Poor FPS in Rift ... even with a 6990?

I upgraded from an Asus G73JH which had a 1.7GHz CPU and a 5870 to an m17x R3 with a 2.2GHz CPU and a 6990. However, in Rift even at "high" settings I'm only getting ~45 FPS. Most games this is fine, however in Rift I feel like unless I lower settings enough to get 55+ it looks like crap.

I mainly notice it in player and NPC names. When you are moving it's very hard to read their names unless I have a 55+ framerate. I find I have to go down to medium settings and tweak a few things to get a decent FPS. Anyone else have similar issues or a solution?

In wow, I can set it to ultra and I have a constant flat 60 FPS (with verticle sync on).

Yep, that sounds normal to me.

The 6990 is a bit weaker than a desktop GTX560. The desktop GTX560 gets 45 FPS on maxed...

And how many M17x's do you need lol?

    Man, that's pretty weak.

p.s. And I only need 1 of the 3 laptops... long story :) First 17x is going back today.

Dunno if I've ever seen 45 FPS called a poor framerate...

Did you try OC'ing the 6990m?

Do you have it MAX maxed? Or just the generic ultra setting? Cause the highest setting still doesn't push all of the sliders all the way up.

I'm on the "high" preset seeing the ~45 fps. Like I said, 45 fps is usually fine. But in Rift it's not. I'm not sure how to explain it precisely, but when moving around things don't look smooth. It did the same thing on my old machine and I just blamed it on lack of hardware. I thought the extra 500MHz in cpu and the 6990 over the 5870 would have solved it.

Well, you seem to have already addressed this by saying the problem is fixed if you go to medium settings...

But I have noticed, Rift just ISN'T super-smooth. Are you sure medium actually fixes your issue? Have you tried vsync both on and off? Just really seems weird that 45 FPS would not feel smooth.

^ obviously you don't get why we have DTR's. I recently sold off my ultra-high-end machine.

Anyway: Rift is a GPU hog, with my 3x GTX 580's I couldn't play at 5760x1080 at ultra with supersampling on...Without Supersampling it runs great.

Really don't understand why someone who would say this even bothers to come to a gaming laptop subforum.

    Trolls are weird...
