers are.

    Thanks!

I finally voted! However, I see that all the information in the 'poll' are wrong and misguiding. Maybe the moderator can change it. There is no proof whatsoever that anyone has a 3 pipe heatsink in their system...

Widezu69, still has hope for there being a possible different part number for the heatsink, part of the squatch may exist, or it could just be a heavily deformed elk/moose that from a distance looks to be that mysteries squatch... and people want to just believe because that would truly be awesome!
