how does this thing fair on portability and batterylife (using word/ surfing web). Is it hard to carry around and open where ever or meant to just stick on your desk. Currently have an m14x thinking of selling to get an m17x r3

it varies really, windows constantly refigures what it would give you depending on the task your doing. on IGP i get about 3hours life surfing maybe more, 4 and a bit if im light. watching a movie i get over 2 hours - mkv. gaming about 1 hr 20 mins or so.

The battery life is fine if you tinker around a bit w/ the power settings. It also depends on which graphics card u get.

Going from a m14x to a m17x r3 you will see a substantial difference in size and weight. Having had both I still enjoy the m17x for the added screen size (it helps when doing research for me). I carry mine around on campus at least three days a week no problem.
Battery life around 4-5 hours depending on your settings. -
running my m17xr3 on intel graphics and power management on i get around 3 to 4 hours of usage with wifi on.
with ati card on it dies within 1 hour. -
the batterylife sounds very similar to the m14x's. 4-5 its what it gets too. Is there any type of extended battery or something for this thing?

with PowerSave GPU + 1 SSD + Turn off AlienFx or Dim & goDark mode + remove my wired deathAdder mouse and use wireless mouse logitech m705 instead + turn down the brightness into low level + power save mode + wifi on
I got about 6hour30min to burn (battery wear -2%, about 92W/90W)
If you play with the power option
> set the dim brightness, turn off display = 1min ... this way u can save more battery life (u can't just working non-stop in 6hours straight w/o breaktime, right ?) -
The joys of not having 3d.

I got right around 5 hours on mine with the IGP enabled, low-ish brightness, and the power profile set to power saver - doing a wide variety of non-gaming activities including creating Visio diagrams, web browsing and watching some youtube videos.
Pretty impressive IMO for a 17 inch gaming laptop.
