Hey i have the m17x r2 and i have noticed that when playing games, the top right side of the PC gets extremely hot. You cant keep your hand on the metal casing where the little side vents are right under the audio ports for longer than a few seconds without it burning. Additionally you can feel the heat on the numpad. The fans are whining so i know they are working, although the airflow out the back is not exactly forceful except around where the CPU fan exausts.

i was wondering if anyone else who has the m17x r2 has this same issue. I am thinking this might be why the FPS in some of my games appears to be a little odd. I should be able to max out BFBC2 but really have to run it with a mix between Med. and High settings with AA and AF off. (yes HBAO is off). I attriubted this to my 1.6 core i7 quad core but after realizing how hot the pc was getting am i suspicous.

    Thanks guys!

Use GPUZ to check ur temps. If it overheats(above 100C), it will throttle or shutdown. So it could be.

according to GPU-Z, GPU 1, which is on the top right of the PC, under load, peaks out at around 103 degrees C. while GPU 0 tops out at around 85-90. The CPU hovers around 55-63. Im assuming these temps are bad? Would this be a call to dell to fix whatever under warranty

GPU temps are too high. U need either a GPU repaste or call dell. I consider safe temperature is below 85C. 100C will cause your GPU to slow down and protect itself from damaging.

I would say everything under 90c is safe. When my R2 was brand new, I have seen it peak on 88c on both cards. Now a few montes later, it still peaks on about 88c. I know that this is totally normal, as I have gone through a swap of both gpus (due to the tech messed up my XFire when he was replacing my screen). After swapping the gpus, I have seen a peak on 87.5c which is more or less the same.

100c on the slave card is insane, but the main card seems pretty normal as it is in the 85-90c range. I would rule out the possibility of clogged vents for this reason, as the main gpu does not seem to be affected. My guess is that the paste on the slave gpu is bad.

Another possibility could be that the slave card is failing.

I will call them when I get off work in a couple of hours, probably around 2pm EST. I go on vacation starting July 5th. Do you think they will be able to get someone out by then to fix this thing? I was hoping on taking it with me to California.

If you call them today you will probably get it fixed before the end of this week.

Hi guys, an issue just popped up with my R2.
It's been working fine for the past 9 months but here's what happened.
Tried the ICENHANCER1.25 for GTA 4 and since then my laptop hasn't been the same. The system crashed and got a BSOD.
I usually use Riva Tuner to overclock my cards but it doesn't work anymore.
Well it does on one card but the other is unresponsive as shown in the attached jpeg.
So far I have tried reinstalling the 11.6 AMD drivers and restarted the computer several times, disconnected the AC adapter...
Don't know if I fried the GPU or if the VBIOS on the primary card is corrupted.
    What's your opinion?
    Thanks :)

I believe Simplified here got the point right.

the lower the tempetaures the better, even so 80/90 degrees are still acceptable. Vents clogged usually rise temperatures on both cards but since the overheating is happening only in one card, a bad paste job could be the issue. Have a look inside your AW for clogged heatsink fins, if they are clean, a repaste should fix it.

To give you an example my 5870's are v-bios flashed at 800/1100 and never get above 85 degrees (this is furmark, in game never over 81)
