Try one of those methods once:

For power adapter warning at boot:

Press F2 to enter the BIOS. The watts are listed at 193.

Unplug, then reconnect the A/C adapter. The watts will now be listed at 240.

    Exit and boot to Windows.

If battery shows plugged in but not charging in Windows:

    Turn off laptop.

Unplug the A/C adapter and remove the battery.

Hold power button for 30 seconds.

Reinsert the battery and plug in A/C adapter.

    Reboot the computer.

Press F2 to enter the BIOS. The watts are listed at 193.

Unplug, then reconnect the A/C adapter. The watts will now be listed at 240.

    Exit and boot to Windows.

Probably not. Power supplies typically are either all or nothing. That is, it will work at its specification, or not work at all.
This R2 BIOS is known to be a little flakey when reading the voltage. As Grim suggests, unplug it and plug it in again.

You can try updating your bios to version A08 and see if it fixes the issue.

Also when you do the unplugging scenario also unplug your AC adapter from the power point socket. Plug it back in and then try again.

    Cheers.

Did you get yours from the outlet? I did and mine came with the 210 - same errors, everything. I called Tech support and demanded a 240w that came today and everything is fine. The tech guy tried to convince me the 210w was what I needed and I told him every review I read here mentioned a 240w.

Yeh sounds like it came from the outlet or somewhere else. Since it shipped with bios A05. I'd also do the same as Nyceis, get a new 240w adapter from dell.

    Cheers.

As a bonus, the 240w is half the size of the 210w which makes travelling with this beast marginally easier :)

I also bought mine through the outlet, and despite it saying in the outlet that it comes with a 240W adapter, I received a 210W supply. Called AW support and they sent the correct adapter Next Business Day delivery.

The 210W brick is thicker and has ribbed plastic whereas the 240W brick is noticeably thinner and has a flat surface.

Oh, weird issue, how did that happen anyway, 210W or 240W... But I'm glad the problem was found so quickly now, nice job everyone!

I have the same issue. Got my m17x r2 from outlet. In Bios, it says 210W. The tech guy is making me update to bios A08. No luck though. I will ask him to send me another 240W PS. Damn, talk about quality control issues. 3 so far just in this thread :-(

Wow, and all from the outlet. I think we don't have something here in our country, just the normal EU store. But yeah, go call one or two people at dell and tell them it's a known issue, maybe report the serial from the A/C adapter to the guy, they have to recognize that it's not the correct one!

It's probably just what they have packed with the machines. Most of the outlet M17X R2's are also shipping with A05 Bios loaded.

When I called in for mine the tech said I wasn't the first to call it in.

    @turbo87
You may not want to stick with the A08 Bios.. there is a noticeable drop in CPU performance if you have an Extreme CPU in your machine.

In case anyone else has this issue, here's a pic of each unit:

    210W PSU

    240W PSU

It seems the Dell techs want you to reboot and flash the Bios and plug in and unplug the PSU while in the Bios screen that shows the rating, but you can tell just by looking at it. Just make sure they send you the right one :)

That almost looks like the XPS M1730 power brick.

Up at the top of the backside of the psu, the white label - starting with CN - what is that#? Each one is different from what I have seen, however it contains the Part# I believe.

Can you post the complete#? its a bit blurry in the pic.

    What Grimfan said ;)

    Easy Answer: No.

As long as you don't plan on upgrading to an Extreme CPU (920XM or 940XM) then you will notice no drop in performance. In fact you may want to use the A08 since it improves the touchpad. If you plan on upgrading to an Extreme chip in the future I'd stay with the A07.

I sent back my 210W PSU so I don't have that number, but my 240W PSU reads:

    CN-0J938H-73245-031-0940-A02
    DP/N 0J938H

I do believe these are also used on the M6400 and M6500.

Funny thing is, Batboy, I ordered the 210W power supply (three of them actually) because I didn't wan't to be weeks without a working computer again, and they sent me 240W bricks...

I just received my m17x today in the mail... same problem. Mine came with a 210W. I called Dell and they are sending me a 240W adapter. I do have a question though... will it hurt my comp if I run it with the 210W adapter for a few days before the new one arrives on Monday (3 days)?

Depends on the system - mine would not even recognize the 210 - had no choice but to wait for the 240.

I'm on it right now. The only problems I currently have is that the battery won't charge. It's still at 0%. I'm running a m17x with a 2 gig quad core proc with 8 gigs ram and 1 gig nvidia 260. I updated the bios to A05. I got it from Dell outlet.

If it works, then you can use it until your new battery gets there. There is no harm done and I'm sure it will provide enough to juice your current set up.

It won't hurt. I am in the same boat as you. I have the 240W coming on Monday and am running on the 210W. No problems for now except that annoying popup from OSD and the chrip at startup which I have disabled :)

I have just received my new m17x r2 and had the similar problem. One thing that concerns me is that since now that my alienware will not detect the adapter, will my alienware be constantly running on stealth mode?(hence the decrease in performance?) Will the new supply fix everything?

It won't run in stealth mode unless you initiate stealth mode. The worst that can happen is the battery won't charge when you plug it in, but it will still run ok. The new adapter will fix the charging issue.

but something is not right.. I tried running 3dmark2006 and it gave me an average of 26~fps. I am still waiting for the new power cord and adapter and I am assuming that during the entire time it is running on stealth mode

Same issue here. Mine has dual 4870s and I am SURE I am not in stealth (downloaded the stealth indicator from this forum), but my performance is crap and I don't hear the fans kick in at all when running 3dmark06 or vantage. I'm assuming it's because of the 210w PS. Also, mine doesn't charge the batteries at all, though I am able to run off of the power supply when plugged in. Dell has yet to get back to me on replacing the power supply, but I'm sure they will as many of you got yours next business day.

take the battery out until you get your new powerbrick. my windows score was a 3.2 on the proc until i got the new power brick. then it went to 7.0 after i got the right one. Dell handled it well and sent it out right away but its still something that needs to be addressed with the orders.
